WHERE Do YOU Purchase your DVDs?
Okay, I realize that this is an age-old debate, but I have heard so much back and forth, that I would be interested to know what the company line is between all of us.
Personally, my breakdown is: 40% of them at DDD 20% Wal-Mart 20% BB B&M 10% BB.Com 7% DVD Planet B&M 3% eBay In the last 6 months, it has been primarily DDD, but overall, it is the above. --LVM |
80% Columbia House
8% DVDEmpire 8% Amazon 4% other discount places |
90% Columbia House
8% Best Buy 2% Target, Circuit City, etc. |
I am going to start researching CH through this forum, as it looks pretty interesting.
Back in the day, I was a member of CH for VHS  --LVM |
rough estimate
70% DDD 20% CH 9% Bestprices.com, amazon, others 1% B&M (bb, walmart) |
50% Amazon
30% Costco 20% (Target, Walmart BB) i try to shop more at amazon and costco. gift cards and the 2% rebate from costco. hee hee. :) |
For new releases I go to Best Buy.
Catalog titles are from Deep Discount (as long as I'm not in a mad hurry to get them). Criterions are from DVD Planet (thanks to the 35% discount and free shipping over $25). I also use Columbia House, though not to the extent of some of the folks on this forum. |
A rough approximation of where I get my DVDs:
50% Columbia House 10% DDD 10% Amazon 10% ebay, half.com 10% DVDEmpire 5% B&M 5% DVDTalk exchange forum |
40% DDD
30% Best Buy (Only NR or Discounts) 20% Costco 5% Circuit City 5% Amazon |
It depends, If a DVD is a new release, I am most likely to pick it up from Target or Best Buy.
But if a disc has been out for a while and I want the lowest price, I go to Costco. Since they don't have the greatest selection, I will check Fry's and CC next. (BB probably has the highest non-sale prices!) But this is now it usually breaks down: 30% Fry's 20% Circuit City 20% Best Buy 10% Costco 10% Target 10% Other (mostly online trades) |
Probably close to:
2% DVDEmpire 23% Media Play 25% Circuit City or Target 50% Best Buy |
50% Circuit City/Best Buy
20% The Wherehouse (used section) 20% Costco/Target 10% Online |
50% DDD
25% Columbia House 20% Best Buy, Circuit City, Taget (New releases) 5% Other (Amazon, Ebay) |
For the next 12 months, I will be buying DVDs exclusively at FYE, Amazon, and Virgin. Don't ask...

My purchasing has changed dramatically over the years. From the early days I used to be fairly exclusively between Ken Cranes and DVD Express and probably 50% off my current collection was purchased from there. Then I switched to DVD Empire for many years and I would estimate 40% of collection is from them and still purchase occassionally from there until finding DVD Pacific recently and now use them for probably 95% of current purchases but that would equate to maybe 5% of collection to date.

20% DDD
30% BB 30% CC 10% Costco/Bjs 10% Wallyworld |
All of my anime DVDs (60%+ of my collection) are purchased from RightStuf.COM. The rest are purchased from either Amazon.COM or DeepDiscountDVD.COM. Which is based on price since sometimes Amazon.COM is cheaper after ShareTheLove is taken into account.

I'd say 40% CH, 15% Target, 15% Circuit City, 15% Best Buy (online only, no Best Buy for 60 miles), 15% Wally World.
