I would also like a woman head coach, to keep up the Cs tradition of "firsts" (as they were the first team to start an all black lineup, and the first team to have a black head coach).
The Celtics seemed to be in good position to hire Kara Lawson or Becky Hammon, or at least Chauncey Billups or Sam Cassell. But now Carlisle seems too good to pass up.

Didn't expect this type of trade to happen so soon. Sad to see Kemba go, even though he didn't live up to his own ability for us. I'm not familiar with Brown but it seems like a lot to give up for a passed his prime Horford.

Maybe this means we'll make a run to sign Chris Paul? I can't imagine Pritchard is the plan to be the starting PG.

I agree that seems like a lot. Guess they really want to get out from that Kenna contract.
How many First Round picks does OKC have this year now? Half the draft?

Undersized point guards with degenerative knee issues tend to fall off quickly on the wrong side of 30 *Unless your Chris Paul

Good move for Boston imo,iKemba is one of the top 3-5 worst contracts in the league. Horford comes off the book in 2022 so if he isn't useful to Boston they still come out ahead.

Wow, that was fast. Al's second year is only guaranteed for $14,500,000 in 2022/23.

As for who starts at the point, that's gotta be Marcus, right? I think the question is who plays PF, or maybe they resign Fournier and he, Brown, and Tatum play the 2-4.

Does this mean Thompson will be traded? Or Time Lord?

Has to be Thompson, right? He has been great but Williams has more upside and is cheaper. I also think they'll resign Fournier.

Yeah, that seems weird to give up your first rounder just to get rid of Kemba but then you see how much Walker is making and it makes some sense. 36 million next year and 37.6 million the year after that?

The Carlisle thing seems weird, if Cuban really wanted to keep him could he have really just walked away from his contract like that?

It's giving up a First to get rid of Kemba and take back Horford.

I
don't know if Stevens got a good deal or not, but it's probably never a great idea to make the first deal of your tenure so early in the off season and with a GM as savvy and experienced as Sam Presti.

Yeah I mistyped. I meant getting rid of Kemba for a first and Horford.

Yup. The first is due to Kemba's contract. Needed to add something for anyone to take it.

Re: Official 2021 NBA Off-Season Thread

Trader Brad strikes again!

They really wanted to dump Kemba’s contract, and Horford was often mentioned as an unwanted piece who could offset some salary in a trade. Any on-court value he provides as Timelord insurance will be a bonus. I guess Moses Brown is an undrafted center who has played for a couple teams in his two-year career but showed enough flashes last year (including a 20-20 game against the Celtics) to move beyond two-way contracts. Might be something there, I guess.

Smart starts at PG, and the Athletic says they saved $20M in cap space, so maybe they can re-sign Fournier. I would’ve liked to see Stevens’ first first-round draft pick, but he likely would’ve joined the Neesmith-Langford pile of maybes (throw Moses in there too now), and moving Kemba was a better use for it.

Re: Official 2021 NBA Off-Season Thread

It is kind of amazing that OKC/Presti got a 2025 protected draft pick to take on Horford, then got another draft pick to trade him away, and that's after he sat out the last part of the season as a healthy scratch. I'm curious how they're going to rehabilitate Kemba and trade him away for more draft picks.

They now have a staggering 18 first round picks and 18 second round picks... in the next seven years. Including four first round picks this year.

If they're generally standing pat, then yeah, seems like Thompson is the one to go. But if they are making a blockbuster trade, then Williams could be part of that.

Well, Stevens still has the entire front office staff, including Zarren (assistant GM involved in everything). He didn't just walk in and trade with Presti, and nothing about this trade seems off to me or indicates that Brad doesn't know what he's doing.

It looks like they did something amazing with Horford, getting picks for him on both ends, but remember, they just took on an over 30 6' PG with serious injury problems who is owed $20M MORE than Horford.

Re: Official 2021 NBA Off-Season Thread

Kemba was only signed 2 years ago and I don't recall anyone killing the C's for signing him. He was supposed to be like the third or fourth biggest prize in an historically elite Free Agent class. Did he regress terribly or were the injuries just a new thing that nobody saw coming?

Re: Official 2021 NBA Off-Season Thread

He was injured when they signed him but I don't think they expected the injury to linger like it did. I mean he was basically load managed the entire season and still missed a game in the post season because his knees just couldn't go. When he does play, he can still put up stats but if you can only do that every other game it doesn't help that much.

I do think that if Presti feels like this team is still a couple of years away, it's not too bad for that team... it's not like they don't have enough draft picks to fill out the roster, and they can develop them and tank. Remember this is the team that sat SGA for a whole hell of a lot of the season on the way to tanking, so "the Process" is in full effect here.

Re: Official 2021 NBA Off-Season Thread

I don't recall him being injured when they signed him? He played 82 games the previous season, which was the end of a 4 year stretch where he played at least 79 games each year. His durability was supposedly one of his selling points. Then halfway through his first year he started having some small issues, went to the all star game and played big minutes anyway, and was never the same. Only played 10 more games, and much worse effectiveness.

And this year, he just never got untracked. He kept getting injured, and would have one great game where he looked the guy they signed, and would follow it up with a game where he looked terrible.

Re: Official 2021 NBA Off-Season Thread

Ah I'm probably misremembering, in which case the Celtics really have the worse luck when it comes to signing big free agents and then crippling them.

edited to add: I guess he had knee surgery in both 2015 and 2016 but you're right, he played 82 games the year before coming to Boston so it wasn't as big of a red flag as I thought.

Dirk is rejoining the Mavs as a "special adviser" for the GM and coach search. I think the idea is having him onboard is to ensure that Doncic approves of the new hires.

It was 25ish years ago when he was a rookie, correct? I don't remember (or even knew back then) the details. I guess it would depend on what happened.

BTW, Woj's tweet that the Real GM page relies on says those three guys are "among" the candidates the Cs hope to schedule 2nd interviews with, not that those are the 3 remaining candidates.

Yeah, it was something like 20+ years ago, and he settled out of court I believe. But depending on the details, the length of time that has passed doesn't necessarily matter.
