Working at videogame stores

I plan on getting a summer job at Gamestop. Anybody have any experiences working there? Do they usually pay minimum?

Gizmo 05-19-04 06:30 PM

GameStop is Minimum. You must sell a certain amount of there card and pre-orderes a week or you will be fired. If you don't feel you should have to sell a certain amount and its 'not fair' you should not apply.

POWERBOMB 05-19-04 08:26 PM

Wow. Never knew that about GS. Sounds rough.

Lethal Nemesis 05-19-04 09:09 PM

Damn, I didn't know that. Thanks!

Tarantino 05-20-04 08:59 AM

That's not true, I used to work there and nothing like that ever happened. I loved working there part time when I had no bills. It was a fun job.

How can they pay minimum wage and then overcharge on everything by at least $5-$10?? You go buy a PS2 game and it's $60. Why anyone would buy from a mall videogame store is beyond me.

I guess it depends on the specific store, huh? I'll make sure to ask the GameStop I want to apply to and see what their deal is. Thanks for your responses, everyone.

Mopower: I haven't been to GameStop in months, but in the time I've been there, they usually had "normal" prices ($49.99 plus tax for a new PS2 game, for example).

Even though they pay minimum wage, I bet you get to take the games home and play them.
When I buy games from these stores, I always insist on unopened ones.

You mean like a free rental? I just wanna earn some extra cash, get me a Gamecube, and buy some games for all 3 systems. I bet the employee discount isn't much, eh?

Tarantino 05-20-04 05:20 PM

The discount is like 15-20%, but I last worked at one like 5 years ago. You get to take any game home and 'check it out' for a week, that was the best part.

POWERBOMB 05-20-04 10:37 PM

Tarantino, you are a retail working foole, aren't you?

Tarantino 05-21-04 01:14 AM

Lets see...

Lucky's Supermarket (Courtesy Clerk)
Babbages/Gamestop (Salesman)
Albertson's Supermarket (General Merchandise)
Best Buy (Merchandising Supervisor)

Yep. All retail.

The rent for retail space in malls is high, which is why all mall stores prices aren't competitive with bigger retailers.

But I agree, I don't see why people shop at these stores when you can find new games cheaper at other stores, and used games cheaper at rental places and Ebay.

Yeah a free rental. I just don't like how they resell the games as new after they've been played. It wouldn't surprise me if the workers were pirating the games as well.

Well, I've been reading the EB/GameStop rant in the videogames forum. I think I'll apply to Target or Circuit City instead. :)
