I do agree that the person who argued over the 5 bucks is raising his blood pressure for nothing, but please get rid of that mentality that cartoons are just for kids please.
I wasn't suggesting that the movie was only for children...I was just pointing out the irony of starting such a dirty shouting match over such a wholesome film, and hoping that the buyer was getting a copy for himself and not some young child.

I would hardly consider The Lion King a "cartoon." -eek- -wink-

chanster 10-19-03 01:46 AM

First off, he raised his voice at me first. I merely said he was lying to me, and that pissed him off. He started going into me, how nobody can call him a liar, even though he had been caught red-handed. So I responded, I am not going to cowtow to anyone lying and then yelling at me for calling it out.

Ask anybody about the price of Lion King at Circuit City that week. It was 14.99.

namlook 10-19-03 03:31 AM

A more fun way to handle it would have been to start chanting "liar liar pants on fire..."

Sorry! I meant to say animated movie. Family entertainment. I am a fan of animation, and japanese anime. Shame on me!

Videophile, it's one thing to be firm and "stick to your gun" but it's a whole other thing to start a shouting match in a public place over $5. You can stick to your guns, be firm and still be polite. Stooping down the manager's level is just sad and uneccessary. But if a person's dignity is worth $5, who am I to argue?
Why does everyone keep bringing up this idea about dignity over $5? If someone was giving me attitude and raising their voice at me (especially if they're wrong), you'll bet that i'd respond! Personally, i think it's more dignified to argue your (correct) point (whether it's over $5, $100 or even $0.50) than to walk away with your tail between your legs just because the other person decided to lie and raise their voice at you..

Perhaps that doesn't make me very "dignified"? It's the "principle" of it to me.

Some provocations require a response, but not every one. If a visably disturbed street person called you out, you probably wouldn't respond, right? Some people and situations are simply beneath contempt.

If confronted with a belligerent, lying video store manager, I'd probably shake my head, walk out, and try not to give the guy or the business a further thought. To me, it just wouldn't be worth the continued hassle.

You're right. Some situations don't deserve a response. However, in this case, the stubborn-ness of the manager would cause me to have to go somewhere else to buy the item, wasting my time -- and i'd still have the GC to worry about for a later time. I COULD try to sell the GC if i decide not to patronize Blockbuster again, but even that is a hassle.

So, in this situation, the lying manager would be causing me more hassles down the road. If i don't get this taken care of now, it will cost me more time later. Thus, he gets a piece of my mind.

But i do agree with you that some situations deserve a shake of the head only -- especially the YMMV deals. But i don't think this fits in the YMMV scope.

If he raised his voice first, that's the perfect opportunity to make HIM look like a loon in front of his own customers. I understand the pride issue, but you passed on a golden opportunity to make him look like a nutball.

What a bunch of lightweights. I would have thrown the manager through the plate glass window, then gone outside and pushed his head through the drop-box slot. That would teach him. :)

I'm pretty sure his thick head wouldn't fit in the drop-box slot.

Seriously, a lot of people are stating that they would just walk away all calm and cool and collected as the manager yelled at them and that this calm attitude would make the manager look like a bigger idiot. I know that you might feel that way as you sit at your computer right now typing the way YOU would react to the situation, but if you have some liar yelling in your face after giving you the run-around while your stress-level and adrenaline-level and frustration-level are rising, you "might" just react by yelling back in return.

In the heat of the moment, I believe chanster reacted about as calm as can be expected given the circumstances. (Somehow this thread is starting to sound like the people who want to fire/sue/condemn police officers who end up roughly handcuffing a murder suspect after following him of two-hour high speed pursuit. People react to the stimuli around them.) In chanster's case, nobody ended up in the hospital or in court. Just some bruised egos, perhaps.

Very possibly. I think the main difference would be most of us would not brag about it on an internet message forum.

chanster 10-21-03 05:48 PM

Hey renaldow - read my first message. Was I bragging about it? No. I wasn't.

It does read like you are bragging about it. If you say you weren't, I'll take you at your word. I do question why you posted it then, if it wasn't a brag.

chanster 10-23-03 08:08 AM

Because this is the store forum and I thought it would be of interest to folks that constantly pricematch.

Have to agree with this. The few times I've ever been in a situation like this, I've always just continued making my point in as calm and quiet a voice as possible. People that are itching to shout and cause a scene can't stand when they don't get you as ruffled as they are.

When I worked customer service in a grocery store, I always did this whenever confronted with a customer screaming her head off about something. I had several get mad that I wasn't shouting back. Some people just enjoy causing scenes; it's best to take away their thunder.

This is so true. I have used this tactic myself and it works - too much fun to just sit there calmly and watch hot-heads get more frustrated because you won't join them/escalate the sitch. -smile-

To each his own is correct, and by the way if you've seen the Lion King (I guess you havent), its not about an hr or so of cute talking animals so I dont know what the heck you're talking about. Its a coming of age film that deals with death and responsibility. Also I was pointing out that its Family entertainment, for EVERYONE>

Which blockbuster was it! I happen to be in the Chicago area.

yes I did see it. i would never comment on a film I never saw. Took my kids to see it at the theater when it cameout..they enjoyed it very much. But like I say i would never sit down with a bunch of adults and watch it...
There is no need for you to justify what you like to watch to anyone but to come on here lambasting people for calling disney flicks kids films makes it seem like you are trying to justify something. what difference does it make what people call them? If you enjoy them then who cares?
