Dear bigstar.com customer,

Unfortunately we have been forced to cancel your pre-order. Due to the highly competitive nature of selling online and the associated costs, bigstar.com will no longer sell movies online but will remain a resource for movie information.

Hokuto72 06-26-01 03:05 PM

Guess we both got the same message. I deleted my thread so we can keep this centralized.

Bastards took away my great price on the Akira LE Tin.:(

Ditto! :(

This is certainly very sad for all of us DVDTalkers who spend a majority of their money online. As competition dwindles, those who are able to stay in business raise their prices. It is no mistake or coincidence that preorders at Amazon have been following this trend: 40% - 30% - 25% - and lower and lower. It seems as if with each bankrupt dot.com Amazon is able to lower their % discount on preorders and instock items.

We are in sad times indeed . . .

B&Ms, here I come.

naughty jonny 06-26-01 04:11 PM

Again. Bloody Bigstar. You'd think they could at least honour the requests and preorders they had.

Ditto again! GRAAAAAAAAH!

agitprop 06-26-01 05:07 PM

Another one gone the way of Reel.com!

bradm20 06-26-01 05:23 PM

Good riddance!

digitalboy 06-26-01 05:29 PM

Oops, there goes another Akira : LE Tin!

dirtrat 06-26-01 06:02 PM

I had a $8.50 credit with them for several months but between there high prices and high shipping and not being able to use the credit for pre-orders since the credit was left over from a gift certificate, I could never find anything worth buying. Good Riddance is right! The only thing they did have that I liked was the ability to watch trailers of the movies.

flylikeaneagle 06-26-01 07:24 PM

Their site does not say anything about this.

try to buy something..

msharkm 06-26-01 08:35 PM

diacritic,

DVD prices are mainly controlled by the studios. The only reason there were amazing deals in previous years was because online stores (incorrectly) thought they could buy loyalty - and they had tons of VC money. What we have to hope happens is that DVD disc sales tank and they will be stuck with tons of discs and no where to sell them. Then they will be forced to lower prices.

Agreed !

When they pulled the ole coupon value change on me I pulled my business from them.

JamesBrian 06-26-01 09:48 PM

And to think we used to wait till the monday night 10 minute window to use a coupon on a pre-order. Anyway, the recent trend of price reductions on catalog titles, good values on loaded DVD's, cheap Hong Kong movies, budget line older films and B&M loss leaders is fine with me. Now I can buy a DVD for $10 or $15 instead of worrying about $10 off $30 coupons plus shipping and tax and backorders.

Remember, while Reel and Bigstar are gone, DeepDiscountDVD has picked up lots of the slack and there are still deals to be found.

HoNuts 06-26-01 10:46 PM

I still have fond memories of Monday Night BigStar. A lot has changed since I first started buying DVD's online 2 years ago, and not for the better.

R.I.P BigStar

darkside 06-26-01 10:50 PM

Now I have to scramble to replace my Akira Tin. Another one bites the dust.

schlitz100 06-27-01 09:47 AM

Does anyone know what will happen with current orders? I got a free $50 gift certificate thru my credit card for giftcertificates.com. I used it for a $50 bigstar gc. It is non-refundable. I spent it on Sunday. My order is still "processing" and I haven't gotten a cancellation email. If I lose this order I will probably lose $50.

Thanks

And we all know what that means...

BTW, will buy.com takeover. The whole no ship outside US GC fiasco was one of the craziest times on the bargain forum.

dvdkollecter 06-27-01 11:36 AM

Hi! I'm new here, but I also placed an order using a $25.00 gift certificate. My order status went from will ship in 1-2 days to 1-2 weeks. Bigstar.com won't answer their phone or their email. Called Giftcertificates.com and they said that once they send out the certificates, they're no longer responsible. They're still selling certificates to Bigstar as we speak! I think I just lost $25.00!

schlitz100 06-27-01 11:54 AM

This sucks. Mine went from the 1-2 days to 1-2 weeks also. Ugh!

dvdkollecter 06-27-01 11:59 AM

Has anyone received an email from them or read any articles about them going under? They were always so quick to ship before. Just wondering if they're still going to ship what WAS in stock last week. There isn't a DVD or VHS left on their site now! I ordered Exorcist and Showgirls and it said "in stock" last Friday. AAAARGH!

Mark Holtz 06-27-01 03:18 PM

Any relation to...

Does bigstar.com have any relation to Blackstar.co.uk ?

junkie 06-28-01 11:02 AM

I never liked them anyways

DVDKrayzie 06-28-01 12:30 PM

After the Monday night thing was gone, i dont think i ever used them afterward. I think i actually forgot they even existed until i saw this thread.
