Today is Ned Yost's last game for the Royals. I have no idea who will replace him.

Madden will be fine. I'm sure that suitors are already lined out the door to contend for his service.

Maddon will have his pick of jobs. My guess is he either takes Angels job or Padres job.

Which would you take? He has managed in both Leagues. Better collection of young talent or best player in the game, in his prime?

Personally, I think Padres are in a better position to compete sooner than the Angels are. They just need some starting pitching. If they get a few decent starters, they could probably compete for the wild card soon. A team like the Padres also seem to suit Maddon's style more than the Angels do.

Edit: I forgot that Ausmus is manager for Angels now. I doubt they move on from him.

Well then, maybe the Angels job is available.

Maddon was bench coach for the Angels for a while under Scoschia, I think. I wonder if he has any other preference (AL vs NL style ball). The Angels also have some OF prospect (Jo Addell) that should be MLB ready in 2020. But the Padres have more overall talent.

Clint Hurdle got fired by the Pirates today. Sadly, the GM will stay on. Hurdle probably deserved to get fired because of the awful post ASG and the chaos in the clubhouse. But the GM should have been canned as well.

I think it is more of a mutual parting of the ways.

Re: MLB 2019/20 offseason

Joe Madden came into the 2019 season in "lame duck" status because the Cubs FO never offered an extension, and he was on the last year of his contract. So, he simply fulfilled his last year of obligation and is now a free agent manager to go wherever he pleases as Chicago is not going to retain him.

I wish the Angels brass had contacted any one of the 10 million Tigers fans around the world who could have told them that Ausmus is a poor manager.

I don't know what Maddon prefers but I agree, San Diego seems like the right place for him. He excels at managing young players. It would be like Tampa all over again.

I wonder if the Cubs interest in David Ross is real. It would go along the lines of the current trend of young managers who are willing to work with the front office brass and take a heavy analytic approach.

Maddon to the Padres is a pipe dream for San Diego fans. They don't have the money to compete for his services.

I'm sorry, but that is an insane statement. They just paid Manny Machado $300M. If they want Maddon, they can certainly afford him.

Re: MLB 2019/20 offseason

I'm not really a baseball fan anymore, but I did follow the Angels from the 90s to mid 2000s. It would not surprise me if they hire Maddon. He spent 30+ years as a coach in their organization. Would be a nice return for him to cap off his career.

Re: MLB 2019/20 offseason

Maddon is almost certainly going to the Angels. I don't think he was heartbroken over getting fired from the Cubs. Word on the street is that Maddon and his wife loved living in SoCal with the Angels. The Angels will almost certainly be one of the top bidders for Gerritt Cole, who grew up literally five minutes from their stadium.

Do you really think they can outbid the Angels?

And as the Pads have too much money tied up in Machado's contract everything else gets dropped down in their budget.

Wait and see. The Pads do not have enough money coming in to pay for Machado and Maddon (and the rest of their bargain priced roster).

I guess Maddon still has had a house in Orange County. That would certainly give the Angels a head start.

Yes, they do and yes they can outbid the Angels. They may not choose to spend the money for Maddon's services but they certainly have the money to sign him.

Funny thing, that. The Angels have more money by far than the Padres do. Basic math says they can therefore outbid the Pads.
