You mean Trout?

The announcer situation is bizarre. But yeah aside from Ohtani, the team is a mess.

Yes, I meant Trout. Though knowing the Angels, maybe they'll sign Trump or something.

Yeah, obviously Kyle Seager isnít the player he used to be, but his lower and defense were still good enough for 2.0 bWAR and 2.5 fWAR. You donít want to pay him $20M, but he surely couldíve found a job. Maybe he just didnít want to start over in someplace new.

A lot of people have predicted no progress until February when theyíre looking at lost games and the shit gets real. Iíve heard that talks will resume now that the holidays are over, but weíll see.

I give credit to the Angels for successfully pitching Ohtani, but a lot of talk at the time was that they won because theyíre on the West Coast and not one of the huge media draws. So yeah, they kinda lucked into him as well. Theyíve certainly tried to throw money at their problems, Rendon made sense on paper, and bad luck has been a factor, but their owner, while generous, has helped muck things up.

It's my understanding the Angels only got Ohtani because they were the only AL team on the West Coast which guaranteed Ohtani he'd be able to pitch and hit every day.

I don't get why the Angels decided to go with this split play by play team to work with Gubicza. Doesn't seem to be really working. Obviously they like Matty V, but he doesn't even live in California and he can only work part-time and sometimes only remotely. Seems like they are really catering to his limited availability. And then they can Sutton and Waltz.

Instead of improving their pitching staff(must be a shortage of Triple A and Double A pitchers) the Orioles have decided to raise the fence at Camden Yards from 7 feet to 12 feet and move the fence back 30 feet in some locations.

More homers(270 plus) were hit in Baltimore last season and led MLB.

I will never understand why baseball does not have a rule about the dimensions of their playing field (other than the infield). Just imagine if other sports were allowed to make these changes.

I think it's a smart move by the Orioles in terms of winning games. Since their attendance is already woeful, removing those seats aren't a huge money loser. Teams bring in the fences 99% of the time for one reason - more high-dollar tickets. I'd bet good money those fences will be brought back in once the Orioles are competitive again and have more fans.

MLB would be better off in general with fewer cookie-cutter stadiums. I was terribly disappointed by the Rangers' new stadium.

I hope baseball gets their shit together. I know some people who will lose work if they don't start a season on time.

Yeah, this is a league that blew off the last month of a season along with the playoffs and World Series in 1994. Tony Gwynn had a shot at hitting .400 - and everything was lost because the two sides couldn't work out a mutually acceptable deal.

Agreed... case in point... not just within the league itself, but all the companies that license MLB are shutdown too. I read an article that MLB The Show 22 (Xbox / PS) is on hiatus until the lockout is resolved. Never knew that could happen. I sure hope those poor owners get a fair deal so they can feed their fucking families.

Yep. It's not like they are drawing fans as is. And from what I heard - most of the pitchers with some kind of promise in their farm system are lefties. So make left field deeper vs. right-handed hitters.

Unless the owners cave quickly, I think many are expecting to lose the first month of the regular season. Owners don't particularly care about losing regular season games if it doesn't drag past 25-30 games. I could see a rushed agreement in late March, then five weeks of an abbreviated Spring Training, and the regular season beginning in mid May. Kind of what happened in 1995, which was also a shortened regular season.

Yeah, multi-use cookie cutters were last big in the Ď70s. Iím not saying Talís Hill was a good idea, but at least they were trying to add character.

The Angels have hired Patrick O'Neal as the 2nd PXP man behind Matt Vasgersian. He was the pre-game host. I actually know Patrick from working with him in the past. Great dude and he's local.

Jose Mota announces he's leaving the Angels broadcast team after 20 years. Mota for those who don't know, is the son of former Dodger player and coach Manny Mota

Re: 2021 MLB off-season & hot stove thread

A Federal mediator has been called in the labor dispute between MLB and the MLBPA. This is more a signal the two sides are far, far apart and we have a long way to go before this is settled. This happened in the 1994 strike and the Federal mediator didn't help much as the two sides held out for another eight months before settling.

I don't think we are losing the entire season but I could see nearly two months of lost games. This all depends on how long the players are willing to hold out. You can already book 3-4 weeks of lost games unless the owners cave immediately (they won't).

Re: 2021 MLB off-season & hot stove thread

Yeah, considering pitchers and catchers were supposed to report on Valentineís Day, this isnít a good sign. Iíve heard that teams need a month minimum of spring training, now weíre just going to see how many games we lose.

Players are rejecting the offer of mediation and calling the owners out for an unwillingness to negotiate.

I saw an ad at our local AAA Ballpark for MLB Weekend at the beginning of March and just had to laugh. No way that's happening.

Now, I could be wrong, but isn't mediation a part of negitiation? I mean, if you don't think the other party is negotiating in good faith and impartial mediator can cut through the crap to come to a fair compromise, right?

Why would you reject that if you want a fair deal for both sides?

(Because you don't really want a fair deal for both sides, just for your side, maybe?)

Re: 2021 MLB off-season & hot stove thread

My understanding is that Federal mediators are largely on the side of corporations and mostly serve to facilitate more constructive dialogue between the two parties. They are not arbitrators with binding powers.

It does appear like MLB is perfectly content with the game's current economic structure and wants to maintain it at all costs. The players rightly recognize their salaries haven't gone up much over the last decade outside of a small handful of superstars. I think there would be agreement tomorrow if MLB would sufficiently raise the luxury tax threshold by tens of millions but they seem unwilling.
