@_pauljoyce

Liverpool will have an £18m option to make Ozan Kabak’s loan deal permanent when transfer finalised. They will pay Schalke an initial £1m loan fee.

Excellent question. Looks like "partially owned" means "you don't need to know".

Gotta admire Southampton's once a season commitment to implode in the most spectacular fashion imaginable.

Is the Liverpool/City game a must win for Liverpool? IOW would a Liverpool loss today screw their season?

Yes, but not sure even a win ultimately saves them.

Personally, I thinks this is the beginning of the end for Klopp's Liverpool.

The team is so flat and plodding on the attack, and to have that happen at the back.

blah.

while I like Dortmund - disappointing to see that happen to Gladbach after only two seasons.

I don’t like how they are able to sign him during the season - while he is under contract with another team in the same damn league.

It is such a conflict of interest. I personally would let him go, but they obviously feel too much at stake to make a change. Maybe he will learn how to hold onto leads the remainder of the season.

The defense is old, slow, and terrible, and gets practically zero cover from the midfield.

Nice that they added another one.

Good day for the dogs. Would have made for a nice parlay.

Lenglet and Dest fall in the terrible category?

I know there are a lot of miles on Pique and Busquets down the middle. Alba, too.

In most cases, as defenses, I tend to think of them as a unit. Tassotti, Costacurta, Baresi, and Maldini were a unit. They operated with one brain (usually Baresi's). Going forward they had individual strengths or weaknesses, but as a defense they were one.

Lenglet and Dest can be part of a great defense. But not with the rest of them. Alba is a very good wingback, but he leaves a gap that Busquets can no longer fill against European competition. What works against Valladolid or Espanyol doesn't work against PSG or Bayern.

First, while I am not sure a different manager would result ultimately in a different outcome, Koeman deserve plenty of blame. He is not capable of coaching at the Barcelona level. I won't go into a long discourse, but he it tactically poor, routinely gets out-adjusted, and is not a very good man-manager.

I do generally agree with wender's assessment, but offer a few distinctions. The problems go beyond the defense and the midfield. There is no threat offensively besides Messi. One need only look at where his shots are coming from this season and his rate of shots. Opposing teams don't need to worry so they can attack in numbers, and attack against the porous defense.

Lenglet can be a part of a good unit, but not a great unit. He is limited. Jury is still out on Dest. He shows some flashes, but he was really poor vs. PSG. Him and Dembele on the right flank was disastrous Tuesday.

One last point, Busquets clearly can not cover as he once did, but that never was his strength. What is hurting him, and subsequently the team, more is when his passing is not at his previous levels. Part of it is his reduced speed invites more pressure, but that is not the whole story. He is turning the ball over more and doing it closer to his own goal. Not a good recipe for success.

Unfortunately, they are stuck in trying to stay competitive in all comps, while also looking at younger players. So, as much as truly pains me to say, they need to let the greatest of all time go, get in better financial shape if possible, and return to younger players/development, supplemented by the occasional galactico. Is that possible? Personally, I think the economics will be the biggest impediment.
