Cancelling an amazon.com order with applied Gift Certificates?

what happens to applied GC's if you cancel an order with amazon? Was going to Share the Love with a friend who is going to order the same book but I've already placed it on order and am using GC's to pay for it. Will I lose those GC's if I cancel the order?

They should go back into your account if they are not expired. Are these promo or non-promo GCs?
