Is Amazon sitting on preorders now?

In the past when I have preordered from Amazon with the free shipping option, I would normally receive items on the day of release. The order would be in the "shipping soon" or "shipped" state the Friday before.

I preordered Scarface and Warner Legends. Both were released today. Scarface status changed today to "shipping soon" and Warner Legends (preordered over a month ago) shows to ship 10/6.

As long as I get them in a reasonable amount of time it's not that important but what gives? Have I been singled out for some reason or are others in the same boat? Has Amazon started some new policy?

Laser Movies 09-30-03 01:56 PM

I really don't see any difference with my pre-orders this week at Amazon. I very rarely ever get anything from them on release date. However, they did ship my order for the Warner Legends Collection last night by UPS. I also ordered the Scarface giftset and that one is listed as shipping soon.

But your delay might be from a lack of supply of the Warner Legends box that I heard mentioned in another thread located at HomeTheaterForum. For some reason this set was reported hard to find at many B&M and online stores. Amazon is now listing availability of the Legends box as 3-4 weeks. So that is probably why there is a delay of your shipment.

Okay here is the thread I mentioned.

Thanks for the link Lasermovies.

Well, I'm glad it wasn't just me but disappointed with Warner Home Video. It boggles the mind. If you have N number of items guarenteed to sell you should produce at least that many plus some percentage.

Actually it is news to me that they ever shipped out before street date. I only started preordering with Amazon in the last three months but each time it usually ships on the day of release or the day after.

Right until this last order everything that I ever preordered from Amazon (~15 titles) has been shipped the weekend before the release date. Maybe it was because I preordered so far in advance of the releases or that I use the Amazon card. But as I said this is not the case with Scarface nor Warner Legends.

I doubt that is the reason. I usually pre-order months in advance and use an Amazon card, and typically receive my orders 1-3 days after the release date. Maybe it has something to do with the warehouse they ship your orders from.

I've been ordering from Amazon for 6 years now, and I've only gotten 2 DVD's on the release date while using the free shipping option (or earlier equivalent). I usually receive my DVD's about a week after the release date; I figure that's acceptable, since I'm using free shipping. Seems that they tend to ship out the free-shipping items 1-3 days after the release date, like LASERMOVIES said. However, I got shipping confirmation for the Warner Legends box today, and the Scarface Gift Set the other day (Monday).

Also, it's been hit or miss with Amazon shipping out partial orders with the free shipping option; I've recently had 2 partial orders shipped to me within the past month or so!

You are probably right about where it's shipped from.

Scarface shipped yesterday from Coffeyville, KS via UPS. This means I'll see it in a week or so. Am I having a senior moment or did Amazon used to ship (free) via USPS media mail?

Status still says that Warner Legends will ship Monday. We'll see.

I have moved... when I lived in decatur (a town that had a ups center) I could get get stuff the next day even using free shipping. Now that I live half an hour away... I am doing some major waiting.

Cosmic Bus 10-09-03 09:17 PM

I'm sick of their processing and shipping times. The digital camera I bought last month took nearly three full weeks to arrive.

And last Saturday I placed an order for some CDs that were being released on Tuesday (10/7) that I knew wouldn't be available around here. Rather than take their free shipping option, I chose to pay for 2-day shipping so I'd have them before the end of the week. Today they finally send me an e-mail thanking me for my order -- five days after it was placed! -- and informing me that my Ted Leo EP was scheduled to be shipped out tomorrow. Thanks a lot, you idiots. Not only is it going out two days after the CD was released, my 2-day shipping becomes four days because you're sending it at the end of the week.

To make things worse, their site is now claiming the second album I ordered (The Books) won't be available until 10/14 despite the group's label listing it as being officially out and available as of 10/7. People have purchased copies elsewhere, so the thing is definitely out there right now. Judging by previous small CD releases, if they even stock it at that point, it'd be a miracle... At this rate, I'd be lucky to have the CD before November.

I plan on e-mailing Amazon about having the 2-day shipping charge refunded and will cancel the second CD. Way to go, guys! You just lost yourself a customer.

I have been having this problem as well and quite frankly I am getting sick of it. The last 4 orders that I have had have all been very late.

Hobgoblin 10-16-03 10:36 AM

Same here.

It is not just pre-orders that Amazon sits on with free shipping but even in-stock items that "usually ship in 24 hours".

I had ordered a couple of in-stock books with free shipping. They shipped my books exactly 10 days after the order date. I called up the Amazon CSR in the meantime and she told me that the books are in stock but free shipping items have the least priority and will generally ship in 7 to 10 days for in-stock items. Pre-orders will ship a week after release date. It took two and half weeks to get my books in the end.

Right now I am checking the ship date for the Indy Jones set which streets on the 21st: Shipping estimate 28th. Sux. But with coupons, stl and trivia, I am getting the set cheap. So I am OK with it.

Without coupons, I would not touch amazon with a 10 foot pole. Amazon is the worst e-taler out there probably closely followed by BestBuy.com.

Overstock.com is the best e-tailer out there who always make sure that we receive our items ON STREET DATE.

I have a pre-order with them for a few DVDs, the last one of which is Finding Nemo which will be released on Nov. 4. Their estimate for when it would be shipped is November 10. Why would they wait five days after the release to mail it on an order that was placed in September? (there were two other DVDs I ordered, one was released on October 7, the other will be released on October 28, Finding Nemo is the last one and will be released on Nov 4)

Well amazon.com said....

I have a preorder for "looney tunes Golden Collection" DVD. Its supposed to be released on October 28th. However my shipping estimate says it wont be shipped till Nov. 8th. I think its an OVERESTIMATE. In other words I know they will ship it before then. I have seen Amazon ship preorders out to me and I get it the day of release or 4 to 5 days later.

You are one of the lucky 0.000000001% of Amazon customers then. Even with paid shipping, Amazon NEVER ships DVDs BEFORE release date for you to get it on street date. I have shopped with Amazon since 1997 and I know this for a fact.

Quick edit: I have been shopping with Amazon since 97, but I started to buy DVDs from them only after Reel.com went belly-up, which was sometime around 2000 I believe.

flylikeaneagle 10-16-03 05:18 PM

I am a long time customer and have received DVD's on release date at least a dozen times...

This seemed to be norm.

Currently I am waiting on MATRIX which shows it has shipped but still has not arrived.....

Not sure if Columbus day played any part of it.....

Yes, some e-tailers like overstock.com ship DVDs so you get them on release date. But we are talking about Amazon here.

Dozen's of times I have received DVDs from Amazon on the release date.

Even beat the release date once.

Still waiting this time though....

Well, their estimate was that it would ship on November 10, but they actually mailed it on November 1, three days prior to the release date. Since it was mailed from Kentucky (I live in Illinois), I believe that I will have it on Tuesday, possibly Wednesday.

Ginwen 11-03-03 10:22 AM

I usually get my DVDs from Amazon the day after release date IF they ship from Nevada. If they ship from Kansas or somewhere else, it's 2 or 3 days later. The only exception was Warner Legends, which took several weeks (I think that was due to not enough sets being shipped by Warner though).

garolo 11-07-03 02:19 PM

Well it does appear that the problem I had was an anomoly. Through no fault of their own, Amazon did not have enough stock to ship to all that preordered Warner Legends. All subsequent orders that I had with them have shipped 'on time'. All have arrived within a day or two of release date.
