Fine, it might not be possible for YOU, but it is possible for many of us. If it's possible for many of US, it's possible for someone who could possibly be a crook.

So just calm down, take a deep breath, and understand that just because you can't do it for some reason, does not mean that other people can.

Because I can, period, end of story.

A simple "I was wrong" would have sufficed.

You're wrong, man. Wrong as wrong can be.

There's always one guy who wants to argue against the majority purely to add antagonism to the mix. And just because you THINK you are right, doesn't change the fact that you are, indeed, wrong.

I just opened up DDD and got the account of Albert J Darago.

Albert -- if you're reading this -- I apologize for screwing with your details, but I've just changed your billing option to 'Bill Me Later' and your new shipping address is:

Bob Bobertson
2001 Space Odyssey Street
LaLaLand, MD 210437920

Never asked for a CC number once.

If I still have access to the account, I'll change the shipping info back.

But you're wrong, kayak.

And at least as late as last night (and the previous 24 hours), so could I and many others. That's why this blew up so big. It's also when people started switching the billing options of other accounts to help protect them.

Edit:

Make that "And at least as late as tonight..."

kayak99, if your just trolling: OK you got me. But for others reading this it is real and should concern you.

I'm perplexed by the ability to change account settings WITHOUT being required to fully re-type the CC number (per what has always been DDD's policy).

Brent -- Are you able to actually change SOMEBODY ELSE'S data without having to change the CC number fully? Or just your own account data?

For mine (as of right now) I can change settings to MY acct. without re-typing the CC #. Don't know about Lateesha's or Samuel's or Yoda's accounts -- because I haven't had another person's suddenly appear on screen (as yet).

But I AM being forced to re-type the password over & over again in Acct. Settings, which has never been required heretofore.

I'm wondering why this is afflicting some, and not others.

Not once have I logged on and been able to access any account other than my own. It's odd...

There's been a few theories about browser types, cookies, "remember me," accounts recently logged in, etc. No one seems to be sure that I have read. It would be nice if DDD themselves would comment. Their silence is troubling.

Isn't there a fellow with the username "DeepDiscountDVD" that visits DVD Talk? I know I've seen his posts someplace in the past.

I doubt we'll hear anything from DDD anytime soon...if ever.

Anybody else having the Password trouble I've discussed? Keeps changing back to something weird that I've never authorized previously.

Has anyone managed to get them on the phone since the site was last taken down, to ask them why it's back up when the problem isn't sorted?

I'd really like to know why the hell someone hasn't just taken their server offline until it's full sorted.

If it's a 'loss of sales' issue -- they're losing thousands of customers right now by continuing to leave their personal information exposed.

What are you doing that causes you to see it? I can say I changed my password to a very random one because of the fact that my email could be changed and the "email me my password" would have compromised my normal DDD password. But that was late Friday night.

This is horrible.

I'm a Matthew.

What is the last name, ship to address, etc? I just changed my information over to Bill Me Later, just to be on the safe side, but perhaps that caused a problem?

People called in Saturday am, they said they were aware of problems and were working on them, they went down for an hour or two, and came back up early Saturday afternoon with all the same issues as near as I could tell. That's about it. I have been emailing symptoms and screen caps of what I can do and have gotten no reply.

I got my own acct, and was able to choose bill me later. Hopefully I'm OK.

Thanks!

I went in after first reading about this Friday night and changed my option as well, and minutes later notified about my account being on someone else's screen.

That's when I and others started changing other accounts and sending emails that I could also see. It's what I would have hoped someone else would do for me.

In fact, in the only positive note on this fiasco I got to know some new people from around the world because I could not change international accounts to "bill me later." I made quite a few friends the last two days from outside the US.

The only explanations I can think of for the site still being up are that they're either:
  • incredibly greedy,
  • incredibly irresponsible, or
  • not in control of the site.
The first two explanations would be extremely disappointing. Any of them could lead to the end of the site as we know it. So we may never find out the whole story.

What are you doing that causes you to see it? (password)
I think you were talking to me, Bill.
Anyway...When I go to "Account Info", I can see that BOTH "Password" boxes contain the wrong password (because of the number of "asterisks" I see -- can't actually SEE the "word" itself, of course, just the asterisks).

I've changed it 6 times to the correct word....but it changes back to a different word every time. Most curious.

You guys might want to verify your number of "asterisks" in both Password boxes, too. I'll bet some are wrong...like my situation.

Oh well......
The number of asterisks shown on the screen does not represent the number of characters in the password. It always shows the same number of asterisks regardless of the number of characters.

At least it used to. Who knows what code is being run right now. And who's running it.

Yes I was, sorry.

Do you see 6 asterisks as well?

Looks like it defaults to six for the account status view. Mine is several more characters and shows ******
