DVD shopping in NYC?

Hi all,

Making the trip across the pond next week to NYC for our honeymoon

It's been 10 years since I last visited there, so would really like some advice on some good DVD/music/book stores etc. to visit - be they big chain stores or small independent ones. I know HMV is long gone, as is Kim's, but any recommendations would be much appreciated. My tastes are pretty wide-ranging (both in film and music), so anything from new releases to Criterions will be on my radar.

Will be staying fairly near Times Sq, but please recommend anything that you think is good no matter where in the city it is.

Thanks :)

Kim's isn't gone, it just moved to a smaller location a block away. They still carry much of what they used to before, so may be worth a look. J&R likely has the best deals on more mainstream movies. Other than those and some of the stores in Chinatown if you are into Asian flix, Best Buy is your best bet. There are also street vendors that do sometimes have great deals on legit DVDs and Blu-rays, but nothing is constantly there enough that I would recommend going out of your way for it.

J&R is probably the best place to go - it's easy to get to from Times Square area. With both Tower and Virgin gone, it's the only place in NYC that has an extensive selection.

DVD shopping in the city was much better just a few years ago. :(

I remember ENTERTAINMENT OUTLET being a good place to shop in NYC. It it still in business? It would be a pretty easy walk from the Times Square area to 40th and Fifth Ave.

Thanks a lot for all the above suggestions, guys - useful to know about Kim's having moved. So I take it it's now at 124 First Avenue? The old one was at St, Marks Pl, right?

Thanks again :)

Still in business and highly recommended. I go there every few days as I work in the area. Just picked up Steve McQueen's "Dead or Alive" boxset Season 2 for 5 dollars.

Since you are staying near Times Square, you can always check the local porno shops that sell regular movies (if you pass a porn shop that advertises regular films in the window, that's one way of figuring that out if you are embarrassed to check every single porno shop..haha) - they always release DVDs at least 2 weeks before official dvd release date.

ALL FOREIGN DVDs:
Kim's Video (it’s the best international DVD store in NYC...or even the world!)

JAPANESE DVDs:
Book Off

JAPANESE DVDs:
HQ Video (it’s the best Japanese DVD store in NYC - they make perfect quality Region-free bootlegs. If you know that there's a new Japanese DVD released with English subtitles, they can order it for you and make you a bootleg)
21 West 45th Street, 2nd Floor, NYC
(Between 5th & 6th Ave)
Phone: 212-221-0027

HONG KONG/CHINESE DVDs:
There are three stores on Bowery street near the corner of Canal Street in Chinatown

KOREAN DVDs:
Korya Bookstore (which has very big selection of Korean DVD) and two other Korean DVD stores
