Question for Amazon Prime users who share w/family

I have a question for Amazon prime users who share the account with family.

How does that work exactly?
Does it have to be family members in the same house?
Or can it be same last name in a different city?

How does Amazon enforce it, if at all?

Reason I ask is that I was considering splitting the $79 cost with my brother.

thx

It must be in the same household.

There is one way around it though. You can send anything you want as a gift to a different address. Your brother can list your address as his address and anytime he orders he can ship it there.

I don't think they restrict it... when people "illegally" share their accounts, do they give each other their addresses? I suppose they can do this at any time, though.

I share an account with my cousin. He is the main holder and he added me. We live at different address in the same town, and have different last names. In addition, he has added his brothers who live in other states, as well as some of his friends who also live in other states. He hasnt had any problem yet, and neither have I.

Same. I have my brother and sister on my account and we live in different households. All they ask for is their age, relation to you, and the email address associated with their Amazon.com account. I even put my second account on it so that both of my accounts can have Prime.

Yeah, my dad and I share my Prime account. Same city, but not the same address.

Not at the same time. He switches one person out, if one of his buddies needs to order something big. He kicked me off in early december because someone needed to order a tv, then added me back on so I could order christmas presents.

There is absolutely no restriction on this, and they don't check. As long as you know someone's name, birthday, and e-mail address, add away.

Uh... yes there are restrictions, and they are stated on Amazon's site, but of course you already know that. Now if they don't check, then I suppose you can do whatever you like and hope you don't get caught.

Or you can head down to Target and see how many Icee refills you can get before you get caught.

I'm sure there are restrictions, but I cant seem to find them. But if amazon doesnt check, are they really restrictions?

There was a thread over at slickdeals last September regarding a mass banning of accounts by Amazon. Amazon didn't tell the banned customers as to what criteria they used in making that decision. However, one of the theories was for abusing Prime. I have no idea if this is true or not, but definitely some food for thought.

That sounds like something that Amazon would do. Steal their yearly fees as well, I bet.

There were some extremely pissed off customers that got banned because they had kindle and a gift card balance.

I just tried again to find the wording on how many people one can have on a prime account, and i cant seem to find it. after navigating several layers deep in their policies I gave up. Anyone have a link to the wording on Amazon's site?

If you purchase a Prime membership, you may also invite up to four eligible family members living in your household (at the same address) to register for Prime membership at no extra cost.... The purchaser can change and/or remove guests at any time. A guest's membership will automatically terminate if the purchaser of the membership ceases to be a member or removes the guest....You may not transfer or assign your membership or these benefits, except as part of our family member guest program described above....changing your shipping address.... might affect Prime eligibility....We may in our discretion change these Terms, Amazon.com's general Conditions of Use and Privacy Notice, or any aspect of Prime membership, without notice to you.... if we .... decrease the number of family members who can be invited as guests, we will notify you by email at least 30 days before the new terms go into effect....We may terminate your membership at our discretion without notice. If we do so, we will give you a prorated refund based on the number of full months remaining in your membership. However, we will not give any refund for termination related to conduct that we determine, in our discretion, violates these Terms or any applicable law, involves fraud or misuse of this membership program, or is harmful to our interests or another user. Our failure to insist upon or enforce your strict compliance with these Terms will not constitute a waiver of any of our rights.
I think the above constitutes the relevant portion of the rules.

As stated, they may not always consistently enforce them to the letter but they can still ban you if/when they eventually get around to checking that you comply.

Banning people for clearly violating their policy? The nerve!

Of course, I don't know the exact reasons for all the bannings, but considering there is still rampant abuse of Prime, the ones banned must have particularly stood out.

And don't think of it as stealing - think of it as Amazon trying to recoup some of their loses caused by fraud.

The people who do this are basically stealing from Amazon.

Because Amazon never tries to steal from its customers. No they would never do that.

Did Amazon pick on you when you were a kid or something? And did you just try to justify stealing from someone because they stole from you?

 Do you have any examples where Amazon intentionally stole from their customers?

How do you get from what you quoted that I justify stealing?
