What to look for before buying Dvd's

Ok Guys I asked this question in the international thread for some of the asian movies. I want to know from where do you guys buy the boxed set (limited editions or collectors edition/special edition from). I was am confused how should I go about buying these dvd's.
Probably what i am confused is about what should I be looking for before 's buying dvd's. I have a Apex AD-703 dvd player and I believe it plays all regions.

I just don't want to buy dvd's and later find out that there are better version of it available. like collectors/special/limited edition etc in the market. I just want to buy the dvd'd and know that I don't have to but the same dvd again with a different version or edition to it. For eg. If I want to buy lord of the ring, I should be buying the dvd's which have all them in it like a boxed set with all extra stuff etc. or I f I am buying basic instinct, which should I buy limted edition, unrated or directors cut. all these editions make me confused.

If anyone could shed some light on these.
Like a rule of thumb for someone like me who is a newbee and wants to start dvd collection, that would be great.

I would really appreatiate your inputs.

Cheers!!!

Check out http://www.dvdbeaver.com/ for dvd comparisons, the only one I know of, and is really good. Also, www.dvdaficionado.com, to search for a movie and see all the various editions of a title, in all regions. As for where to get them? I'm only familiar with region 1 releases, for them, anywhere, between DeepDiscountDvd.com, DvdPlanet.com, Amazon, Buy.com, and DvdEmpire.com. Amazon and DvdEmpire have the best selection, DDD and DvdPlanet have the best prices (usually).

Just reading DVDTalks reviews helps a lot. I read these review sites too; http://www.dvdmaniacs.net/ http://www.mondo-digital.com/
