So Yanks/Sox in a play-in game? That's an easy pass (no way I am watching that) since I would want both to lose. Unless there is a betting angle. And it would probably take 5 hours anyway.

Re: 2021 MLB playoffs thread

I didn't double check the numbers, but saw on Twitter the Cards ended the year on a 23-9 run to finish the season 90-72.

They also ended the 2011 season on a 23-9 run to finish the season 90-72. In case anyone cares to be reminded, they entered the postseason as the Wild Card against the favoirtes (the Phillies) before defeating the Brewers in the NLCS on the way to a title. And in that series, they beat the Phillies best pitcher and future HOFer (Halladay) to advance. A sign of things to come, perhaps?

just hoping the Cardinals make a good showing Wednesday. I will be pissed if they fall behind early and revert to old habits, like the first 5 months of the season.

I've thought the same thing. Their turnaround coincided with playing a cleaner game. They eliminated the crazy number of walks and played outstanding defense. I'd rather the Dodgers advance because of Scherzer dominating or Betts or one of the Turners deliverring a big hit, then mistakes made by the Cards. Should be an outstanding matchup.

Re: 2021 MLB playoffs thread

Another tweet caused food for thought:

The Cards had a 2% chance at making the postseason at one point. They go on an unbelievable run to clinch a spot. Now they're back to a 2% chance to win the championship.

No argument with the math, especially the path they'd have to take to advance. I can't help but see the irony in the situation.

Re: 2021 MLB playoffs thread

Cashman needs to rethink his roster approach. The Yankees of the past few years have not really been built for the playoffs. Way too many easy outs in their line-up and fragile pitching staffs.

If I were a Yankees fan, Cashman needs to move on and let someone else handle the team.

Hopefully the Cardinals can do everybody a favor and dispose of the Dodgers tonight.

For one day only, mostly everyone in baseball is a St Louis Cardinals fan. 😂

Re: 2021 MLB playoffs thread

I am tempted to take a flyer on the Cards at +190 or better in a 1 game shot. Scherzer is an awesome regular season pitcher but it's not like he's been lights out in the playoffs.

He struggled in his last two starts for whatever reason. If he does again tonight I imagine that Doc wouldn't wait too long before he pulled Max for Buehler or Urias

Buehler isn't on the roster since he pitched on Sunday. But yep, both starters won't last long if there is overwhelming evidence that they don't have it for some reason.

I read earlier in the week that someone said they would be glad that either the Yankees/Red Sox would be eliminated after Tuesday night, but sad that either the Yankees/Red Sox would advance to the division series. I figured folks might have the same attitude for the NL game with 2 storied franchises competing who have had a great deal of success. If by some chance St. Louis does squeak by, I'm curious if they'd retain some of those folks cheering them on. The Giants aren't on the same level as the Dodgers when it comes to spending, but they've had more than their share of postseason glory over the last decade.

Expect Manfred to tweak the wild card if the Dodgers don't advance.

Re: 2021 MLB playoffs thread

If it is changed, I like the "Twice-to-beat advantage" playoff that is used around the world. Maybe if the #1 WC team has 10 or more wins than the #2 WC team, then it goes into effect.

From google:

What is the meaning of twice to beat advantage?
#1 seeded team holding the twice to beat advantage, i.e., they have to win only once to clinch. The No. 2 team has to win twice.

It's a way to create more elimination games. The problem with baseball is that it is a rhythm sport with near-daily play for 6 months. Probably why you see WCs do well once they advance. You don't want teams sitting in baseball too long even if it rests their pitching staff.

Re: 2021 MLB playoffs thread

The NBA makes the lesser teams win more to advance to the 8-team playoffs in it's play-in tournament.

But the only reason it has a play-in tournament was because too many teams were tanking at the end of the season and it looks like MLB is following the same path.

Iíve always felt that if you get hit by a pitch on ball 4, you should be awarded two bases.

I guess I never realized until today how much Max Scherzer and Adam Wainwright look like each other.

I think there's been 9 innings of anxiety packed into these first 6 innings.
