It doesn't sound good for the 2020 season if teams are already having a large number of players testing positive for the virus.

Hey, that's still like half the team without COVID. Play ball!

Report: Ivy League pondering conference-only spring football season.

https://www.espn.com/college-footbal...ootball-season

This could be the start of other conferences and schools that may look into playing in the spring of 2021.

Big Ten moving to conference-only model for all sports this fall.

The Big Ten on Thursday announced it will be going to a conference-only season for all fall sports, including football, amid "unprecedented times" during the coronavirus pandemic.

https://www.espn.com/college-footbal...ll-sports-fall

This is huge! I bet most conferences will do something similar.

Re: college football offseason 2019-2020

Yes, I think all the other conferences will follow this as well. What a scheduling nightmare and also a blow to small schools not getting a big pay day. However, this is probably just the start of the bad news. With things going the way they are I donít think weíll even see one game played this season. Which Iíd rather them cancel right from the start than play a couple weird weeks with crazy rules and no fans, and end up canceling the rest of the season. I canít even imagine the financial catastrophe it will be for universities across the country.

What's going to happen with Notre Dame's schedule?

Re: college football offseason 2019-2020

It looks like the ACC is going to help them out by letting them keep the six ACC schools that are already scheduled for this season. That would mean Notre Dame would have contests against Clemson, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Wake Forest, Duke and Georgia Tech.

When everyone else cancels their games, the ACC will likely bow to them and allow them to play a full conference schedule instead of just the 6 that are already scheduled.

EDIT: And that's pretty much what Sonny posted while I was looking into exactly how many ACC games were already scheduled, lol.

Re: college football offseason 2019-2020

Big 12 said they were pretty much falling in line with ACC plans. I expect they will announce soon. Reminds me of March. College basketball cancelling league tournaments then a short time later national tournament cancelled. There will probably be weekly changes from here until season kickoff.

Pac-12 has followed suit. Notre Dame has lost 2 more opponents. (Wisconsin was the first)

They're not playing this season. Notre Dame or anybody. Gene Smith is basically already saying this. Sure, the SEC might try to hold out until the end, but it's over.

Re: college football offseason 2019-2020

Yep this is the first step towards them just cancelling. What difference does it make if you just play teams in your conference, I mean Auburn to Mizzou is a hell of a drive. These teams aren't across the street from one another. Plus I would be shocked if students don't do some sort of distance learning. So making the football players come back just to play football is bad optics.

With that said Bama has already claimed the National Championship.

Right. When several teams left the big12 a while back and joined other conferences it threw out a lot of the geographical benefits of being in a certain conference. Nebraska used to just drive to most away games now they fly to most and some are lengthy flights at that.

Re: college football offseason 2019-2020

I would assume Iowa State, but it's still far away.

Edit : Looks like Kansas. Lawrence KS is 817 miles straight line to Morgantown, while Ames IA is 875.

Re: college football offseason 2019-2020

Look at the ACC, it used to be teams boarding each other and four in the state of North Carolina. Maryland, Virginia, UNC, NC State, Wake Forest, Duke, Clemson and Georgia Tech. Now, They are all the way from New York and Massachusetts to two schools in Florida. Throw in the Irish and teams will travel all the way to Indiana. Schools could just play a regular season of games if they were going to do all that. JMO, but I don't see it happening.

Re: college football offseason 2019-2020

The given answer, whether you buy it or not, is conference control of pandemic response and protocols. It is closer for tOSU to play Bowling Green, but Nebraska has implemented the same procedures as tOSU, while Bowling Green may not have.

NCAA President suggests college football season could be canceled.

https://sportsnaut.com/2020/07/ncaa-...d-be-canceled/

This doesn't look good for the upcoming season.

I give it two weeks. An announcement will be made around the 1st of August cancelling the season. The only reason itís not been done yet is the financial reason. It will be amazing to see how universities deal with the enormous amount of lost revenue. I hope Iím wrong but I highly doubt it.

Things were so much easier before 2020 when communicable diseases did not exist.

What the Hell are you talking about? If you don't see a difference between the COVID-19 pandemic and a normal year, I can't help you.

Oh I agree. You can't walk down the street without stepping on the corpses of college age athletes.

Notre Dame's original plans were foiled when the Ivy League cancelled their season.
