Target will do a price adjustment if it goes on sale within the return window as noted above. Do it all the time if the item goes on sale for a better price.

BB stinks. I got hassled two weeks ago for X2 when it went on sale again for $14.99 (bought for $19.99 via McD's tabs). I had to get past the CSR, his manager and the store manager to finally get the GM to ok it. Luckily, the GM was there and ok'ed it. Huge hassle and I wouldn't gotten it if the GM didn't happen to be at that store that day. I'm not buying anything else at BB anymore.

If I'm going to pricematch, CC is the best. I've PM'ed tons of stuff there (Nemo for 12.xx, Escape from NY for 9.xx, Lion King deal, $14.99 plus any title for $5, etc.) with no hassle. They only called once for the PM for Nemo with WM on release day. Even though they were swamped with people buying Nemo, they made the time to call quickly and ok the PM.

I had problems pricematching at CC a few weeks ago when Kmart had Wallstreet for $5. CC cashier initially ok'd deal, but computer required a manager to authorize overide for some reason. The cashier contacted her manager who then asked her to call Kmart to check availability. Local Kmart didnt have movie in stock. I spoke to the manager and inform him that I could have easily went to Kmart first to ensure getting the movie, but came to CC instead, primarily because of their pricematching policy, and informed the manager, even if Kmart were out of stock, I could get a raincheck at Kmart for the item. Manager persisted that since they were out of stock, they could not honor pricematch. I would have probably walked away, but the managers attitude seemed like "tough luck buddy" and he appeared happy to be rejecting the pricematch. At that point, I decided to force managers hand and asked him to contact other local Kmarts in area. He has a cashier start making phone calls to other Kmarts, and during the wait, the lines start to back up and customers start getting impatient. After 10 minutes, paydirt, cashier finds a Kmart that has one. To make it sweeter, the manager has to come over to approve the overide. Overall, though, we all wasted time, and it looks as if stores are looking for ways to get out of pricematching.

BB are terrible at service, I had the same thing happen during Thanksgiving when I wanted to buy Chicago... and then there has been other sad circumstances where they have lost orders and not refunded me until I have made 7 phone calls. Oh well, I think this is going to spread and they are going to loose some business due to this. At least from me...

Jtnguyen12 01-18-04 12:21 AM

I am totally AGREE

Bestbuy is very Horrible Horrible STORE

BB policy: We beat the lowest Price & plus 10% off different = My butt. They never ever Pricematch anything whenever I ask them too even the items is IN STOCK ** Sorry they price so LOW we can't match** (after 10 - 25 mins waiting)

The Bads: the Manager & SUpervisor is so LAZY & They look very stupid & clueless. Also, they customer service is Very Very SLOW.

BB do wanted customer $$$ but they don't wanted them return or Exchange.

I Only shop whenever I got Gift Card or some items is PRETTY CHEAP!

PresidentGringo 01-18-04 12:27 AM

seems people get upset when they can't get one over a company.

If i was a company like BB, i would not price match. if people find it cheaper else where, then why price match, why not just buy it from the place that advertises it cheaper? Sure, a company can check the prices against competitors and try and under cut them, but if a company goes and offers a product super-cheap, then they should be rewarded with your business.

SoonerDoc 01-18-04 12:34 AM

sorry smirnoff,

you are wrong in this case.....

their policy explicitly states "of an available product"....CC is sold out...it is not available...

there is a very simple reason why places that price match require the product to be in stock...CC (or someone else) could offer an expensive product at a ridiculously low price (like 90% off) and if they only stock 2 or 3 of this item, best buy is stuck pricematching their whole inventory of this product at the low price while CC ( or whomever) only loses out on 2 or 3 of this product...

why should best buy sell their 50 copies of jaws at 7.99 if CC only had 3 copies to begin with?

cubanx 01-18-04 01:29 AM

I'm sorry but they simply don't pay enough for all that drama. (I worked at BB long ago)

I would just stare in amazement at CSR's getting into a 10 minute argument over less then $5. What damn sense does that even make? Your day is ruined, the customer's day is ruined, and your check is still the same at the end of the week.

My experience on buying DVDs at BB

Pardon me if my comments about BB is a little "off topic".

What can I say about BB?

My shopping experience at BB is like living with a woman, can't live with her, can't live without her.

I enjoy the saving at BB on DVDs. Almost every week I can find some good deals on DVDs. On holidays I can also find some good deals on computer accessories and electronics. So if I check out at the regular counter, then everything is OK, which is good side of BB, at least as normal as other stores.

However, in order to make deals better, like price matching, using additional coupons, reward zone certificates, you have to go through very unpleasant customer service with the some unfriendly store employees. I understand they must follow the rules and they are doing what they are trained and I don't blame them for it. What I can't stand is that every time when I wanna make a deal, they would give me a hard time like I was doing something illegal. It seems that they have not only been trained for following the coporate rules, but also trained for make us dealcatchers feel bad. I feel lucky because I've got three BB stores in my deal hunting parameter. Unfortunately, none of these stores can make my shopping experience more pleasant. It looks like you can only been treated as GOD if you buy the products at their "regular" price. If you want to get a good deal from them, they will definately want to make you feel owing them a thousand dollar after you get what you want. Usually if you want to save a few dollars, like doing price matching or using a "rare coupon(coupon not recongnized by their computers)" or their computer doesn't function correctly to take off the discount, you have to spend at least 20 min at customer service. Everytime if I was in such situaction, I tried to be as polite as possible, but I have to be prepared I could have another "nightmare".

Too bad there's no CC near my place. I must say I have to live with BB because they have the best DVD selection in town. Wal-Mart, K-Mart and Target are good shopping places but their DVD selections are too limited. Borders is too expensive. CH is too slow and more trouble. If I want to collect more DVDs faster and with less money, BB is still my first place to go. However, if they don't improve their customer service (I don't mean changing the policies), I will eventually "divorce her" if I'm getting richer.

Any comments from y'all is welcome.

P.S. No store likes price matching. Do you guys think BB will provide this service if no other store has it?

Price matching = saving a couple of dollars + wasting time + bad feelings + gasoline = $0 (actually worse than nothing).

The only reason I do PM at BB is I can spend my rewardzone certificates (like gift cards), otherwise I will go directly to other stores.

You think that's bad business,
I recently bought Freddy Vs. Jason at Walmart. The first Walmart had it for 19.99, while their online price was 14.99. I asked a manager if they price matched their online store and they said absolutely not.
I had heard that other Walmarts were selling it for the 14.99 price. So I took a chance at another store in the area and bingo... they had it on sale for 14.99. I felt like going back to the other place and shoving it under the manager's nose. Come to think of it I should have, maybee I could have gotten them to mark down all their Freddy Vs Jason prices to make them lose money and piss off the manager hehehehe!!!

This would not have pissed off the manager, but would have made you look like a fool. Wal-Mart prices vary by store depending on the competition in the area. Most, if not all, stores do not price-match their online stores since they are two separate entities.

This is why I do most of my dvd buying online where I do not have to worry about these issues and can get things much cheaper anyway.

cornflakeguy 01-18-04 02:25 AM

I got thrown out of the Best Buy on Marsh and LBJ in Dallas, TX the day Attack of the Clones came out. They wouldn't price match the Toys R Us ad. Many of you did that, you remember.

The checkout girl said, "Sure, we'll pricematch TRU, we've been DOING IT ALL DAY." But alas, she actually forgot to do it. So it rang up wrong and it was too late to change it.

"Just take it over to customer service and they will credit you back the difference, " she said. "Ok," I said.

When I got there they saw the ad IN MY HAND and rudely exclaimed, "We aren't matching Star Wars anymore, they are sold out!", and looked back down to the counter to what they were doing.

I said, "What? Were you talking to me?"

He goes, "Yeah, TRU is sold out, we only price match whats in stock."

I said, "Thats cool, but your CHECKOUT girl was going to do it, but she messed up, and sent me over here to fix it. She approved it."

Counter guy goes, "That doesn't matter, she isn't customer service." I said , "Neither are you with that sorry-ass attitude, chief. How about you go over there and ask her what she did, she'll explain it to you."

"It doesn't matter what she said. I don't care. They are sold out, we don't match it, end of story!" So I asked him to call them again, with me there, on speaker phone, and see if they have any, maybe they got more in stock. "No way", he says, and started to shuffle off.

So then, admittedly, I lost my cool.

I said, loud enough that the front of the store heard me fine, "Listen up MF'er, give me the credit for the movie and I'll leave. Don't and I will stay!"

Before 'give me the credit' was out of my mouth I was surrounded by big guys in yellow Best Buy shirts asking me to leave. I didn't take the hint and went on a middle-finger flipping and F bomb dropping escapade bad enough to make my girlfriend break up with me had she been there. (and who has never heard this story, either)

About 30 seconds into that I starting getting threats of "the police are on the way, don't threaten the customers like that (which I don't even know what that means) and such.

I said, "Fine, I want a refund on this DVD, I don't want your best buy crap anymore."

They refused. They refused to give me a refund for a 10 minute purchase. They told to leave now or face the consequences.

So I left.

And went into another Best Buy, had the damn thing pricematched, AND got the free calendar. Then I walked in with my full price receipt and DVD from the first store and got a full refund on that. All in 3 mins. No questions asked.

That was the last time I stepped foot in a Best Buy.

I really like circuit city... I went there Without the best buy ad to price match. The opened a binder with ALL the ads from local stores, saw that it was adverties in the BB ad and gave it to me for that price no questions asked and no calling them :)

Ahh.. Well, I wonder if they would have matched their other store 5 miles up the road?
Anyway, I'm not letting it get to me, I got it for the lower price, and now with your info I'm a better informed "consumer"
Thanks!

cornflakeguy,

My sympathy for your bad experience. To all of your deal catchers, please try not to PM at BB unless it is the only way to get the deal because 9 out 10 you will be "****ed". BB thinks they are a store superior to others so they have some kind of privilege to treat us bad.

Price matching @ BB = saving a couple of dollars + wasting time + bad feelings + gasoline = $0 (actually worse than nothing).

speedyray 01-18-04 07:51 AM

Everyone can sit here and squabble over the BB policy, but they have always enforced it in my area. I don't even bother with price matching there. Circuit City on the other hand will price match any ad. Our Circuit City is just one of the smaller stores that has a limited variety of DVD and CD. Heck sometimes, for big sales they pricematch before you ask. When Vice City came out and BB had it for 40, CC matched everyone in the line, even those that went wow, I thought it was 50.

JestersTear 01-18-04 08:36 AM

I'm screwed no matter what store I go to, it seems.

Back when Attack of the Clones came out, I and many other friends went through the "Toys R Us is sold out" speech. In several cases, this was said after the person making the request had just come from TRU (I find it hard to believe that a few hundred DVD's were sold out in 5 minutes).

Then, following an arse-raping from Best Buy and their service plan (I had to pay a $25 ransom to get my DVD player back), I vowed never to set foot in a BB again.

So last week when Aqua Teen Hunger Force went on sale at BB, I took the ad to Circuit City to pricematch... and was told by the employee that CC not only didn't have it in stock, but they don't even carry the title.

RonBoster 01-18-04 08:46 AM

In KC we have Nebraska Furniture Mart (here and Omaha). They usually have the new hot titles for less than $15. When you go to BB (much closer than running out to NFM) some sales assoc. will call NFM and some won't. In fact, the last time, I lost the ad somewhere between the car or within the store and the clerk said she had seen the ad herself and would price match (no phone call).

What amazes me are the clerks who are swamped with a number of customers neeeding assitance and they still will spend 10 minutes calling the other store. Is it worth saving the company two dollars and pissing off a half of dozen customers in the process?

Ron

JustinCleveland 01-18-04 09:04 AM

It's funny, I've only pricematched a couple of times at Best Buy, and while it took a couple minutes for them to pound out the information from the flyer I brought in, it was relatively painless. I got the James Bond box set deal pricematched from Target, so I essentially got sets 2 and 3 for 55 bucks a piece and also landed 10$ worth of reward zone certificates. Same with season 3 of South Park. I was in-and-out. The only reason I pricematched instead of going to Target was because of Reward Zone points.

But if you're not getting that, is it really worth saving a couple bucks and losing your cool? I'd think not. But maybe that's just my easygoing self talking. Those clerks at Best Buy are no better or worse than your are. They have a job to do, and they're doing it the best they can. Would you like it if someone came into your place of business, demanded that you give them a discount, and started dropping f-bombs at you if you didn't? I doubt it. Think about that, next time, before you make an ass of yourself for 3 dollars.

Jah-Wren Ryel 01-18-04 09:58 AM

I am all for people losing their cool when BBY CSR's hassle them. As one guy pointed out, how stupid is it for a CSR to make trouble in the first place? They don't get paid any more for it.

I'm a big fan of reciprocity - what's good for the goose is good for the gander. If a store's policy is to make dealing with customer service a PITA, then good for them when a customer who has been given a big pain gives some of that pain back. If you are a CSR just doing your job, just following the rules, then quit if you don't like it. If you can't quit because somehow there are no other jobs in your town, then take it out on your fellow employees. Spread the misery. When store management gets a clue and decides to stop giving grief to their customers, then the grief coming back will stop too.

Of course that's easy for me to say, after getting and giving my fair share of grief at BBY, they are now my store of last resort. If it isn't a misprice or a huge loss-leader, I don't even bother going in.

Mickey 01-18-04 10:11 AM

It really matters on the time of day you go. They've only called the competitor once and that was with the Media Play $9.99 South Park Season 1 deal. Media Play didn't have it in stock (which I already knew) but they pretended to call and said it was $19.99 not $9.99. So I skiped it and came back after work and no questions asked.

High School Kid = Just ring you up and get you out of my face

College Kid or older = Maybe I should check with the manager first

I can't speak for your TRU but I took the day off work (not for ATOTC or SP) and I can see how they sold a few hundred, if they indeed had that many. The store was pretty packed and I didn't see anyone in line that had less than the minimum (I think you were allowed 2) in their hands not to mention a few double and trippled (if not more) dipped.

Groucho 01-18-04 10:20 AM

You Pricematchers crack me up. That the item has to be in stock is nothing new. Why would they match a price that you can't actually buy the item at? :hscratch:

And, of course, there's the inevitable story about the guy who goes ballistic and is yelling at everybody because he couldn't save a few bucks. Boo hoo hoo.

You kiddies are going to die of a heart attack before you're 25.

discostu1337 01-18-04 10:38 AM

I always kinda assumed that the other store had to have the product in stock.... I never pricematch, since it never works. They always lie and make up some excuses. Last time, I tried to pricematch Fry's Alien Quadrilogy price at Best Buy. Best Buy told me it was not the same Alien Quadrilogy "ours is better" and would not do it :)

One thing I didn't mention that also fueled my ire, was that a buddy from work went with me, and checked out before me. And GOT the pricematch from the same checkout girl. And after the whole thing was over, I'm sure she continued to give pricematches. Thats what kills me, the old "left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing."

I am proud. The man tried to screw me, in a snotty way at that. But I stuck it to the man anyway. I shouldn't have done it, and I wouldn't have if I wasn't pushed into it by the punk-ass Best Buy placed in Customer Service for gosh sakes.
