oh, gotcha. Forgot he was even drafted by them, since he was only a "Laker" for like a week (maybe the Pelicans even directed that pick, not sure).

Yeah, he has nothing to do with the other winners since they were all selected by the Lakers scouting department and were former Lakers. So many better and more obvious choices were just sitting there for the taking. You should have picked Lonzo, or Thomas Bryant, or Zuvac who I still can't believe was traded away for like nothing and is the Clipper's starting center.

The NBA on TNT crew today talked about the sudden passing of Eaton

Apparently he went out for a bike ride last night and never came home. Sounds like it was a sudden passing.

Edit: ESPN says he died from the bicycle accident

Those Layden years of the Jazz were nothing to sneeze at.

Changes to the Celtics already. Ainge is gone, Stevens will step into his role, and we're looking for a new coach. Per Woj.

I didn't see that coming. They were just talking yesterday about Stevens maybe leaving for some other coaching job. It just seemed to me like he still had a lot of life left in his coaching career.

He's young enough that he could still have many years of coaching left. I don't see how anyone could turn down that promotion.

True. I guess I'm surprised that the Celtics offered that up, but I guess they really want to keep him in the fold. He has some tough decisions ahead of him because while his team is young with two budding superstars and one was injured, I'm not sure they have enough to breach the top three in the East without doing something else.

Chris Mannix just called it "Basketball Malpractice" to give this job to Stevens without even taking a run at Sam Presti, who is from Massachusetts and he feels is ready to move on from OKC.

I wouldn't consider a hot take from a SI writer as any type of truth but OK. Presti being from one of the richest towns in MA doesn't mean anything. Nor does Mannix "thinking" that he's ready to move on from OKC. Clearly the owners wanted to keep Brad around the franchise. Whether that be due to personal relationships with him or knowing that players respond well to him is irrelevant. Plus, going with a new GM who would immediately have to find a new coach for young superstar players is a risky move.

Just watched First Take. Stevens moving to GM hit a nerve with Stephen A. the likes of which I haven't seen. He literally walked off before they went to a break.

I mean, he still needs to find a new coach for young superstar players, right?

Who's his top assistant right now?

He does but he already knows the players and IMO could do a much better job finding a coach that's the right fit, rather than someone new coming in who doesn't know the team dynamics as well.

Either way, first thing I thought of was to get on the phone with Ewing and try to steal him from Georgetown.

Bottom line is they wanted to keep Stevens. I agree with that. So the easiest way to do that is to promote him to GM.

Re: Official 2021 NBA Off-Season Thread

And here I thought the Celtics’ big decision was going to be whether to re-sign Evan Fournier.

I’d heard enough grousing about both Ainge and Stevens that it wouldn’t have surprised me to see either or both gone. I didn’t expect this, though. I agree with the general desire to keep Stevens around. Ainge certainly made some good trades, but for whatever reason he seemed better at stockpiling assets than converting them. Some of the lottery picks didn’t end up as high as expected, and some picks he flat-out blew. Who knows what would’ve happened if the Kyrie-AD plan had worked out, but that was his attempt to compete in the world of combining veteran superstars. But because Boston isn’t a desirable FA destination (for many reasons), he just had to watch as the Nets and Lakers instantly transformed themselves while he hoped to build like the Bucks and Sixers. We’ll see if having a “basketball mind” will make Stevens a success with no GM experience.

Apparently Ainge decided to step down back in March and told the owners at the time. This wasn't a decision made this week.

And Woj said that Stevens was burned out on coaching as far back as the bubble last year. I guess we're about to see what he can do with an army of second round picks.

Maybe I'm just a homer, but if they sign Fournier and stay healthy, they don't need much change to the roster. A healthy Timelord -- maybe it's silly to expect this -- is ready to take over the middle. A semi-healthy Kemba is still useful. A healthy Langford can contribute. Nesmith seems like he's getting it.

So say Jaylen is healthy and they bring everyone back: you would pick them over the Nets, Bucks, or 76ers (at full strength)? I think it's fair to question whether Tatum can flourish next to Brown kind of like there was a question about Embiid and Simmons (maybe there still is). But Stevens should know best. We'll see. It's easy to say to just wait it out and let everyone get older but man there's some killer younger talent coming up too.

I dont really think promoting Stevens had anything to do with his ability to do this new job. They just didnt want to fire him and have to pay him all that money to do nothing.

At 100% (including Kemba), I think they'd be as good if not better than the Bucks and Philly. No one is beating the Nets as-is in a 7 game if they're at full strength.

Not at all correct. Nobody was firing Stevens. He's a consensus Top 5 NBA coach.
If the Celtics had fired him he'd have been hired by another team in a couple of days and the Celtics would have been off the hook for the rest of his salary.

Yup. Kinda crazy that all the talk about him losing the locker room, being a bad coach...etc has actually stuck and people believe it. This wasn't a "promote him or fire him" situation like many are making it out to be. He didn't "fail forward".
