what is the best online DVD store?

I live in rural Nevada, 160 miles from Reno, so most of my DVD shopping is done through the mail. I was just wondering what online DVD store people preferred for consistently competitive prices, fast shipping at a fair price, and ease of returns. I've been very happy with DVDEmpire lately. I get my pre-orders in my mailbox the day before release, which is much better luck than I've had with Amazon.

I prefer DVDEmpire too. One of the things I like the most about them is that you can make changes to your order online. With DDD, DVDPlanet, etc., you have to e-mail them with any changes, additions, deletions, etc., but with DVDEmpire, it's totally automated. I'm constantly adding titles to my pre-orders, and removing other titles, and it's so nice being able to do it right on their site, instead of having to send an e-mail every time.

BTW, did you know that with DDD, you can't add an item to an existing pre-order? They told me once an order is placed, they can't add anything to it, and that I'd have to place a second order. So I cancelled the entire pre-order, and placed it with DVDEmpire instead.

I'm currently pissed at DVDPlanet, because I pre-ordered Friends: Season 1 at $41.96, and when they shipped it, they charged me $48.98 for it. Sure, they refunded the difference after I brought it to their attention, but it never should have happened in the first place.

I WHOLEHEARTEDLY endorse DVDEmpire. They have great pre-order prices and as mentioned before, I usually get my releases on Monday before the stores sell them. Their ordering system is great and VERY flexible!

I guess I would have to say DDD, as well. I've only had a couple of purchases with them, but they seem to have went well. Keep in mind, I called them instead of placing an order via the internet. I, too, am currently passing on DVDPlanet. On my last 6 or 7 orders, they have charged me the higher, 25% off price. Therefore, I am no longer buying from them until they correct this "problem".

why would this matter? since shipping is free, if they want to ship them separately, i wouldn't really think it would matter.

I usually prefer DeepDiscountDVD. I most often find the best prices there and enjoy the free shipping. But for pre-orders, DVDEmpire's site does beat DDD hands down.

Shipping is only free via Media Mail, which I hate, since it always seems to take forever. I have my orders sent Priority instead.

DDD!

I Windows(98/2000)shop all over the web getting vital information for reviews, edition and technical information and come back to order on DDD.

Yes their site doesn't have all the best bells and whistles...in fact they're very barebones. But how do you think they keep their prices down?

If you have limited amount of time and unlimited money...go ahead and purchase from others. I'll send my time and save my money, thank you very much...
Plus, I receive them pretty fast being in St. Louis. They're somewhere in Illinois.

Isn't free shipping with DDD 1st class, not media mail? What does this mean exactly?-- not media mail:
The default method of shipping at DeepDiscountDVD is USPS Standard Delivery at NO CHARGE. Standard delivery is available to all 50 United States and U.S. territories, orders are filled the day after we receive them. Backorders and Pre-orders are shipped the day we receive them.
I've had very good luck with them and shipping has been fast, but I don't remember it being media mail. What is "Standard Delivery" exactly???

I've placed many orders over at DDD, all shipping Media Mail. However, if I place an order to ship Priority that has backorders/preorders on it, will I get charged for shipping once, or each time?

Another vote for DDD, though I hear nothing but good things about DVDEmpire also.

I've never heard it referred to as "Standard Delivery", but a while back, I ordered from DDD and went with the free shipping, and when it finally got here I saw on the package that it had been sent media mail, also known as book rate.

No, it is Media Mail for free shipping from DDD. About 7-10 days average for me but I did have one shipment recently take 20 days to arrive and they were pre-ordered items that shipped 4 days before the release date.

I have not used DVDEmpire or DVDPlanet, so I cannot give any opinion on them. I have avoided them in favor of DeepDiscountDVD because DDD usually has lower prices.

If you're willing to read the FAQ and "for Dummies" threads in DVDTalk's DVD Clubs section, you can get yourself a good deal. CH has a large catalog, but it doesn't include many foreign, rare or Criterion DVDs, for example. It's also hard to get a cheap boxed set from them. However, I managed to get $150 worth of DVDs for $75, so I won't complain!

I've also used Amazon, whose customer service and selection are top notch, but their prices are usually quite higher than most e-tailers if you don't have any giftcards or special coupons.

You can also try to get a deal or find a rare/out of print title on half.com, where users sell new and used stuff--although I've only used them personally to buy books and sell one DVD.

If price is your concern, use DVDTalk's Pricegrabber search engine (the box is up on top of any forum page), Bargainflix. or dvdpricesearch.com to compare.

Good luck and happy hunting!

Yes, I know it's weird, but that's what they call it. I like DDD, but I wish they'd tell you up front it's media mail instead of "standard."

Amazon.com

Well, I know that the prices are a bit higher, but I like using Amazon.com. They have a terrific selection, excellent customer service, shipping is on time and speedy, and I can combine it with textbooks and the like.

I've had great luck with the following companies. DDD, DVDmode, HMV, hitmenow, amazon and overstock. I normally try to make my purchases from the store with the best price.

If you pay for Priority Mail, your first shipment of available items goes out by Priority Mail. Any remaining items ship at no charge by MEDIA MAIL. This makes me VERY hesitant to use them, as I don't want media mail -- it can take 2 months to Hawaii. So I'm afraid to place an order, pay for Priority, then have 1 item sent Priority and 4 sent media mail (in case the "in stock" availability is not totally up to date.)

DVDSoon: good prices and shipping to Amsterdam only takes 4-5 days.
Beware:they charge your card the moment you order.
Always check if your title is on hand.
I stick to pre-orders with them.
