I think I exercised great restraint this time. I placed 3 orders totalling $73.50:

Legendary Jerry Lewis Collection (10 DVDs) - $21.35
War of the Worlds (1953) (SE) - $7.48
Three's Company Season 5 - $19.19
Star Trek: Nemesis (SE) - $10.84
Musketeer, The - $4.80
Ref, The - $5.04
Splitting Heirs - $4.80

I was very borderline about the last 3 DVDs, but as Doc Brown said "I figured what the h*ll".

What bums me a bit is that War of the Worlds (1953 SE) is $4.99 + tax at Target starting this week. Obviously I wouldn't have ordered from DDD if I had a crystal ball to see the upcoming week's ads. What's sad is I had bought it at Costco for $8.99 + tax until I saw the DDD deal for $7.43, so I have to return the Costco one and probably the DDD one.

I also received a previous DDD order (a $5.98 title before the 20% off sale) which was DOA. That is, I didn't even open the package and could hear it was not only a floater but the plastic hub was broken into several pieces.

What's the best way to deal with this? I generally don't order enough to get damaged DVDs that need returning, so I don't have experience with returns to DDD. Should I call DDD or email them to let them know what happened and send it back in its original unopened shipping package? Do I pay for return shipping, do I refuse receipt (and they'll cover shipping costs with USPS), or will they reimburse me for my return shipping costs for the damaged DVD?

I'm also tempted to return my War of the Worlds (1953 SE) because DDD will not price match Target's in-store price, and Target does not have it for $4.99 online. If I opened the shipping package of the damaged DVD and put it together with War of the Worlds when I receive it, that would save on shipping the second DVD, assuming DDD allows me to do that?

What struck me about the sale was just how cheap the box sets were. Buffy, Alien Quadrilogy, The Matrix, Back To The Future, Live 8, Batman Movie Anthology, Ulitimate Jerry Lewis Collection, were all going for incredible prices, prices you'd do well to find them for used in pawn shops or other stores that sell used media. I wound up buying four box sets. I had just bought the Alien Quadrilogy a few months ago in R2 Japanese for the DTS tracks, but if I hadn't I would have jumped on the DDD price. EVERY title I ordered was in stock, and some of them (like The Matrix set) are obvious big sellers.

This is also the best I've seen their site run during their 20 percent off sale, the improvement over how it was every sale prior to this one is night and day- before this sale I wasn't impressed with their sales because of slow page loading and their site being unable to handle the heavy traffic. This time the pages loaded as if it were any other day no matter what time I was browsing their titles.

Finally got shipping notification yesterday on the order I placed Tuesday. I also got a shipping notification on the backordered Wizard of Oz 3-disc set from my first order, which had an 11/21 expected ship date.

Now, my only order yet to ship is the one I placed last night just before the sale ended.

My mail carrier's going to hate me since all of these packages are going to be held at the post office for a couple weeks, since I'm leaving on vacation Wednesday. Whoever delivers my mail the day I stopped the mail holding will have a lot to carry.

Mail customer service and they will send you a pre-paid return label that you can print.
I had a bad disk in a box set and returned a complete box set - turnround was fairly quick.

When I got started ordering, I quickly realized that I had better take advantage of my credit union's "skip-a-payment" option on my auto loan. The way I figure it, if my credit union charges me 3.99%, and I can save 20% from DDDVD, then I'm getting a net savings of 16.01% by ordering more DVDs. Is this what they refer to as "fuzzy math"? Anyone else in their point and click frenzy mess up by ordering a DVD already in their collection? I did so with "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind". Oh well, I'll think about returning it or putting it on Half.com.

Shipping isn't the bottleneck. It's waiting for the warehouse to pull & package everything. I went with regular shipping on my first order because I knew it'd get in before the warehouse got backed up. The 4 orders after that I went with 3-5 day shipping because with the holiday coming up the warehouse probably won't get to them until next week, and I want to make sure to get my stuff before Christmas.

The Jerry set shot up by about $20 shortly after the sale started, but that first price was absolutely incredible.

While I love their prices, there are two titles that I wanted really badly to pick up but DDD didn't even carry them

1) The first was Showtime's classic 80's series Faerie Tale Theatre-hosted by Shelley Duvall. This was a great show, and one I definetly want to pick up:

2) Second Chances- This was an early Jennifer Lopez(GOD INCARNATE) TV series that I wanted to check out, as I heard it was very good. It was before Selena.

Bother are available at Amazon:

Faerie Tale Theatre-http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?itemID=WBD058594

It's only a couple bucks difference, and probably not worth the hassle of returning to DDD (it costs them money to restock it and do the necessary paperwork, when the disc is in perfectly good condition and doesn't need to be returned).

I'm sorry, but I have read many of your posts about how you didn't get the best deal possible, and you're mad, and whatnot.. We don't always get the best price on everything. Some of us get in on deals, and some don't. That's the way life plays out. If you want the absolute best price on dvds all the time, maybe you should wait until the next format (or the one after that), and you can probably find DVDs for $0.25 at yard sales and thrift shops.

And now, for the updated stats for the madness that is the DDD sale.. This is through Post #67.

Total Orders: 903
Total Cost: $145178.48
Total Discs: 7904

Average Cost per Order: $160.77
Average Cost per Disc: $18.37
Average Discs per Order: 8

I only made two orders, and kept my total under $100 this time around. I hadn't been saving up for this one, so I just got a few things I had been wanting. However, next time around (June?), I plan on dropping $500-700 and picking up all the Criterions from Jan-Jun, and a few other older ones if I have money leftover.

I got my first order delivered on Friday night. Everything was fine, except that the copy of Arrested Development: Season 2 I ordered did not have the orange slip case it comes in AND had two disc ones instead of disc two.

I have to call DDD up on Monday and either get a refund or a corrected copy sent out.

Whoa, AD season two comes in a orange slilpcase? I didn't receive one either...Now there is even more reason to send it back and go through the Amazon deal, assuming it's still alive.

Order 2 (already posted in previous thread)

WERNER HERZOG COLLECTION (6D) SHIPPED 1 $33.59

Order 3 (already posted in previous thread)

CHUNGKING EXPRESS SHIPPED 1 $5.04
PARIS, TEXAS SHIPPED 1 $5.74
THE UNDERNEATH BACKORDER 1 $4.80
HOME MOVIES-3RD SEASON BACKORDER 1 $16.74
CHRISTMAS IN AUGUST (SE) SHIPPED 1 $7.88

Chungking Express is for my girlfriend (not a gift though). Christmas in August is the only title I picked up based on a recommendation in the DVDTalk threads. Usually I find more titles by reading these threads (Time & Tide, Ultraviolet, etc.).

Order 4

NEW ORDER-ITEM [2DISC) BACKORDER 1 $13.30
FLAMING LIPS-VOID 1 $7.98
DIRECTORS LABEL SERIES BOX SET PREORDER 1 $32.39

(Already sent an email to CS requesting a discount on the Director's Label set, although I couldn't tell from following the thread whether others were successful in receiving it or not. Either way, I already sold my copies of the three individual discs for $30, so at worst it's a $2.39 upgrade for the box and bonus disc.)

Order 5 (didn't actually order these myself, but made a trade on another site as part of which the guy ordered these for me)

BATTLE OF ALGIERS (CRITERION) $28.68
COLLECTED SHORTS OF JAN SVANKMAJER $16.77
AVANT-GARDE-EXPERIMENTAL CINEMA OF $16.77
THE KRZYSZTOF KIESLOWSKI SET $55.97
KNIFE IN THE WATER (CRITERION) $23.00
DIVORCE ITALIAN STYLE (CRITERION) $23.00

My stats for the five orders (not including Chungking Express) look like this:

Total orders: 5
Total spent: $316.32 (out-of-pocket $152.13)
Total number of titles: 16
Average spent per title: $19.77 (out-of-pocket $9.51)
Total number of discs: 41
Average spent per disc: $7.72 (out-of-pocket $3.71)
