US dominating but that was a pretty PP goal by Canada.

Its strange that they’ve got Chinese security throwing reporters out for standing in front on unflattering areas yet they have the freestyle skiing set up in front of the Gotham City chemical factory that the Joker fell into.

Italians win the Mixed Curling gold, 8-5, over NOR. So damn impressive. Undefeated run.

And ITA -1.5 pays.

Just watched the Men's Super-G. Cool to see Cochran-Siegle get the silver in the Super-G. That was so close, but Mayer is so good.

Re: Beijing 2022 Olympics Thread

I watched the early men's skating last night and really enjoyed the Mexican skater, Donovan Carrillo. He was ranked very low in the world, but skated a clean routine and gave off a lot of positive energy, looked like he was having a blast out there. Trying to find his performance on Youtube and am not having any luck.

I was watching snowboard parallel slalom and there were dudes 41, 41 and 37 and the later (Benjamin Karl of Germany) won. I was like, this is no longer a hip sport for rebellious youth.

They really need to find a way to improve that.
I like the idea of short track speedskating, but it's the execution that fails, for all the reasons you cite. I remember seeing the sport praised vs. the long-track variant, saying, "Would you want to see the Indianapolis 500 conducted by cars going out two at a time to see who gets the quickest time?". Of course not. We all want to see side by side racing.

The solution is actually rather simple; make most kinds of contact legal. Then you might see skaters try for a little separation, instead of this usual 8 laps of speeds that literally I could keep up with, then a two-lap sprint with all the inevitable collisions and falls because the skaters have purposely stayed in a tight pack the whole time. If the result of someone getting inside you and arm barring or clipping your skate is "too fucking bad, they win you lose" then maybe you'll try to win the race right from the beginning rather than saving it for the very end.

Re: Beijing 2022 Olympics Thread

So far it's been a miserable Olympics from an American perspective. Returning Gold Medalists failing to defend their events, Mikaela Shiffrin's complete failure in her first event, the women losing to Canada in hockey, certain athletes dropping American citizenship to play for China, and the general feeling our athletes don't seem prepared. If Nathan Chen somehow doesn't win Gold in Men's skating, this could be the worst showing in an Olympics which I can remember.

Re: Beijing 2022 Olympics Thread

No Americans made the finals (16 racers) of either the men's or women's parallel giant slalom. It doesn't even look like we even had women in the field that qualified at all (??). Out of curiosity, I look at the 2018 results and we had no racers in either final then either.

I wouldn't have figured we would suck so badly at a snowboard event.

Is this the Olympics or the Hunger Games?

I never thought about it before, but would think that the athletes would bring their own food with them.

I'd actually be afraid to eat that crap in case the mystery meat was Peng Shuai.

And of course it had to be Lindsey Jacobellis in her 5th Olympics, 16 years after notoriously throwing away the gold medal pulling a showboat trick in that snowboardX final in Torino.

It does seem like the big air competition is set against the background of a nuclear factory

Is that safe?

Not a shock coming from China

Gotta give credit to her rival, Vlhova. She had a mediocre 1st run but a tremendous 2nd run to go from 8th to gold.

Comebacks for all of the medals - silver was 7th after run 1 and bronze was 5th.

Nice touch shot by Shuster to get 2 and give USA a 5-4 lead over RUS heading into End 9.

NBC finally posted his routine, it's a joy to watch. especially considering he's the first skater from Mexico in some 30 years.

Solid draw by Shuster to win it in the 11th end, 6-5.
