What is the thinking? Is the team fixable with the current core or will some pieces likely get moved in the off-season to get other players who might fit better around Dame?

It would likely dilute the league talent a bit but they'd be fine. Basketball is the second most popular sport in the world. I am pretty sure the league could find 24-30 more NBA caliber players in the world.

I mean for the Knicks team to compete he'd have to pull off another heist and bring Dame or someone because that roster + Kawhi isn't going to get it done.
As bad as the Knicks have been, they're still the number one team here. People were more excited for the Knicks actually making the playoffs than they are for Brooklyn's Big 3 title chances. Playing at MSG is something else.

The fact that the Nets had to trot out Harden to hawk half priced playoff tickets while those of the Knicks sold out literally instantly is pretty telling which team still have the stronger following.

The Nets should change their city name back to New York from Brooklyn. Brooklyn seems minor league-ish.

They should also change the team colors back to red ,white and blue.

You mean New Jersey? They haven't been the NY Nets since the 70's.

Reports are saying that Jason Kidd is going to interview for the Celtics HC job. I have to imagine it would be a bit strange for him putting on the gear of the team who's fans mercilessly chanted "wife beater" to him whenever he played here during those few years.

Goddam I hope he isn't the hire. Brad has to be smarter than that.

Speaking of the Nets, what happened to Jay-Z? He was super involved when he first took a minority ownership and with the re-branding of Brooklyn. Did he sell off his stake or is he just completely behind the scenes now?

Seems like the asks are: new coach, build around Lillard (for real this time), try to keep powell and everything else on the table. Strong desire to jettison CJ

McCollum is kind of like Smart where he's far more valued as a member of the franchise he's on rather than a trade chip. I mean you have to pay him 30-35 million for another three seasons.

Yeah, as good as McCollum is, itís hard to imagine them getting equivalent value considering his age and salary.

And +1 on not wanting Kidd for the Celtics. Thereís some support for hiring Becky Hammon or Kara Lawson, and Iíd rather have one of them. I could also see them going for Billups or Cassell instead of a retread.

Brooklyn Dodgers were 64 years ago.

I think Altoona,PA had a MLB team at one time(1884???) and that's as minor league as it gets.

Brooklyn Cyclones are a minor league baseball team( I don't see them switching to a MLB team anytime soon)..

They became NY Nets during the 1968-69 ABA season after a disaster of a season as the New Jersey Americans(where they forfeited a playoff game because of poor court conditions).

The New York Nets of Brooklyn.

Worked out great for the Angels.

part of my frustration right there. He's valued but not valuable. Unreliable and prone to fading, capable of occasional greatness, but not worth the money.

Lol they only did that because Anaheim was dead set against them leaving the city name out. It was only til they threatened to move they decided to back off. Los Angeles Angels is what they started with anyway.

And coach Stotts is gone. End of some sort of era here. FWIW he did a lot with the pieces he was given. Not a ton defensively, but there you go.

I get that they need a scapegoat but Stotts was not the problem with that team.

No, but as scapegoats go, 9 years is a really long leash. I think GM Olshey has plenty of blame to accept, but I honestly think that the very air in Portland breeds complacency.

Re: Official 2021 NBA Off-Season Thread

Portland fans want a championship, I get that, but here's the thing: Dame is awesome, I love watching him, he's clutch and has huge heart, but a team where he's the best player on the team is not going to win a ring barring a miracle. So if you're ok being a playoff team with a very outside shot at big success, then run it back while tinkering around the edges. If that's not ok, you need to blow it up. Which means a lot more than firing the coach.

The young players were not developing(Simmons and Little) some of that has to be on the coach
Same thing with Nurcic being undisciplined and fouling out too often and them deadass having the absolute worst defense of any team in the playoffs

Stotts wasn't the only problem with the Blazers but I am not sure what would have been the justification for keeping him when he wasn't cutting it.

This, and this. It will be interesting to see if Jody Allen has the killer instinct that it takes to do something.
