(ok, you probably had to pay Ingram, but I wouldn't necessarily want to. But extending Adams now?)

Re: Official 2020 NBA Off-Season Thread

I'm kind of confused about these extensions. Tatum, Fox, Bam and Donovan Mitchell were members of the 2017 Draft class who have gotten Max extensions this week. But BI was from 2016. I understand not giving him a max contract last year coming off his health concerns. Do they get a full year to hammer out these things? or is there just a short window in the Year 3 off-season and then they have to wait until the end of year 4? I know the Lakers are waiting until next year to decide on Kuz who was also 2017.

Basically before the start of the final (4th) season on their rookie contract you can sign them to an extension. If you don't, then they can become a restricted free agent (which you can match, but you risk ticking off the player if they're a no brainer max player). But it also allows you to delay the full cap hit until after that offer is officially signed.

I believe the Pelicans tendered a contract extension (non max) to Ingram before the start of the season but he declined thinking increased playing time would increase his perceived value, and he was right.

The reason Tatum's extension is usually listed at 196 million instead of the 163 million all the other max guys like Bam and Mitchell is because he made an all NBA team this past year. If he makes a second one this coming year before this contract is up he's eligible for the supermax.

Here's an article about the various options:

I think they have a window to extend after 3 years, and if that window closes the player becomes a restricted FA the following year.

So was BI a RFA this "Summer"? Never heard any discussion of anyone else making him an offer.

I think they offered him the max instead of waiting for someone else to come in and offer him something. But yeah if they didn't offer him anything he would be a RFA.

Well, it's not like there has been discussion of Anthony Davis getting any offers, but he's a FA. Sometimes there just isn't any point.

Stupid decision in my opinion. You're Sacramento. You are not luring top Free Agents to play there. Keep the talent you have. You can always trade this contract if things turn South.

And I'd take Bogdan any day over Bagley. The Kings are going to be chewed up and spit out in the Pacific Division.

Smart decision in my opinion. They already paid Buddy Hield $85 million dollars and they play the same position. You don't pay $160 million for 2 players playing the same position and have one of them on the bench. Bogdan is also quite a bit older then the rest of them and doesn't fit their timeline. The Kings weren't going anywhere even they did resign Bogdan.

Isn’t Bagley just a part-time player?

What makes you say that? He's got no chronic injury or anything that I'm aware of.

Plus there's the little matter of picking him before Doncic and Trae Young, so they are extra invested at least short term in maximizing his potential.

I havenít watched Bagley play since college so Iím totally being judgmental on the internet based on his average 25 minutes played per game.

His 14/7 numbers are impressive for those minutes.

Celtics are working on a sign and trade for Hayward, supposedly. Could land them a giant trade exception, which would be great.

In order for the sign and trade to work, the Hornets would need to find a sucker, uhm trade partner rather to take Batum off of their hands.

Who could absorb that huge a salary, let alone want to take it on?

Marc Gasol was interviewed locally here on Spectrum SportsNet. He’s currently in Spain, but is on his way to LA soon.

They don't NEED someone to take Batum, but that's what they have asked for in order to make the sign/trade (at least that's my understanding). I believe OKC is a possibility, or maybe the Knicks. And the price would presumably be draft compensation.

You are not wrong. But if you are Jordan / Charlotte, would you rather release / stretch Batum's contract, or foist him onto somebody else? Then again, probably easier said than done...

well, yeah, that's why they have made Batum a condition. But what if they can't find a 3rd party? Charlotte still has to stretch Batum. And what if the Celtics offer a protected first, or a couple of seconds, as part of the sign and trade? Charlotte would already be getting Hayward and stretching Batum, but for helping out the Celtics, with zero harm to themselves, they get a pick or two? Seems like a reasonable option. It's not like Charlotte is a title contender that cannot under any circumstances help out a close rival.

Giannis averages like 30 minutes a game and is the MVP. Players are playing less minutes per game now as a form of rest.
