It’s so much fun having the exact same conversation every October. At least adding Theo was something different.

But because they have fewer resources and less money to play with every single mistake they make on a player personnel level is amplified. One bad decision can literally ruin an entire season or two.
Oh trust me, I didn't miss your point.

Hey, you guys are the ones who keep telling me that I'm wrong and the Padres CAN win it all. You'd think at some point they'd at least make a strong playoff run to prove you're not totally out of your minds.

Seriously, you can't keep saying, "Bad ownership," and, "Bad management," when they've had multiple ownership groups, Presidents, and General Managers over the last 20 years, and yet they've gotten the same results every time. Meanwhile, the Red Sox, Yankees, and Dodgers keep having 90+ win seasons, regardless of managment changes. The management has to be a trainwreck for those teams to win fewer than 84 games.

So are you trying to say that it's harder to win a World Series in Boston or Chicago than in San Diego? We both know it's not, so laughing at the point of successfully doing a harder thing getting more recognition than doing the easier thing is kind of stupid.

It's not like the Cardinals who have huge secondary and tertiary markets. San Diego has no secondary markets, let alone tertiary!

The Padres have always had less money to play with than other franchises in much smaller cities (because of that secondary and tertiary market thing).
goddamnit - you just had to bring tertiary markets into the argument.

He has a reputation for player development with Cleveland, which sounds good to me.

Sad news A's broadcaster and long-time catcher Ray Fosse dead at 74. I recall he took a leave of absence a few months ago because he was battling cancer.

I see the name Ray Fosse and my first thought is Pete Rose.

Re: 2021 MLB off-season & hot stove thread

I looked back and he took a leave of absence in August. The fact that he died two months later, the cancer was probably terminal.

I've seen some of his work as a broadcaster from catching a few snippets on MLB Extra Innings. He was a good analyst.

But, yeah I do recall the collision with Rose that left him with some severe injuries.

What amazes me is that he battled cancer for 16 years.

Re: 2021 MLB off-season & hot stove thread

Fosse looked like a superstar going into that ASG, hitting .313/16/45. Who knows what kind of player he wouldíve been without that and other injuries. He hit a total of 43 homers for the rest of his career.

The Cards fired their manager?

Nice reward for taking a marginally talented team to the playoffs.

Mike Shildt fired as St. Louis Cardinals manager over 'philosophical differences'

Whoever made that decision seems to have based it on how the Cards performed in the first 60% of the season and not the latter 40%, or was it likely that the decision was made by the All star break despite the vast improvements?

Apparently Tony La Russa will not be a candidate elsewhere and is returning to the White Sox for 2022...

Actually it sounds like it happened very quickly. Apparently the Cards had to get permission from MLB to announce it today on a game day rather than an off day which is what MLB prefers for major hiring and firing announcements.

The Cards' firing is very surprising. Tells me something happened we don't know about yet. MLB has a really strict edict about these announcements.

Something something about different philosophies. Blah blah blah

I like to think they donít do it now if his replacement isnít already lined up.

Yet another manager fired due to differences with management over Kant's beliefs on rationalism and empiricism

It most likely comes down to Shildt saying they need to spend more money and the front office wants to sit on their wallets.

Re: 2021 MLB off-season & hot stove thread

I wasn't a Schildt fan by any means, but something about how this came about smells bad.

That - and I think Mo should have been given his release papers a long time ago.

Re: 2021 MLB off-season & hot stove thread

I was reading fan speculation that the friction mightíve happened if Shildt wanted to dump Jeff Albert.

I feel like it has to be more than that. Because just about every manager thinks their team should spend more than the front office wants to spend.

Re: 2021 MLB off-season & hot stove thread

Cubs owner Tom Ricketts sent out a letter to fans via email earlier, the actual letter is in the latter part of the article:

https://www.bleachernation.com/cubs/...will-use-them/

Not much actual substance there, if they really go out and do what they said they would do then it's something else.
