Re: 2019 MLB July thread RIP Tyler Skaggs

Cards have won all 4 series since the break. They beat Pittsburgh today to finish a 7-1 road trip, climbing into a first play tie with Chicago. Goldschmidt has homered in 4 straight. Lots to be excited about.

Now a stretch against the Astros, Cubs, Athletics & Dodgers. A brutal stretch, but at least they're playing well going into it.

Troy Tulowitzki released a statement through the Yankees announcing his retirement.

Unbelievable talent, but could never stay healthy. He only had 2 seasons where he played 150+ games.

Bummer. He was a budding superstar before the injuries piled up.

Is Jacoby Ellsbury still collecting paychecks from the Yankees?

I haven't follwed MLB in a while, but holy shit.. 13 seasons? He was a staple on my fantasy team early in his career with the Rockies.

He'll go down as a big "What If" in baseball. If he were able to stay healthy maybe the Rockies don't trade him or maybe he becomes a middle of the line mainstay in Toronto. At the end of the day though, he had a very solid career. Good for him and hope he enjoys retirement.

Finally a deal!

Cubs get DFA’d LHP Derek Holland from the Giants for cash.

Tulo is this decade's Nomar. Started out as a Hall of Fame Shortstop before injury crippled his career.

Mets acquire RHP Marcus Stroman from the Blue Jays. They send the Blue Jays their top pitching prospect, Anthony Kay, and another pitcher Simeon Woods Richardson. Can someone explain what the hell the Mets are doing here? Shouldn't they be rebuilding instead of giving up prospects here?

Came here to ask the same thing. The rumor mill is that they are trading Thor and Diaz, but why the fuck are they getting Stroman and trading him for top prospects?

So, I cannot speak for what the Mets are doing, but it seems clear that they are not willing to go for a full rebuild; Stroman is controlled through next year. Perhaps they trade Wheeler and Vargas (both FAs at the end of the year), and keep Thor. That gives them a top 4 next year of DeGrom, Thor, Stroman, and Matz. Which is a pretty good SP rotation.

Pure speculation, but that might be what they are thinking. It also could be that they don't value the prospects as highly as the previous administration did?

Re: 2019 MLB July thread RIP Tyler Skaggs

Any chance they try to flip Stroman this week for better prospects? They may have given up their top two pitching prospects, but the older guy didn’t sound all that great. The younger guy was a recent draftee with good stuff but questionable control so he could develop into a good one.

Or maybe BVW doesn’t want to look past the next year or two figuring he’ll be gone if he doesn’t get results by then.

Re: 2019 MLB July thread RIP Tyler Skaggs

Stroman is from NY and I think selling tickets is why the deal was made. The Mets have the nutty idea they will contend over the next two years - which is crazy. The Braves are a growing juggernaut and the Nationals probably have the best starting rotation in baseball (ignore the putrid bullpen). The Phillies are willing to spend anything until they have a contender. I think it was a move made for 2020 more than this year.

Re: 2019 MLB July thread RIP Tyler Skaggs

I don't think Stroman is going to bring more fans to the park just because he's from NYC, but I do think this move was about 2020.

In other Mets pitching news, they traded Vargas to the Phils. I'll take Stroman over Vargas any day of the week.

Apparently the Mets' trade for Stroman has upset many GMs across baseball - they think the Jays sold low on Stroman and also takes one very tradable pitcher off the market. Trading Vargas was a salary dump by all reports, though strangely to a division rival.

I keep waiting for the Dodgers to make the big move that they think will get them over the hump.

Bauer traded to Reds. This is now his 3rd team. Looks like for all the shit the Dbacks got for giving up on him, wasn't justified. He is a cancer where ever he goes.

Interesting that both of the top starters have gone to teams that appear to be looking at 2020 more than 2019.

Re: 2019 MLB July thread RIP Tyler Skaggs

I have a gut feeling the trade deadline is going to be very slow / disappointing. While I hope the Tigers dump most of their team, I don't think they'll get a haul worth trading for.

I think that’s a real possibility, with money concerns holding up deals like they did for free agency. That said, I don’t recall offhand what happened last year, but getting rid of the August deadline doesn’t seem to have helped so far.

Interesting that the Mets let Thor start. He helped his value, but the risk of injury plus pushing his next start back a couple days for any new team makes one wonder if they’re holding him.

If they're upset, they should have made a better offer for Stroman. I give the Mets credit for that deal.

As for Vargas, as a Mets fan I do not care that he went to a division rival. While he has pitched well the last month or 2, over his 2 year Met career (this time around, he played for them in 2007) he has pitched under 200 innings with an ERA around 5. I look forward to guys like Conforto, McNeil, and Alonso crushing him in future games.
