When the Ohio taxation people (whatever their official title is) contacts a few other large State taxation folks and obtain a list of sales companies made to users in your state you may receive a bill. I know several years ago Indiana (I'm a former resident) had a line on the State tax return for mail order purchases (essentially the same as this thread) made without paying IN tax. I was relatively big in Amateur Radio at the time (but a poor college student). Apparently the IN state folks had contacted some of thelarger out of state firms and a few fellow Ham club members received a b ill when they matched their names to sales lists. I believe the penalty was to charge double the regular tax rate.

The article I read in the Washington Post yesterday said it was on-line stores like Walmart.com etc. that at the present time do not collect taxes because their on-line stores are run from a few states but they also have B&M in many states and people who bought on-line wanted the option to return items bought on-line to a B&M store. Atleast thats what I got from it. I guess it might have some implications for on-line only stores in the future but I'am not that worried with the on-line stores I deal with. Anyways its not that different in Va. and it would be easier if the on-line stores just charged the sales taxes so we do not have to figure them up on our state taxums.

I noticed that Dell started charging Feb 1.... :( this will put a serious kink in future deals...
