Explain to me how does First Class work?

Just wondering because I can send a letter first class and it will take a couple of days for a nearby delivery but whats the deal w/packages.Should it take a week for something to travel 400 miles?Something is wrong when it takes twice as long for first class delivery compared to media mail delivery for the same approx. miles.

I guess packages can't go through the OCR machines and thus take more lazy butts to manual sort.
