I was at the Angels game tonight. A combined no hitter on the night everyone wore number 45 for Tyler Skaggs. So memorable.

Can only imagine how high the emotions were running during that game.

It was amazing. Probably the best one I’ve ever been to.

Awesome Nick. How cool it must have been to be at that game, despite the sad circumstances

Cashner to the Red Sox for two 17-year-olds.

It was very cool. Emotional start and Trout started the offense with a two run shot (two of his six RBI on the night) and they kept chugging on. By the time the 6th inning came around, people starting buzzing about a possible no-no. It would have been a perfect game except Pena walked one Mariner in the 5th. But to any Angels fan, it was a perfect game anyway.

Funny when the Red Sox signed SP Chris Sales to an extension and he hasn't won a game at home in over a year(this according to NBC Sports Boston).

I wonder if Sale knew he was broken when he signed that fairly below-market extension. Because it sure seems like the dominant top-3 pitcher he was in the game for many years disappeared right around last August and hasn't come back. He's still a very good pitcher, but maybe his days of contending for Cy Youngs are over.

Mariners single-handedly making a case to abolish the “starter” strategy: 0-3, 13 G, 12.1 IP, 22 H, 12 BB, 12K, 5 HR, 14.59.

Tigers just a game and a half out of worst in baseball... what a dumpster fire we've become and there is very little in the farm system. Sure, we have a few pitchers who could pan out but literally none of the trades we've made (especially the Verlander deal) have resulted in a top prospect type return. To make matters worse, the front office signed our GM to a 4-year deal a few weeks back.

Are you going to trade Boyd? Seems like he doesn’t fit whatever your timeframe is, and his value would seem to be at its peak.

Perfect game alert. Mike Leake (no, I really mean Mike Leake) is throwing a gem against the punchless Angels. Last week he gave up 7 runs in two thirds of an inning and Seattle lost 13-0. The M’s have an 8-0 lead in the 6th on the back of two three run homers by Vogelbach.

Re: 2019 MLB July thread RIP Tyler Skaggs

Leake through 7 and still perfect. His pitch count is ridiculous, too. Only 67 pitches. He just got through Trout and Ohtani, so he will face the 4-5-6-7-8 and 9 batters next. Shouldn’t be too hard. Honestly, I’m kind of rooting for him at this point. The game is lost for my team and Seattle hasn’t had a lot to cheer about this year.

Maybe this will give Leake some trade value!

And DiPoto is probably working the phones right now, trying to trade him before he loses the no-no!

I’ll be at the game tomorrow night. I just hope they don’t shit the bed like they did tonight

Trout went 0-4 and is 1-8 in his two games back. Seems like every time he misses some time, he goes into a slump. He was knocking the cover off the ball before he hurt his calf.

I'm fairly sure that Trout plays through minor injuries. If the Angels were 20 games below .500, he'd still be resting.

I'm reading that we're asking for a HUGE return for Boyd... he has a very friendly contract for the next 3 years and his K-rate is thru the roof this season. I kinda look at him as a very good #3 pitcher / good #2 in a top-notch rotation who could really help our up and coming young pitchers. I don't care if we don't trade him but if we do, we need to get a nice package back.
We'll for sure trade Castellanos and Greene and get little to nothing in return.

Dodgers open up a 16 game lead in their division - they improved to 67-35 and nobody else in the NL West is above. 500. They need some bullpen help for the Postseason but not much more than that.

Somebody walk me through this : I was checking Baseball Prospectus Playoff Odds today. The Diamondbacks and the Giants have identical 50-50 records and are tied for second in the same Division. Though neither team has a shot at their division crown, the D-Backs were given a 45.8% chance of getting a Wild Card berth while the Giants were given only an 8.8% chance. Now I get that the D-backs hold a 4-2 head-to-head record, but that still seems like a huge disparity for two teams with identical records, don't you think?

I'm fairly certain that they factor in the team's run differential to determine how they are likely to perform going forward. Arizona is currently +63 and would have an expected record of 56-44. San Fran is -42 which should give them an expected record of 46-54. So while they are tied in the standings, one would expect the Diamondbacks to outperform the Giants over the remainder of the season.

Re: 2019 MLB July thread RIP Tyler Skaggs

There’s talk of the Giants riding this hot streak to buy instead of sell at the deadline. I understand the appeal of making another run with some of the guys with ties to the championships, but it would seem wiser long-term to dump your assets while you still can. Will Smith alone should return some good talent.

Many gamblers project baseball using third-order run differentials, which examine the underlying components of performance separately and then reconstruct how much the team "should" have scored and given up. Basically the Giants have had a lot of things go right for them to be .500, and when you remove those lucky elements, they are unlikely to win enough games over the remaining season to make the playoffs.
