Yesterday, I discovered that it must truly be over for Blockbuster.

I still had a coupon for $1 off any non-food purchase from the no-late-fee settlement. It says it expires on November 28th, but I went to use it Tuesday and they wouldn't take it.

If you're going back on your settlement to save a dollar, you're probably not long for this world.

Blockbuster owns the distribution house for My Date With Drew, so they can obviously swing those copies.

The sparse copy depth for Batman Begins and Revenge of the Sith is pathetic. BBV is relying on those titles to pull them out of the dog house in Q4, but if nobody can find those copies when they go to the store, they are NOT going to be spending money on My Date With Drew instead.

Did they tell you why they didn't take it?

Actually, I didn't even notice they hadn't taken it until after I left.

I handed the guy the movies, my membership card and the coupon at once. He scanned the card, the coupon and then the movies. I paid with a gift card I had, and I didn't really think about how the price should've been a dollar lower. I just happened to look at my receipt later on and noticed there was no dollar taken off.

I assume the kid just did it incorrectly. He stamped the coupon and kept it, though. He never said anything about it not being accepted.

It might have been an honest mistake then. I don't know about your coupon, but I do know that those receipts/coupons rub off pretty easilly, so if they can't scan the bar code, and they can't read the number code, it won't come off correctly either, and they might have missed that fact.

I'm sure it was a mistake, but I wanted to throw it on the fire as more doom and gloom.

It hacks me off, though, that they stole a dollar from me, even if it was an honest mistake.

But given that I've spent all of 34 cents in actual money in Blockbuster in over a year (between the trade value and a gift card I got for my birthday, I've had a lot of Blockbuster "credit"), I'm probably still ahead of the game, especially since I did understand the no-late-fee thing from the get-go and didn't think the settlement necessary.

Gather 'round kiddies! It's time for an early installment of ABOB TEFF'S RANDOM PAGE 3 THOUGHTS! (it's been a while!)

UNIVERSAL TITLES and MADE UP LIES: Yes, Universal and Lackluster are locked into a pissing battle. Each time that a Universal title doesn't show up (or the buys are light such as Unleashed) we are told "This is the last one." Universal does not participate in revenue sharing and are taking a hard line with Block's credit issues. As for the "made up lies" don't fault the girl at the counter. Like most major corporations, Block does not give it's frontline people the tools that they need (i.e., INFORMATION). This is probably what the poor girl was told. Online has been carrying the missing UNiversal titles because the Online portion of the business does not deal directly with the studios (I'm not sure why on this one).

LAND OF THE DEAD: It did suck. It was basically Resident Evil 2 with more gore.

THE DEVIL AND MRS. AMIDALA: There are actually a couple of less nefarious reasons for the light showing on Star Wars. First, it is a high purchase priority title. Meaning, like a Dsiney release, a good percentage of people are going to flat out buy it, so why stock an morbidly robust copy depth? Next, FOX actually limited retailers purchases across the board (not just another Block cash flow issue). After Dreamworks and Pixar took Wall Street beatings with retailer returns on Shrek 2 and Incredibles, FOX is trying to limit the exposure on this title.

ROGERS VS. THE BLUE: From what I understand, Blocks outside the US seem to be fine upstanding places to visit, since they are run seperately (FREE PLUG: Try visiting Chrisedge's website).

RANDOM THOUGHT: Charles Barkley.

TIP OF THE DAY: Bet on red.

You are correct, sir, about that. I noticed that at the BBV I go to that they have preprinted responses to give to the customer when asking about certain titles taped to the counter. I guess it's either from their MAP or email. Such as Carlito's Way new DVD not coming to BBV because they decided since it was airing on TV, they were not going to get it for rental. The misinformation you hear at the registers is what they are TOLD to say. Unless they are reading insider trades, or visiting business sites, they are not going to know. Most of them are on a sinking ship and have no idea.

From imdb:

Blockbuster May Be on the Verge of Bankruptcy

Blockbuster released its most dismal quarterly report ever on Tuesday, so dismal that it even included a warning that it may be forced to seek bankruptcy protection. The company reported a loss of $491 million during the quarter, most of it due to a write-down related to its spin-off from former parent Viacom. In-store business, it said, continued to be down due to the elimination of late fees, and online business remained flat as the company was unable to attract more than a fraction of Netflix's subscriber base. The company said that it plans to reduce marketing costs and sell or shutter its smaller rental chains, Movie Trading, Video King and Mr. Movies.

When a company issues a warning that it may seek bankruptcy protection, that's usually an indication that it's on its way already.

Before the end of the year .....

They need to start renting porn.

My BBV is as worthless as tits on a boar. It's like you walk over the new releases, and there's nothing there but 200 copies of a six month-old Romantic Comedy, and 100 copies of a direct-to-video action movie. It's like something out of the Eastern Bloc or Soviet Union.

And it's been this way for years, not just before they started going down the financial shitter.
