“Once the winner of each division is crowned, the final 4 teams will be seeded by reg season pt totals, and the 1 seed will play the 4 seed, and 2v3.”
I wonder if they are going to work out awarding the Campbell and Prince of Wales trophies.

Devils and Capitals will be the first teams to have advertisements on their helmets. How long before NHLers start looking like Finnish Elite League players?

If the NHL is desperate for revenue(or something) then they should expand by 6 teams.
Maybe drop the expansion entrance fee by a little money so there would be more of a demand from potential expansion cities.
Sounds like the NBA is becoming more interested in expansion(current owners need the expansion money).

There is no way they expand beyond Seattle. That's 32 teams. Can you imagine how diluted the play would be if you added even two more additional teams? And where would these players come from? Which three to seven players would you not mind losing from your current squad?
Let's not pretend like this is in any way a viable option and admit that while advertising on a helmet sucks a bit, it's not that huge a deal. Better than the NBA's solution with an ad on the jersey.

The AHL (second best pro hockey league in the world) could supply needed players to fill the roster.
Then the ECHL would then fill the rosters of the AHL.
Junior Leagues and colleges would fill the ECHL rosters.
Did I mention Europe.

Then expand to Europe. Set up a division there.
So much of the NHL is dependent on RSN revenue - you expand, you dilute that.
Did I mention RSNs - that depend on cable subscribers (95+% of which don't give a rat's ass about the NHL but their subscriptions subsidize it), which are slowly but surely dwindling.

The problem with expanding the NHL beyond 32 teams is that you'd be doing it in a league that has a handful of teams that were struggling long before covid.
Vegas and Seattle's expansion was to get the league to 32 teams, but at this point they gotta fix the situation with the weak teams.
At all costs, the NHL has tried real hard to avoid relocations with only 1 in the past 22 years (Atlanta to Winnipeg). But with the TV money still being miniscule and not increasing substantially, and with covid doing some damage - I have to believe we're going to be seeing a couple more relocations in the next 5-10 years.

Buffalo is also a factor as they pull in a nice chunk of their crowds from Southern Ontario (for the Bills as well). So they'll cry like the bitches they are.
Hamilton's not gonna happen without a new arena and an owner with deep pockets anyway. And to tell you the truth, I think the days of Hamilton pining for an NHL team is gone.
Either from the numerous attempts to land a team (expansion or relocation) and constant rejection, or from the declining interest in hockey in general - I don't think the desire is there anymore. I know I no longer care, nor does anyone I know.

Very interesting. The Golden Knights just released their 2021 schedule. Every match is the first of two identical match ups. That should really cut down on travel and makes sense.
Worked out well for the Knights and their previously questionable decision to overspend on two starting goalies.

Re: Official 2020 NHL Off-Season Thread
I mentioned before that my NP in my office is close friends with former Golden Knights and current Colorado Avalanche center Pierre Bellmare. Two years ago she got me a team autographed jersey from him which I framed and hung in my Man Cave.
This year she gave me a Playoff game used autographed Pierre Bellmare hockey stick for Christmas. I didn't realize how light they are. Also didn't know that each player has his stick's angle and flexibility tension adjusted to their individual preferences. It's a pretty cool gift. I just have to figure how to mount it.
