What I don't understand is when there is a tuesday release coming out everyone has to post Circuit City, Best Buy, Media PLay ect, ect prices. But the way I look at it. All the prices are the same. Anyone who purchases dvds on Tuesday know that the prices are generally 18.99 or 19.99..So why always post these big sales...I want to see a sale where I am saving a little more than a dollar!!! Walmart also Is one of the cheapest carriers and have a easy return policy..So I will stick there, unless I need a hard to find title..

Although bigger cities have a larger variety of stores to purchase DVDs from, Walmart generally is available to many small towns. That may not want to drive over 100 miles to save a buck. I guess there are some people out there that think they are to good for walmart!

You know, I'm constantly amazed by people who trash WalMart and Kmart on the internet. One, cause I find lot's of good DVD deals at WalMart, and two, if you people hate the place so bad, where do you get your dry goods? I mean like toilet paper, shampoo, underwear? WTF?

I have yet to smell urine at my local Wal-Mart. But then again, I live in a very small town with a population of 19,000. We don't even have a mall (we do have a Hastings, however). Big city Wal-Marts may be different.
As to buying new releases at Wal-Mart, Wal-Mart doesn't get every DVD that is released on a Tuesday, or at least the one here doesn't. Hastings does, but since they are the only video rental store in town, they can charge high prices and get away with it.

sydneycam1,
No disrespect meant towards your post. We buy a lot at Walmart- everything from DVDs to diapers. They have cheap prices on many things including DVDs, of which I've bought many. The new $9.96 section is pretty good including The Quick and the Dead and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. For new releases the Walmart nearby is just average- Traffic and CTHD are both 19.88.
For the record I've never smelled urine at Walmart.

I don't like my Walmart, not just because my local one is like a dirt mall, but the dvd's are locked up behind a case. I have to ask the cashier to open up the case to see what features are on the dvd. Very inconvenient. Not all Walmarts are dirty like mine, but I was never in their dvd sections, are all Walmarts dvd sections lokced up? My K-Mart is the same way.

I have never been to a Walmart or Kmart where they were locked up..One thing I notice at differant walmarts though is someplaces run dvds over the medal thing or whatever that is. On a positive note for Walmart they are usually pretty good by having alot of copies available for the newer movies. I just wish that they would carry more Box sets than they do..Now what I wonder is how Walmart smells like urine when the place is usually jammed full of people!

Big city Walmarts are pretty bad in my experience. The one here is nasty, dirty, and I seem to almost always smell urine.
If it's what you've got, and you like yours, cool with me. Same goes for KMart. There's too much selection here to go to one of those places unless I absolutely, gut-wrenchingly have to.
As for dry goods, TP, soap, etc.. is either bought at the grocery store or the drugstore. Undies are purchased at a dept. store.

I also avoid Walmart as much as possible. A couple of them around here are usually pretty dirty, and one time the entire store stunk like vomit (I don't think they cleaned the mop bucket before mopping the entire store).
Their prices are pretty competitive with other stores, but their selection sucks. The ones around here only have about 3/4 of an aisle (one side only) full of DVDs. There's no real incentive to shop at Walmart when I can get the same thing at the same price from a cleaner store with less likelihood of it being out of stock.

I must live by a bunch of thieving punks (which I do). This annoys me. If it was nation wide I would be ok with the lock cases, but why should I put up with a locked case, when there is a BestBuy, Circuit City, and a Borders within five minutes of the Walmart and don't lock up their dvd's? Must be why I never buy dvd's there.

Heh, you guys can keep getting screwed at Walmart (or worse, Tower... home of the MSRP). I'll be at the flea markets getting the best deals. It amazes me that people are so willing to pay extra at the big chain B&Ms. Oh well, that just leaves more bargains for me!
Hmm, think I'll pick up Requiem for a Dream and O Brother Where Art Thou for $13 each tomorrow. And maybe Cast Away for $15. Maybe I'll get lucky and score another $10 Criterion.

One thing I don't understand about Wal-mart:
I live in Tulsa. Not exactly NYC, but a decent sized city. When I go to Wal-mart, all the employees have real thick hick Okie accents, like they bus them in from some small town out in the sticks. It's like you pass through their doors and all of a sudden you're in Claremore. I just don't get it.

I have nothing against Wal-Mart, and shop there often, but will not buy DVDs there. First, my Wal-Mart keeps them in a locked case, and only the electronics cashier can get them out. So first you have to wait in line just for the cashier to get the DVDs out of the locked cabinet. Then, if you don't want to pay for the DVD in the electronics department (which I don't always want to do if I'm buying a large amount of stuff or am paying with credit and want to pay for everything at once) you must be escorted around the store by a security person until you get to the cash register. It's humiliating. I'd much rather do business at a store that doesn't make me feel like a criminal.

The Wal-Mart here is pretty clean. But like I said, this is a very small town, there aren't enough people to mess it up. Also, they have a nice DVD selection, plus they're not locked up. The amount of security stickers on the DVDs are enought to frighten anyone.
Whoever mentioned this, is the Wal-Mart in a bad neighborhood?
The K-Mart here is a way different story, however. The store is trash, they have a horrible selection of anything, and their DVDs are in a glass case.

p.s. my walmart's dvd shelves have been 1/2 empty for a year now. They have the price tags for numerous movies, but good luck actually finding the dvd there. They restock everytime it snows here, evidently (i'm in phoenix).

I too have noticed that Wal-Mart smells like urine, no matter which department I'm in, but then I realised, I just pissed myself! BTW, they also have a security guard posted by the DVD section. What a bummer.

sydneycam,
If you think your WalMart is the best thing since sliced bread and you have no problems shopping there, more power to you. I've got several WalMarts nearby and will occassionally shop there if they've got a great deal, but in my experience their selection is poor and their prices aren't always that great. Take, for instance, Cast Away, which was just released. Best Buy has it for several dollars cheaper than anyone else in my area (IIRC, $5 cheaper than WalMart). My nearest BB and WalMart are side-by-side. Guess where I got Cast Away at? Sure, I could've price matched at WalMart. But my theory is that if a retailer can't be competitive up front and wants to rip off the majority of their customers on that item, they don't deserve my business on that item if there's no other benefit of me shopping there (store is closer, I've got gift cert, etc.). And I'm in complete agreement with Pasolini. The ads for retailers aren't posted here by people shilling for those retailers. It's done so we DVD shoppers can get the best deals. The ads that are posted are usually posted in days advance of their availability in the stores. Apparently nobody willing to post the ads has access to the WalMart flyer early. And shopping at many WalMarts is hardly a pleasant experience. You've also got to take into account that there's a a large percentage of people that are anti-WalMart in every case because of their ability to drive small mom&pop stores out of business in small communities.
