Is there any way to deactivate the security tags in unopened DVDs at home?

It's the day after Xmas and 'tis the season for returns. I received a DVD as a gift that I don't want and then I later found out it was bought online via an Internet retailer. I don't want to go through the hassle of having my gift giver return the DVD to the e-tailer.

Therefore, I want to take it back myself to a B&M store for an even exchange. Is there any method to deactivating the security tags so I don't trip the alarm when I enter the store? Now, don't laugh...would a magnet work? Thanks!

(For those that think this is questionable, many B&M stores have very relaxed policies for returns without receipts after Xmas and DO allow this. I just got back from a store returning items without a receipt. I told the employee taking my return that the items were gifts and I didn't know if they were bought at that chain of stores or not...but they allowed the returns for a Gift Card without a hassle.)

I'll go out on a limb and guess you haven't opened the dvd. A magnet should work but don't count on it. If it were that easy then anyone with a magnet could deactivate the sensor tag and steal from the stores.

I've taken unopened DVDs to Suncoast for exchange with no problems in the past.

Why bother ... half the time they don't deactivate them ... it should not be a problem, most stores have a greeter meet you and put a sticker on the return anyway .. so they know you didn't steal it anyway.

Perhaps a commerical demagnetizer at Radio Shack would work.

Hmm, reminds me of a scene in Fight Club.
