Carlton would get eaten alive in today's social media climate. Back then he was just considered a character, but today's journalists would never give him a pass.

Since most HOF voters are old white guy's and most hof players probably vote the same as Schilling I would imagine Schilling being an asshole irrespective of his political beliefs also plays a bit of a factor.

His fall off was dramatic, and I put that all on him refusing to condition once he hit 30, but his 10 year peak was just too good to ignore. He's widely regarded as the best defensive center fielder of all time, and still put up above average offensive numbers (434 career HR, 350 during 10 year peak).

Andruw Jones started putting on too much weight and his career dramatically fell off at that point. I still have no idea what the Dodgers were doing when they signed him. Jones quickly went from greatest defensive outfielder of all time candidate to a barely serviceable corner outfielder. The fall was swift and sudden.

Not going out on a limb here saying most journalists are left leaning and disagree with Schilling's hot takes.

You actually know many Baseball writers? I used to work with dozens of them, most were not left leaning.

You're probably right about old school writers, but the next generation of writers who vote now are very liberal. I know cause I follow many of them on Twitter, and their timeline is filled with politics and baseball. And it isn't exactly love for Trump.

You don't have to be a liberal to not love Trump. You don't have to be a liberal to loathe him. Trump has made a lot of apolitical people political - both for and against.

I'd vote for Bonds, Schilling, Clemens, and Vizquel.

The BBWAA slants heavily liberal. Most sports journalists once upon a time were employed by large urban newspapers in deep blue states. I'd imagine a straw vote of the current BBWAA voting body for the Hall of Fame would be something like 80-85% Democrat.

Problem is, if you don't disqualify folks for being assholes or for off-field activities or change the rules to shut unpopular people out, and decide to only elect folks based on their impact as a player, Pete Rose would've been in years and years ago.

I'll vote for steroids guys and amphetamine users and guys who were jerks, but what Rose did goes to the very heart of the integrity of the game. His betting could have caused him to negatively affect the chances of his team winning. Fuck him.

Some anonymous voter voted for Aramis Ramirez yesterday. Not on here, AN ACTUAL VOTE. What a fucking joke.

I've never really minded those pity votes. No one thinks Aramis Ramirez is going to the Hall. He was a fine player for a long time.

I think the domstic violance allegations against Omar Vizquel will keep him out of the HOF as he was above 50% last year and was on a trajectory to inch up over 75% 2-3 years from now. He was borderline at best ,so looks like his fists off the field will keep him out

It did look like the writers were eventually going to enshrine Vizquel at some point. Agreed he has no chance now from the writers - Vizquel will have to wait for the Veteran's Committee. The allegations are pretty damning if everything reported is true.

Re: The 2021 Baseball Hall of Fame Ballot

Just under a quarter of the ballots have been made public by respective voters and tabulated:

Abreu - 15.6%
Bonds - 71.9%
Buehrle - 10.4%
Clemens - 71.9%
Helton - 53.1%
Hudson - 3.1%
Hunter - 5.2%
Jones - 43.8%
Kent - 20.8%
Pettitte - 14.6%
M. Ramirez - 38.5%
Rolen - 65.6%
Schilling - 74.0%
Sheffield - 52.1%
Sosa - 26.0%
Vizquel = 39.6%
Wagner - 43.8%

Hopefully, I copied these over correctly. I omitted names of candidates receiving 1% or less of the votes.

Torii Hunter is getting more support than I expected. Helton is an interesting case heavily bolstered by Walker's recent induction. I don't think he belongs (his prime is too short before he became a grinder) but you never know with this newer voting body.

Bonds and Clemens always do better in the public ballots. I’m guessing that only Schilling gets voted in this year.

It's possible but seems unlikely to me. He missed last year by 20 votes, and this year, with 25% of the ballots made public, he has lost 2 votes. And last year, he did significantly worse on the private ballots, like Bonds/Clemens territory (in the 20% lower category). And he's only at 73% right now. I would be shocked if he made it, but it is still possible.

Re: The 2021 Baseball Hall of Fame Ballot

My guess is that Schilling just misses by a few votes. Remember, the HOF didn't have a ceremony this year and will induct five people in 2021 as carryovers from 2020.

If Hunter ever hit's the 40-50% territory I would imagine some of his views that make Schilling's seem quaint will start to get published more.

Re: The 2021 Baseball Hall of Fame Ballot

Happy to see Sheffield over 50% here. I think he belongs and he more or less admitted that he didn't know that he used PED and stopped once he knew what they were. New analytics don't help him on defense as he rates really poorly there.
