Circuit City selling DVD Warranties?

I went to Circuit City today to pick up a copy of "Christmas Vacation." It was marked $14.99. When I went to pay, it rang up at $12.99. I thought "Great"! The clerk then asked me if I wanted to buy a $2.00 DVD warranty. HUH! Is that policy or was he screwing with me?

He was screwing with you. We all know DVD's will last forever.

nice of them to think of ways to make new cash considering that they will be out of business or will be bought out in a few years.

I have over 1000 DVD's and have never had one fail on me. If it doesn't play when I get home tonight, I'll just take it back and exchange it. I don't get it... whatever.

I think it'll happen, it's inevitable.

Well, I think its bad. And it has been bad for quite a while but I just see them falling down and down and just hanging around there. Kinda like sears or something (sears is/was not doing so great right?). Sure maybe they will go under, but I dont see it happening in the next 15 years at least.

Around 10 years ago Circuit City was bigger than Best Buy. Now Best Buy considers Dell, Wal Mart and Amazon their competition. Circuit City is getting squeezed out of the market little by little. A few years ago they stopped selling appliances. They need to find a niche, get bought out or think of something fast or get squeezed into bankruptcy.

In Niles, Ohio a year or so ago Best Buy opened a new store in a plaza a mile or so from an established Circuit City. CC recently closed that store and opened a larger, brand new one in another plaza closer to BB. BB responded with an advertising sign at the entrance to the plaza where the new CC is located.

BB still considers CC competition else they would not have gone to this effort.

BB is so much bigger than CC it's not even worth talking about

BBY had over $24 billion in revenues last year
CC has just under $10 billion

I will make a nice broad prediction. In 5-10 years Circuit City and CompUSA will be nothing but memories

yeah somebody missed the paradigm shift at CC
ever since that divx mess, they should of gotten smarter by offering a bigger selection of DVDs but NOOOOO two years ago, every time I went there on Tuesday night they were already sold out of their tiny stock, so I never went there again.

Back when Toys R Us had the Buy 2, Get 1 Free videogame sale, the clerk there damn near insisted that I had to buy a warranty. I told him they were gifts, so I could care less what happened to 'em.

I work at EB Games and we're now pressured to sell warranties on games. If you haven't managed to get 1 for every $150 of merchandise you sell, it could mean trouble... I hate it... Especially when a specific coworker shows me up and gets 15-20 in a day when I'm lucky to get 5!

Yeah, most CC stores are worthless. The ones around here have terrible DVD and CD selections, they're un organized (stuff never stays in alphabetical/genre order), the staff is terrible (much worse than BB, and BB isn't great by any means) and they don't get enough of a lot of new releases and often don't get them out until late afternoon on Tuesdays.

I really can't see them sticking around much longer unless they have a drastic change in quality of selection and service, or come up with some other great idea.

Does the warranty covers scratches and other accidental damage which renders the discs unplayable? If not, the warranty is a joke and a scam.
