Help! PS2 DVD Player.

I have a DVD player and yesterday just bought a PS2. Should I sell my old player? Are PS2 DVD Players any good? I had my DVD player since December 00 and it's a Panasonic.

I don't want to get rid of something if the damn PS2 DVD Player is wack. But at the same time why have 2 DVD players.

Any advice is appreciated.

This will probably get moved to the hardware forum, but in the meantime, I can tell you that it's pretty doubtful that the PS2 will perform playback as well as your standalone DVD player. The picture is not as sharp and the controls flat out suck, especially if you use the controllers. It is good for emergencies, as in having a player when you bring the PS2 to a friend's house who doesn't have DVD yet (is there such a person? :))

Oh and I doubt you'll want to have DVD playing contributing to the death of your PS2, especially if you do a lot of gaming. I've had my PS2 for just over a year and it's starting to go wacky on me already.

DO NOT SELL YOUR DVD PLAYER!!

I made the mistake of selling mine when I got my Xbox. Dumb move!! Right this minute my Xbox is being repaired and I have no way of watching my new movies till it gets back.

Use your DVD player for now and save the PS2 as a backup. Just in case.

It's always better to have one that you don't need than to not have one when you need it.

The 2 DVDs I've watched on my friends PS2 looked awful. We watched Clerks the Cartoon, I've never seen so many compression problems even on badly encoded porn files.

Yep, the PS2 makes DVD's look like crap!!! Don't sell your Panny that's for sure.

I have also had a bad experience with using my PS2 as a DVD player.

Moving to Hardware.

Thanks a bunch you guys. I will keep the Panny. I play alot of vid games, so I don't want to kill my machine.

Again thanks.

What? Are you shilling for Panasonic now too? I thought the mods had taken care of you already....

My PS2 with the new drivers that are included with the remote made my PS2 dvd's look just fine.(the new PS2's include the newer drivers but no remote)

Not sure why some say they look bad unless they have the older drivers or a bad hookup or

By the way why did this get moved into the store forum?

Is this a bouncing thread?

Might I suggest the video game forum since it is about a game console ;)

Same here. I don't like the mechanics of it as a DVD player, even with a remote, but I've tried it out as one and even just using the composite cable to hook it up it looked OK as a DVD player. Didn't see anything wrong with it.

I used my PS2 as a DVD player with a remote but it was a hassle to navigate the menu with the remote. Also my Matrix would not play back without getting stuck towards the middle of the movie. This movie plays fine in my Toshiba DVD player. I recommend getting a separate dvd player for movie watching.

Mine has a ton of dot crawl, especially on the reds!

really strange my matrix copy has played fine in my PS2 twice

true I have always used the dvd remote drivers so maybe that is the reason.

I have not noticed that dot problem on reds either.

Maybe some dvd players are better than others even within the PS2's.

I must admit to not using it as often as a player since I bought another dvd player giving me three dvd players not counting my PS2 and two tv's.
