Sports Hub(Boston Sports Radio) will be interesting today.

Let's see if this story gets attention compared to the Patriots blow out win.

It will be 26 the rest of the year but 28 in September which is still quite a bit less than what it is now.It has always been a little weird to increase rosters so much down the stretch and then back to normal rosters for the playoffs. Probably don't need all those pitchers anymore either with the three batter minimum going forward.

Maybe that was intentional.

The Red Sox have a bloated payroll and big decisions coming up with Mookie and JD Martinez, so I guess they figured he wasn’t the guy. Still seems funny less than a year after setting a team record for victories and winning the WS, though.

Dombrowski is excellent at over-valuing his own guys (ie ridiculous extensions before they're necessary) and trading away prospects for guys on contract years. While I said I'd take him back on the Tigers, it'd have to come with the caveat that Illitch Jr is willing to spend, spend, spend.

Re: 2019 MLB September thread

It's strange to fire a guy so soon after winning a World Series but it's the right move for the Red Sox in the long run. Dombrowski only knows how to spend and trade prospects. Being that the Red Sox are probably reaching a spending limit and have no prospects, Dombrowski isn't very useful anymore.

Dombrowski is excellent at identifying the very best superstar talent in the game - I really don't think anyone else is close in that regard. But he gets attached to his star talent, often throwing huge overpays their way.

This move seems to indicate that Red Sox ownership thinks the Sale extension is a disaster and giving Evoladi a 4-year deal was insane. Those moves will likely cost them Betts.

In his years in Boston he hasn't acquired anyone that developed into a star. Bogearts, Benintendi, Betts, Rodriguez and Devers were signed/drafted by the previous regime. He threw a ton of money or prospects to get David Price, Craig Kimbrel, Chris Sale and JD Martinez. It worked because the old regime created the base and he was able to overpay to get the guys that needed to fill out the roster. But the guys he acquired were superstars long before Dombrowski was able to get them.

I bet Beantown goes hard after Beane again. If they offer him a blank check then he will definitely be tempted to get a ring. That budget in Oakland can only get him so far.

I think Beane still owns 5% of the A's, I doubt he leaves for Boston or anyone else.

Bruce Bochy started managing in 1995, and will be retiring at the end of this season, 2019. If he were to retire TONIGHT, he'd be retiring with a record of, and you will not believe this,

I jumped the gun before, Dodgers' magic number is now 1. They can clinch their 7th consecutive NL West title with a win tonight over the Orioles.

That IS insane. How’d he win all those championships and still end up with a losing record?

Tons of mediocre Padres teams.

That's horrible news - the Brewers were playing much better of late and looked like a real shot to pass the Cubs for the Wild Card. Does Yelich win MVP?

Why would he over Bellinger? He has more SB and a better OBP (.429 vs .410) but Bellinger is much better defensively, on the best team in the League, leads him in WAR 8.3 to 7.1 and is likely to add to his HR total, which is currently tied with Yellich

Re: 2019 MLB September thread

Yelich has better average, OBP, Slugging and has 7.7 WAR to Bellinger's 7.2 (Fangraphs vs Baseball Reference). I'll give that Bellinger is better defensively, don't know how Yelich ever won a gold glove as he seems below average. Also think Bellinger wins the MVP

That's terrible news for baseball fans. A great player that is fun to watch. Brewers are now DOA. I just hope that it does not impede his play for the rest of his career. For what it's worth, I'd pick him as MVP because without him, the Brewers are not much of a team. Take away Bellinger and the Dodgers still roll.

Re: 2019 MLB September thread

Sucks about Yelich. While I generally favor the objective best player for MVP, it’s true about the teams around them. Remember when the Dodgers lost a legit MVP candidate in Seager and just kept winning? And what happened to Lorenzo Cain? Injuries and old age?

Amazon just sent me an auto-rec for a new book titled “Homegrown: How the Red Sox built a champion from the ground up.” The history remains true, of course, but timing the book for the 2019 playoff push shows the downsides of traditional media publishing.

Yelich had a decent chance at MVP if he stayed healthy, but unless Bellinger sucks the next 3 weeks, it's his.

Re: 2019 MLB September thread

The Dodgers would win the division with or without Bellinger. After that insane hot stretch to start the season, Bellinger has been very mortal. His WAR advantage is all tied up in his defense, which I admit is very good.

In almost all of the really advanced offensive stats, Yelich and Trout have been leagues better than everyone else in MLB. Yelich has also been super-clutch, blowing the rest of MLB out in WPA (Win Probability Added) by a wide margin.

I'd vote Yelich as MVP everyday of the week.

That's a real bummer about Yelich. He is an absolute joy to watch at the plate.

Congrads to the Orioles and Tigers.

According to STATs,the Orioles and Tigers have the highest combined total losses in AL history too start a series.
