The Golden Knight have so many injuries that they only have 16 players in front of Lehner tonight. Their fourth line is one guy.

^ Lost to the Wild in a Shootout, but given the short bench and the fact that this was the second game in as many nights, I will happily take the one point.

More than half of the Canucks have tested positive for Covid-19 and some are reported to be in "rough shape" right now. If you had asked me which of the new divisions was going to be the one most severely affected by Covid-19, I would not have guessed the Scotia North Division.

The NHL before the season started should have made sure that the Canadian Division had their AHL teams all locate to Canada.

I was going to say then let the Utica Comets (AHL)take over the Canucks schedule but they are located in the USA.

Eric Staal's first game with the Habs, and he scores the OT winner.

25 people with the Canucks, including 21 players have this variant of COVID 19. Some are pretty sick as Decker mentioned a few days ago. Looks like their season is in jeopardy.

That's really awful. I'm surprised, and very glad, that there was no transmission to players on other teams.

I wonder if they have to shut things down if they could still trade players before the deadline, and if anyone would want to trade for them.

So Vancouver is going through that, and now I'm watching the Toronto-Montreal game, and the Canadiens' coach keeps pulling his mask down onto his chin.

Supposedly the NHL was going to 'vigorously' enforce the mask rule, so I wonder if anything will be done about it.

Cole Caufield won the Hobby Baker Award, given annually to the best player in the NCAA, Last night he played his first game with the Laval Rocket, he hadn't played in 10 days. Result: 2 goals, 1 assist. Here's the first goal:

Hobey, not Hobby.

And a Hobey Baker Award and 3 bucks will get you a small latte at Starbucks. Take a look at the list of winners. With a few exceptions like Paul Kariya in the 90s, and Johnny Gaudreau and Jack Eichel recently, you'll be saying "Who?" a lot. The 2017 winner is a regular healthy scratch for one of the worst teams in the league.

Didn't realize Taylor Hall got traded to the Bruins yesterday. That guy gets around!

Trade deadline is in like 3 hours.

Yeah, there's still people who think Taylor Hall was just playing for bad teams. Granted, he was, but after his injury a few years back he's just not been the same player. I'm glad my team actually managed to get a first round pick for him.

Leafs added another depth piece, Nick Foligno. I think they are one of the top favorites for the Cup.

Not 2021 Taylor Hall. The Buffalo Sabres paid him $4 million dollars for each goal he scored this year.

Golden Knights acquire F Mattias Janmark from the Blackhawks for a 2021 2nd and a 2022 3rd.
Not the splashy moves like Mark Stone in 2019 and Robin Lehner in 2020. But I didn't expect much.

I don't follow the Hawks. Is he any good?

Sharks traded for a goalie prospect named Magnus Chrona. If this hockey thing doesn't work out he may have a career in supervillainy.

I've heard this plenty of times before... they go all-in for a shot at the cup and still can't even make the finals.
If they don't make the finals, then it's a failure - no excuses.

The only current NHL cities who haven't had an appearance in the finals since the Leafs last did in '67 (54 years) are Winnipeg (29 years) and Columbus (20 years).
That's embarrassing.

Those sneaky Sharks got a 5th round pick from Vegas just for absorbing a little of the cap hit that Vegas had after acquiring Janmark.

I'll put the Insider trade grade up here behind spoilers. By the grade, the Knights did the worst, but I think it may be a move that helps them and it wasn't that high a price (assuming it's their 2021 2nd Round pick and not the Devils' pick which is almost a first-rounder -- edit : just got confirmation that yes, it's the VGK 2nd round pick).
Spoiler:

Golden Knights land Janmark from the Blackhawks

Vegas Golden Knights get: C Mattias Janmark, 2022 fifth-round pick
Chicago Blackhawks get: 2021 second-round pick, 2022 third-round pick
San Jose Sharks get: 2022 fifth-round pick (VGS)

Vegas Golden Knights: B

The Golden Knights had been lurking on a few deals this week. They were in on Taylor Hall. They were in on Nick Foligno. Both of those trades were going to be complicated to pull off considering Vegas' cap space limitations. (As a refresher: the Golden Knights played games recently with 16 and 17 skaters to stay cap-compliant). However, we definitely got the sense that GM Kelly McCrimmon was trying to add a jolt to his team -- especially with the division rival Colorado Avalanche looking so dangerous lately. More importantly, the Golden Knights felt they needed depth at the center position.

And so the Golden Knights went for Janmark, a player one source told me earlier in the week "could be the sneaky-best pickup of the deadline." If this looks like the rich just wanting to get richer, well, it is. This is how aggressive the Golden Knights have been lately. They may only be in their fourth NHL season, but they feel their time is now. They've seen how rough things could look if one of their regular centers gets hurt, like Chandler Stephenson.
In Janmark, the Golden Knights get a speedy player who should fit into the team identity. He can play a bottom-six grinder role, but has also been featured on top lines in Chicago along Patrick Kane & Co. He plays center or wing, so Vegas will love his versatility. Janmark has been cold in the goals department lately, but hey, so are the slumping Blackhawks. Overall, Janmark is off to his best campaign, production-wise, of his five-season NHL career. He's averaging a career high in goals per game (0.24) and points per game (0.46). He had seven points on the power play, which ranked fifth for Chicago.

The trade package, however, is rich. Janmark is a valuable player, but he's no Nick Foligno or Taylor Hall. He's also battled some long-term injuries, which have affected his career trajectory. There's no question he makes Vegas an even deeper team, and hopefully should adjust quickly.

Only reason the Golden Knights get points taken off is that they had to pay a premium for having San Jose broker the deal to alleviate the cap issues. (Janmark makes $2.25 million, but they needed help to fit him in under the cap). Vegas did have an extra second-round pick from their swap of Nikita Gusev to the Devils back in 2019.

Chicago Blackhawks: A-

For the second straight season, Chicago strikes a deal with Vegas at the deadline with the future in mind. One year after sending Robin Lehner to the Golden Knights for a draft pick, a prospect, and a younger, less experienced goalie in Malcolm Subban, the Blackhawks say goodbye to a veteran forward who played well for them. And once again, Chicago management is announcing: they don't view the Blackhawks as a team that can contend for a Stanley Cup, yet.

It has to be frustrating for the Blackhawks players, who competed so hard to start the 2021 season despite some adversity. But the team began to tail off over the last month, falling out of a playoff spot. Janmark's individual production tailed off too; he had no goals in his last 10 games.

That didn't diminish his trade value too much, as the Blackhawks got a decent return considering players with expiring deals weren't supposed to yield much this year.

Though it's dispiriting to players to see teammates like Janmark -- as well as Carl Soderberg, who was sent to Colorado -- leave, Chicago players know management is focusing on the long term. They also know their recent play didn't necessarily justify going for it this season.

San Jose Sharks: A

The Sharks have weaponized their cap space this trade deadline. They essentially bought a draft pick -- and they got their bitter division rivals, Vegas, to pay up. For a team that badly needs to infuse some younger players, what's not to like? -- Kaplan

Re: 2021 Official NHL Regular Season Thread - 100% Inter-Divisional Play Edition

The Sharks were the 3rd team in the Foligno deal as well, although they also gave up a player in Stefan Noesen. I guess if you have cap space you have no intention of using this year, it makes sense to spend some of it on getting a couple extra picks. Don't really expect much from a 5th rounder, but you never know what can happen.

Got me some very nice tickets for the Wed 4/28 game against the First-Place Avs. Access to the Jack Daniels Lounge (private lounge for the four best sections on each side) for the first time for me.

And the Habs, the last cup win was in 1992!

The Leafs look really good though, so hopefully for Leaf fans, they'll at least get to the final. That said the Habs managed to win one against the Leafs tonight, and they will face 3 more times. Since they might face in the 1rd of the playoffs, I think it's important for the Habs to show they can compete.
