Wasting my lunch break at Best Buy...

The following exchange occurred after waiting over 15 minutes for a supervisor to check the price on cd because it rang up incorrectly.

Supervisor: Sir, this cd is $12.99 on our website.
Me: I'm not just making up a random price. Your website said that it was $7.99.
Supervisor: Maybe last week, but not this week.
Me: It was released today, so it couldn't have been last week. I just checked your website about 20 minutes ago to see if you had it in stock before driving here and it was shown as being $7.99.
Supervisor: No, it was $12.99, because that's our price for it. You must've been looking at another cd.
Me: I'm positive I wasn't. It was $7.99.
Supervisor: You can buy it for $12.99. If your computer still says it's $7.99, bring a print out in and we'll adjust the price.
Me: I think I'd rather just order it online and do in-store pick-up, but it's very annoying to have to drive here twice because of a mistake on your part.
Supervisor: The only reason you'll be driving here twice is because of your own mistake. And you'll be paying $12.99.
Me: Wait, don't you have more than one Best Buy website? Did you check the actual bestbuy.com that customers see when they get online?
Supervisor: Sir, the cd is $12.99 anywhere it would appear on our website.
Me: Are the floor models in your computer department connected to the internet?
Supervisor: Yes.
Me: Would you indulge me and walk over there while I check the price online?
Supervisor: No. Your mistake isn't going to waste any more of my time today.

I walk over to the computer department and bring up bestbuy.com. Sure enough, the cd is showing for $7.99 on their website. I walk back up to the customer service desk.

Me: I have another question.
Supervisor: Fine. What do you want now?
Me: How long does it take to fulfill an order placed for in-store pick-up?
Supervisor: Why are you bothering me with this?
Me: Because I'm trying to decide if I want to order that cd for $7.99 from a computer on display here or if I should drive back to my office and place the order from there. Or I suppose you could just price match it and save me the hassle.

The supervisor disappears for another 5-10 minutes and comes back.

Supervisor: You can have it for $7.99 if you're going to cause this much trouble.
Me: No, I can have it for $7.99 because that's what your website has it listed for and your store policy is to price match your website. If it was $12.99, I would've happily paid the $12.99. I just don't like being asked to pay $12.99 for a $7.99 cd.
Supervisor: It was $12.99 when I checked it.
Me: Yes, I'm sure it was. It was $7.99 forty-five minutes ago and it's $7.99 now, but your company briefly changed it to $12.99 while you were checking it the first time, just to make you look incompetent. You should probably quit. Have a good day.

I don't go to Best Buy looking for the most competent people in the world, but today was just ridiculous. What should've taken 2 minutes instead ate up over half of my lunch hour.

Usually long posts are horrible but this was great

homern3d 02-19-08 01:31 PM

This is why you should just buy online for in-store pickup...

Agreed!

amd555 02-19-08 01:39 PM

or the sup could have simply checked instead of simply reading the non-sale regular price of $12.99. Plus, his attitude was atrocious.

the Chief 02-19-08 01:40 PM

you are obviously in the wrong here. He is the supervisor of the store and he would know the prices for his items better than the common customer. You should have just paid the $12.99 for the new item that was obviously mispriced and not caused a scene.

/sarcasm

Kudos to you!

EDIT: dvd forum doent like html tags :p

Mankal 02-19-08 01:44 PM

You handled that very nicely.

islandclaws 02-19-08 02:07 PM

So did you buy the CD? Or just make him look like an asshat and then leave? Either way, kudos to you.

maxfisher 02-19-08 02:16 PM

I bought it. I actually get along with the employees at my Best Buy pretty well. They've got a music guy that's really knowledgeable and always makes sure the store gets new albums in, even if they're from smaller labels. The cashiers are also usually pretty good and a few recognize me because I'm in there almost every Tuesday for something or other. This particular supervisor was just a complete douche.

fashionvictim86 02-19-08 02:47 PM

Haha, I'm sorry but that was funny! Kudos to you!

His repeated use of "sir" at the beginning of so many of his sentences perfectly captures what a douchebag he is. Use of "sir" can be polite, but not when it's at the beginning of almost every sentence like that.

Speaking of pricematching, I went into a Circuit City today to purchase some headphones I saw online for $9.99. The store had them for $24.99, so I went to one of the display laptops, set the page to the headphones I wanted, and went to the checkout. Manager took a look, and fixed me up in seconds.

Deftones 02-19-08 07:33 PM

That's weird, because usually when I tell anyone about a lower price on their own website, they are quick to check and match it.

fujishig 02-19-08 07:38 PM

You could've saved 50 cents if you bought it then pricematched it... not much, but it would rub his mistake in his face a bit more... :)

Doc Moonlight 02-19-08 07:46 PM

Well-played, sir. Well-played!

mike7162 02-19-08 07:52 PM

I probably would have hit the guy at some point in that exchange. I can abide incompetence to a degree(I've come to expect it from BB), but those snarky comments are homocide-worthy.

They probably would have been nicer to you had you not returned over $15,000 worth of items during the previous year.

boc4ever 02-19-08 08:30 PM

You are a better person than I. Half way through that exchange I would have loudly let him know that I gave up my lunch to be aggravated for no reason.

come on now, he probably spends well over that amount to make him a worthwhile customer.

mhg83 02-19-08 09:54 PM

That guy sounds like a complete douche. I think we should nominate him for douche of the universe award this year.

ResIpsa 02-19-08 11:25 PM

I wanna know if you showed your receipt as you exited the store......

juanmgonzalez 02-20-08 10:54 AM

You should have leaned over and taken his pen - I hear Best Buy supervisors love that.

fitlissa76 02-20-08 02:41 PM

Bwahahahaha

I love this thread.

I was in a similar situation with Simpsons season six. I wanted the regular box, not the head, and I thought the regular box was on sale when I looked it up online, and I get to the store and just the stupid head sets for season six were on sale. The regular box was not. I questioned it, the employee promptly looked it up on their own website, and proved me wrong. At least in that situation I was wrong, but it didn't take 15 minutes of dicking around to get to the conclusion.

And I am not sure I would have had as much patience. Glad you stuck it out. The end of the story was much better that way.
