What's black friday?

I've been hearing about it, but what is it?

Otherwise known as the day after Thanksgiving... The hellish day where all malls and stores are packed to the rafters with screaming moms, dads and kids.

Have fun.

POWERBOMB 11-16-01 10:18 AM

It is the day after Thanksgiving, considered "black" because it somehow signifies the kind of holiday season the retailers are going to have in terms of revenue. They all want to be in the "black" as oppsosed to in the "red."

I forgot to mention that the Tuesday before Thanksgiving is called "Super Tuesday" and is in reference to the major new releases on cd and dvd for the year.

Fighting temptation to make un-PC joke. :D

Thanksgiving day or Black Friday?

I always thought that the best deals were on thanksgiving day, not the day after!
Is there a real difference in terms of price between the two days?

Majority of the stores either close completely or close early on Thanksgiving day so that their staff can have the bird dinner at home. The next day the stores open early to lurk customers in with their loss leaders. That is the day in the year when people shop like they never shop before (queue up before stores open, queue up at checkout for hours, people screaming and cursing, ...)

Welcome to the forum redah!

The day after Thanksgiving is a madhouse (is that un-pc?), with most stores having big sales that morning, so you will see many 6am to 11am sales.

Many department stores will pass out things like free Christmas ornaments to the first 500 people, etc.

In particular, Best Buy seems to have great DVD related sales, last year they had a number of $8.99 DVDs, including Unforgiven, Analyze This, Batman (1989 version), and L.A. Confidential (these are the ones I picked up, there were a number of other titles). However, their lines were horrible, literally 60' to 80' in length. The way around Best Buy's lines are to simply take their ad to a store that does price matching, like Wal-Mart, Meijer, or Circuit City.

I actually look forward to the madness and have a list of four or five stores to go to that Friday morning, but you have to know where to go and what to do (for example, don't buy anything at Best Buy if you can price match somewhere else).

thanks for your answers, but as I recall the best deals I made in the past were always on thanksgiving day.
I remember last year waking up at 5am driving to BestBuy with my dad. The cool thing is that there's a number of great stores (almost) next to each other (BB, CircuitCity and Staples on Rockville Pike in the greater DC area) so my dad and I were waiting in front of different stores with the ads covered in black marker (I circled the things I wanted him to get me). I made great deals at Staples (my favorite store).

The lines were so long there was a TV chopper flying over our heads. Of course a lot of people (who saw the "madness" on the news) thought we were crazy. But I don't care, I'm a die hard bargain hunter, and I'm proud of it (most students are on a tight budget, right!)

I got movies, music, a burner, and a bunch of things (most of them free after rebate). That's why I'm surprised to hear about this whole black friday thing.

I guess I'll have to wake up early on thursday, and on friday.

Its a holiday dedicated to those who practice the art of Black Magic.

And dont forget, if you show up at Best Buy either

a> carrying a black cat which hisses on command OR
b> assembled as a coven of 12 witches in full costume

You get 15% off all DVD titles...so come prepared !

At least thats the way it works in Canada.
