Blockbuster and FULL FRAME :(

I went to a couple of blockbuster to see if this is correct...

If there is the option of widescreen or full screen in a DVD...Blockbuster will now only put the full frame on the shelf for rental. The manager at the store said that this was corporate orders from the head office. If this upsets you, like it does me, please go to Blockbusters webpage and send them many e-mails showing your disgust. Thanks

There was only a half hour between your first and second posts. Give it some time.

That's what you get for going to Blockbuster!

jarsim 10-25-02 01:02 PM

Misinformation? Doesn't explain why my local Blockbuster has the widescreen version of Spiderman . . . I know someone who's an employee and they can rent movies before the release date. Saw Spiderman Widescreen FROM Blockbuster last night!

Static Cling 10-25-02 01:08 PM

It looks like this may not be entirely correct. I called the Blockbuster Customer Service number at 972-683-5959 asked if the policy mentioned above was true... the lady I talked to said that it all depends on what kind of rentals each individual store observes. If a store sees that widescreen movies get rented, then they'll order widescreen. If they see fullscreen renting more, then they'll order fullscreen. It was unclear whether the store would order all of one and none of the other, or some sort of mixture.

She offered to make a note of my preference and forward it to the store I shop at. I told her I would only rent widescreen, and she asked if I had a widescreen TV. I said no, it's just that I preferred to watch movies in the original format that the makers of the film intended. She took down the store that I rented from and my Blockbuster member number, and she said that she'd let them know.

If you're concerned about not being able to rent widescreen at your local BBV, I suggest you make a phone call to the number above. If you don't want to make a long-distance phone call, you could probably call your store, get the manager's number, and talk to him... he'd probably know what to do with the info.

Although initially true (full screen only), my local Blockbuster had started to carry both when two different versions are released.....

PixyJunket 10-25-02 01:22 PM

In Dallas, we have this beautiful chain of stores (albeit now OWNED by Blockcuster) called Movie Trading Company. They are a DVD collector's haven. I love them so much. If there are 2 version of a movie they usually ONLY get Widescreen!! (sometimes both!) and if people sell them Full Frame DVDs they're thrown in the bargin bin. :D

I also got my OOP Devil's Advocate there for $12.

seems to be true , last week i went to rent Insomnia and they did not have any Widescreen . I asked the person in the counter if they had any WS , and he checked the system and said Nope ..only PS . Though i was pissed off and walked out without renting that day, i went and rented it subsequently as i had the spiderman rental card and has to use it on some movie . this store is in Woodbridge NJ .

My BB has widescreen and 'few' full screen DVD's. Guess I'm lucky ;)

My Blockbuster is the same way , they carry wide screen and full screen movies in most cases . Every movie I have wanted to rent i've found wide screen versions .

Not at all... However, and I'm absolutely 100% sure that I'm not alone here, Blockbuster can go rot. Many of us quit giving them our business years ago... So, in reality, this means nothing to me personally since I wouldn't give the worthless SOBs a glass of ice water in hell to begin with... Let alone money for a rental. But, I can understand your anger, just not the reasons why you would rent there to begin with...

Friendly advice, find another rental place and quit supporting Blockbuster. You'll be a happier DVD-er.

boston george 10-25-02 01:46 PM

No Blockbusters in the Indianapolis area are carrying Mr. Deeds in Widescreen, which is wierd because a couple weeks ago I saw mostly Widescreen versions of Insomnia there.

Goat3001 10-25-02 02:04 PM

Reasons why this doesn't bother me:

1) My Blockbuster has started carrying both Full and widescreen

2) I use Netflix and rarely go to BB (only go if I have a coupon or want a VG)

3) The local Blockbuster has a new wave of employees and they're all rude. I understand that customers can be annoying but you have to be polite.

4) NO PORN ;)

Ginwen 10-25-02 02:12 PM

As far as I can tell, when there's a choice, the BB closest to me tends to have more Widescreen then P & S.

They also usually have the unrated version even when there's a choice of rated vs unrated (most recent rental was Y Tu Mama Tambien, and it was the unrated version).

Mourn 10-25-02 02:45 PM

The Blockbuster i go to in Toronto carries only widescreen (or at least the vast majority of them). However, the one near me in Kingston (a smalll town) carries mostly p&s, but it seems they order either p&s or widescreen depending on the perceived audience of the film, i.e. Queen of the Damned is p&s and Insomnia is widescreen.

I've checked out the mom & pop rental places, but they carry only the p&s where available.

I wish Netflix would expand to Canada.

TheOne 10-25-02 03:06 PM

Or Blockbuster does not carry unrated movies. They get the R rated version.

Don't mean to open a can of worms.

pro-bassoonist 10-25-02 03:21 PM

I am in tye same boat as GOAT3001......I dont go to Blockbuster that often because........

THEY DONT CARRY PORN.

Teknomaagi 10-25-02 03:44 PM

Gladly Blockbuster isn't in Finland :) We dont generally NEVER get P&S versions out of Recent hit movies.

Corky Roxbury 10-25-02 03:50 PM

My blockbuster is wierd in that all of the rentals that are available in fullscreen/widescreen releases, they will only have the fullscreen to rent, but then when it goes to PVD, they more widescreen than fullscreen. It's like the twilight zone.

greatjedi 10-25-02 04:03 PM

I emailed them. My local BB had WS everything until last Tuesday's new releases. Not only that, but they just mixed all the DVDs with the VHS. I couldn't find anything.:(

Striped Socks 10-25-02 04:09 PM

Thanks for your input......

Previously, BB had been getting better, but recently with Mr. Deeds, Insomnia, Scooby Doo, (and any other recent release with an aspect ratio choice), they have been slowly waning away from WS to enhance sales.

You also have to also realize that a lot of BB stores aren't corporate, there are a lot of franchises, which can do whatever they want (as far as choice). So if your BB hasn't started yet you are lucky.

What stinks.......Movie Trading Company is awesome, but I've spoken to a few managers at the stores in Dallas, and they said that BB is either going to shut them down or turn them into BB.

I don't care if Full frame is on the shelf, but just have an equal number or more of Widescreen as well. (statistics show that the rental/sales are generally mostly Widescreen more than Full). I hate BB also.......I thought they were trying :(

costanza187 10-26-02 06:04 AM

I noticed just looking at the Scooby Doos that they were all full screen...guess my local Blockbuster is falling into this too.

Mac484 10-26-02 12:10 PM

My BlockBuster two weeks ago used to carry all widescreen and now all new rentals that are ordered are full screen unless the DVD comes with both on the same disk.

Also, yes they must have been bored at my store to. Because all DVD's are now mixed in with VHS, just plain stupid.

And if that is not enough insult to injury, just went to rent Mr. Deeds, a whole section of full screen of course but upon walking out there were a stack of Mr. Deeds widescreen for sale only!!!

Here is the big question.- I have been to numerous forums on the net and have yet to find a forum advocating Full screen over widescreen. Most forums are created advocating Widescreen. Have any one else noticed this? I guess BB has taken to ignore this point. Wake up BB!!!
