I'm just glad the Angels didn't get a championship season during the Pujols years.

It would have been fine. The Cards would have convinced the Rockies to throw in some money to make it work.

Another albatross of a deal which St. Louis avoided. It's a shame Albert has fallen so far from where once was:

St. Louis (nearly 7,500) plate appearances: 2,073 hits, 445 HR, .328/.420/.617
LAA (nearly 5,000) PA: 1,163 hits, 217 HR, .257/.312/.448

I'm hopeful playing time and health will at least allow him to climb into the top 10 all time in hits (needs 80, I believe)

According to an article at the ESPN website about Tony LaRussa it said he was third in all time wins behind Connie Mack and John McGray(???).

He should fly past John McGraw this year and move into 2nd place all-time.

Also,

11 seasons in StL: 7.8 bWAR/year
9 seasons in LAA: 1.5 bWAR/year

Thatís a lot of money for barely over replacement level.

Re: MLB 2020 Off-Season Thread

Almost all of Pujols' positive value with the Angels came in those first few years. He's been dead weight on the team for several years. And he's not going to hit any of the major homerun milestones that would have gotten fans excited. I thought he had a good shot at beating Bonds as late as 2016. No player has lost more hits to the shift than Pujols.

he could have retired years ago and gone straight into the Hall of Fame.

heís only played in one playoff series in his tenure out in Anaheim. Three game sweep at the hand of the Royals in Ď14.

pretty sad.

And of course, that's while paired with the best player in all of baseball. Kind of remarkable when you think about it.

Re: MLB 2020 Off-Season Thread

Even though Fernando Tatis Jr. recently agreed to one of the most lucrative contracts in Major League Baseball history, the San Diego Padressuperstar owes a portion of that money to an investment fund.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic originally reported on Friday that when Tatis was a 19-year-old playing in the minors, he entered into a deal with Big League Advance, "a company that offers select minor leaguers upfront payments in exchange for a percentage of their future earnings in Major League Baseball."

Per Jared Diamond of the Wall Street Journal, Tatis will owe BLA an estimated $27.2 million as part of the agreement he signed with the company during the offseason ahead of the 2018 minor league campaign.

Baseball Reference says his dad made over $17m in his career.

why the fuck would he feel the need to make that deal?

Ew, that story about Tatis is gross. How much money did they front in exchange for $27M on the back end?

Probably close to a mil. It says 1 million is typical for 10 percent. Which would have meant be owed what 34 mil or so? So 750k maybe?

Seems like that should be an illegal predatory loan tactic.

Re: MLB 2020 Off-Season Thread

Sounds like Tatis was cashing his checks at Money Tree.

I get that a lot of these guys have never had money in their lives and also need to support families, so they sometimes take chances on up-front money.

One of the nuggets that came out of the Kevin Mather/Mariners fiasco was his saying that Jared Kelenic had turned down a six-year contract with three club options. That would buy out his option years, and guarantee him money, and maybe more money in case his career didnít progress as hoped. But those three options would give all the control of his first three free-agent years to the team at absolutely no risk. No way I wouldíve taken that deal if I were Kelenic. 1B Evan White did take it, but heís an older prospect because he went to college, and he wasnít as highly rated as Kelenic, probably an All-Star ceiling rather than superstar. I have no idea what Kelenicís family situation is like, but itís possible that itís more secure than a player like Tatis or Acuna so he can take on more risk.

And that right there could be the undoing of the Padres for the next 10 years.

He's not going to be happy about giving up that much money. It is very likely going to have a long term impact on his mindset, and when players heads aren't right their careers usually fall apart.

We haven't even started the first season after this extension was signed, and he's already looking flaky. I guarantee you the Padres management is regretting this deal now.

I feel like Tatis will still be ok even if he doesn’t get all $340M.

Glad to be of service!

To serve man.

Seriously, though, that story does bring up some red flags, and that's not a good thing when you sign a player to the biggest deal in history.

I hope it works out OK, but I just have some concerns.

Re: MLB 2020 Off-Season Thread

People don't seem to understand that Tatis wasn't some super prospect every team coveted as a young teenager. If he hadn't been the son of a former big leaguer, he was just another random shortstop prospect. He was more or less a throw-in on the James Shields trade the Padres asked for. It was only after he got to the Padres that everyone realized he was a major, major talent.

Re: MLB 2020 Off-Season Thread

Here’s what Jim Bowden of ESPN said at the time:

https://www.espn.com/espn/now?nowId=...635033022552-4

The key to the trade for the Padres is Fernando Tatis Jr 17-year old shortstop that's a two way player. Might need to move to 3B in time but some scouts think can stay at short. Has a chance to develop into a high end elite type prospect has the hit tool and size to eventually be middle of the order type impact bat. Good get here for Padres. Erik Johnson will replace Shields in Padres rotation. Padres eating between 27-31m of Shields deal if he doesn't opt out.

The Acuna and Albies deals are two of the most insanely team friendly deals I've seen. I feel the Braves will have no choice but to revisit these down the road to keep those two happy.

The Acuna deal was more or less reasonably fair when it was signed at the time. Acuna would have definitely made more money playing it out year by year, but he still hits free agency at a decent age. The Albies deal was highway robbery by the team. There is really no way to defend it.

I just revisited the terms. Seven years plus two team options for a maximum total of nine years and $45M. Amazingly shitty.

The Rockies will be allowed to have fans this season. How many? No details yet.

Hopefully with testing and vaccinations, more MLB stadiums will have fans. I don't want to see another year of cardboard cutouts, empty stadiums and animated fans. That was horrible.

Heíll be 31 when he hits free agency (assuming he plays well enough for both club options). Heís playing his entire 20s at an average of $12MM a year.
