Re: Official 2022 NFL Off-Season Thread

B5erik has waited a long time for this, so I dont mind letting him have his victory lap.

Seahawks signed Chris Carson for 2/10 last year. He was a year older than Penny is now, and with a longer resume, higher floor, and lower ceiling. I could see them offering Penny 3/15, but there could be another team out there that believes in him and offers more, even at the devalued RB position.

Russell has a full no-trade, and last year his agent said hed waive it for the Broncos, Giants, and Saints. It was kind of an odd list, not clearly based on contention or brand-building or whatever. I doubt anyone knows what hes thinking this year, and hes likely waiting to see what happens in the org first.

Thanks! A lot of people have taken shots at me for believing in Penny over the last 4 years, but I have never doubted his ability to run on NFL defenses the way he has.

All of this makes me question Jerry Jones' sanity. Zeke wasn't worth half of what he got paid. He hasn't produced elite numbers, and his backup is almost as good (sometimes better). That deal, and how it hasn't worked out, may have gotten other GM's to give second thoughts to signing running backs to big money deals. Let's face it, it's a short lived position due to the wear and tear, and there seems to be a constant stream of productive backs coming out of college - available in the 3rd, 4th or even 5th rounds! Not necessarily elite backs, but very productive and more than good enough to get the job done.

Russell has a full no-trade, and last year his agent said hed waive it for the Broncos, Giants, and Saints. It was kind of an odd list, not clearly based on contention or brand-building or whatever. Yeah, that's the part that I don't understand. Why, exactly, would he want out of Seattle? To win another Super Bowl? OK, that would make sense, but why would he be willing to go to the Broncos or Giants last year, then? They aren't winning a Super Bowl, even with a great QB. There's something missing in this story. (Which I alluded to before - is it friction with Pete? I can't see that, as he's a great players' coach, but who knows?)

The Seahawks were only a few plays and a couple missed field goals away from being 10-7 or 11-6. They're right there. Does a better team need a QB??
The Saints and the Broncos are the two obvious teams who could contend right now with him.

^ Well sure -- any time you have a chance to fire your seemingly successful first-year head coach and bring in an unknown positional coach from the fifth-best team in the AFC, you take it, right?

I figured they'd do something like that. It's an exceptionally well run team.

The Diggs inclusion is mildly amusing. Yes he had a ton of INTs. But if you look at the metrics, he was nearly one of the worst at his position. He got torched regularly.

I was surprised to see Deebo over Justin Jefferson, but he does have almost 1800 total yards and 14 TDs even after missing a game. He threw for one too.

If he only got pass breakups, I woudn't be happy with the torching but turnovers are gold. So my advice to Jimmy G is keep trying him.

That Penny guy has to be something else to be considered a tier above that guy.
Interestingly enough, there was no RB selected for Second Team All-Pro.

Did Fed Ex dump Aaron Rodgers in a ravine in rural Alabama or something?

Those are the three guys with the most passing yards for the season. Brady had almost 200 more attempts than Rodgers on the season.

5,300 yards passing and 43 TD passes... and he's 44 years old. That's nuts.

Well they were already interviewing GM candidates, so I suppose the writing was on the wall.
It goes to show : It's easier to talk like the definitive expert on TV than it is to actually make the right choices IRL year after year.

If I start looking at a lot of Day 2 candidates in the NFL draft, and promise to pick them in the first round, think they'd give me the job?

That would make you better than Bobby Beathard in the mid 90's. Every year, he'd get to Round 2 and trade away the next year's #1 pick for a guy he could have just waited and gotten in the 4th or 5th round. He'd risk that future #1 pick on a guy from Stephen F. Austin who was no higher on anyone else's draft board than the 4th round. Every year, 3 or 4 years in a row. How did the Chargers go from the Super Bowl to 1-15 in only 3 years? Bobby Beathard. A former genius who had built up the Redskins with a bunch of gambles and hunches that paid off, suddenly had NONE of those gambles or hunches pay off with the Chargers 10-15 years later. He didn't adapt to the changing times in the NFL and became the worst GM in the league. Oh, and he drove off Super Bowl coach, Bobby Ross, too.

Whenever I see someone take a REAL reach on a draft pick, I think of Beathard.

So, no one else with a home town that they've lived their entire lives in or around? Wow. That's genuinely surprising.

I always root for the teams representing cities that either haven't ever won a championship, or haven't won one in decades, but other than that why should I or anyone else care about cities that they have nothing to do with?

FYI, I have commented on a lot of other teams and players, but I guarantee you that most people here aren't aware of how Bobby Beathard botched his job so badly with the Chargers in the mid to late 90's. He's remembered for being a genius in Washington, but that turned out to be just as much luck as good judgment. So when someone talks about trading away a 1 for a 2 I immediately think of Beathard. Not only did he do that, he'd then pick guys he could have gotten in the 4th or 5th rounds (so he gave away those future #1's literally for nothing). It was sheer insanity. No one has ever done that like Beathard.

(Oh, FYI, I'm also a Cowboys fan. I became a fan in 1977 when they had Staubach and a rookie named Dorsett. I lost my enthusiasm for the Cowboys 20 years ago as Jerry Jones did his best to dismantle his dynasty. Had I lived there it wouldn't have been as easy to give up on the team. I still don't believe in them as legitimate contenders - not as long as Jerry 'Daniel Snyder' Jones runs the team.)
