FWIW: Fry's opening store in West burbs of Chicago

Just thought I'd throw this up here for the Chicago area people. I drove by the new store(not open yet). It's located in Downers Grove on Findlay just south of Butterfield.

Wonder what the theme of the store is gonna be?

For example, in Houston (IIRC) it's a Cowboy theme, Austin has a music theme and the home office store in San Jose is Aztec or Incaan.

It's in Downer's Grove, so it will probably be a yuppie theme.

This store is freakin' HUGE! Are they all like this?

Anyone know when it's set to open?

So do you already have a handy nickname for Fry's too?

Fry's is a great store..very large stores with a great assortment. It seems they are doing some rapid expansion also. Houston is getting a second store, this one due south down I45 in the Webster/ClearLake area.

We've had IKEA for 15yrs in D.C., but still no Fry's.

Makes for a good reason to fly to L.A. once in awhile.

They are getting huge amount of shipments thru UPS recently, so they are still stocking up the store. I know because I have been handling the boxes at UPS.

I hope that when they open we get some great deals.

To bad that the store is about 20 miles away, or I would go there. Best Buy, Circuit City and Wal-Mart is only 5 miles away, so when they open I will price match at a closer store.

Hopefully they will open more stores in the Chicagoland area.

They tend to run some pretty good sales every now and then. If the building is new it will look damn good. If there are remodeling an existing building it will look worse than a Home Depot.

Brand new building. I drove by there this weekend and noticed a lot of cars in the parking lot. I'm assuming it new employee training. I hope they open soon I anxious to check it out.

Just came back. Some good Grand Opening 1-Day sales.

Got all three James Bond box sets for $49.99 each. Western Digital 120GB hard drive for $29 after rebate. Mid-tower case with 350W power supply and a set of walkie-talkies - each free after rebate.

Place was packed!! Not just with people either. Aisles crammed with boxes of TV's and other miscellaney. I was impressed with the size of the store and the amount of items they have (noted the mouse aisle had about 10 billion mice of all kinds) Was surprised to see they even sell pron there. Was not impressed with the store decor. Looked like someone's 1970 paneled basement was transported there. One notable item was the high end A/V room and attached mini theater with an unbelievable sound system(scared the crap out of the kiddies) Overall impression was good, did not make a purchase but will go back after the initial crowds go away.

Haven't checked for pron at Fry's. Someone once told me that the pron they sold was cleaned up and only softcore. As for the decor, I talked to a lady who works at Fry's and she told me the company trys to have some sort of theme at each location. In my area the Fry's looks like a warehouse with pallets of merchandise everywhere. The other Fry's looks like something from the past, with old B & W pictures and lots of Elvis Presley music playing almost everywhere.

I was there July 5. I had to make a return (found a better deal at Circuit City). Anyway, the woman at the front door (not sure what her name was, but she looked Middle Eastern or Hispanic, kind of heavy set) was really rude. When I expressed concern about losing my place in the return line, she said "I don't know why you're so angry!" Later (try half an hour later) as I was standing in another line, she walked by me and muttered, "See, I told you you didn't have to stand in line." Overall she acted like a condescending bitch. On top of all of that, I didn't get my money refunded, the gave me some cheap "gift certificate" printed on their laser printer. I wasn't all that impressed with the store. You can get better prices elsewhere and you don't have to deal with their crappy employees.
