Re: 2019 MLB July thread RIP Tyler Skaggs

Four teams are only playing 2 games this weekend then they have the all-star break.

That's one reason why they play games in the snow in March and in the colder weather in November but have many days off in the middle of the Summer(then they wonder why attendance is down).

List of players under age 24 who have hit 30 HR in a season before the All-Star Break :

Willie Mays
Reggie Jackson
Mark McGwire
Cody Bellinger

That's it.

The Cubs are one of those teams, they just got done 50 games in 52 days. (One was a make up) I'm fine with them getting a Friday off. The fact that baseball no longer schedules double headers is a bigger contributing factor then the occasional day off.

The players union has fought over and over again for more rest during the season. It was one of the few concessions they really got in the last labor contract. They are the ones pushing for going back to a 154-game schedule.

When just MLB was deciding the schedule, there were far fewer off days and the teams basically played straight from April to September with very few off days. You can blame the players for the expansion into March and the more frequent off days.

If that's the price (getting a travel day on a Friday) for having more teams playing on the Fourth of July when it falls on a Thursday, that is a trade-off that I'm more than fine with.

According to STATS,it was the first time in Orioles history that they didn't have a game scheduled for the 4th of July.

Irrelevant . There are 30 teams so if every US based teams should play on the 4th, then the Jays would HAVE TO!

Yelich is out of the homerun derby. Interesting nugget from Lance Berkman, who occasionally provides color commentary on Astros games. He played in two different derbies, including the famous Josh Hamilton one in NY.

This week he mentioned that players believe they use juiced balls in the homerun derby, confirming my long-held suspicion about the contests.

I was pulling for Joc but Vladdy Jr. is a great kid so I’m happy for him.

I was impressed with Acuna spraying homers all over the field in the derby. Most guys just pull it as much as they can.

I only watched part of the ASG last night, but the mic'ed players was a good addition. I also liked the part where they had both coaches mic'ed at the same time and they were try to guess what the next pitch was going to be.

I haven’t watched the game in years and afterward always feel like I missed out, but know I really didn’t. The last time I watched the HR derby with the new rules (last year?), it was pretty fun.

Re: 2019 MLB July thread RIP Tyler Skaggs

The game is still worth watching the first few innings, when the truly great all-stars are still playing. By the 6th or 7th inning, it's a bunch of disposable one-shot all-star relievers pitching.

I think it's lunacy by the way for Fox to mike infielders while they are playing defense and trying to talk with them. They did it with Lindor and I was just waiting for something very bad to go wrong. Outfielders can get away with it.

I'm actually surprised they didn't mike one of the pitchers on the mound.

Listening to Classic Baseball on the Radio(YouTube) the Yankees/Tigers 9-17-68 pennant clinching game for the Tigers(Yankee broadcast).

Rizzuto was mentioning that the Tiger fans were mad because the cheapo Tigers wouldn't televise the game. Back in the day I think the Tigers only had 40 games on TV(mostly weekends).

Ex MLB pitcher and author of Ball Four Jim Bouton has passed away at the age of 80.

Ball Four possibly the best book ever about the 1969 Seattle Pilots but most MLB players who played with Bouton didn't care for the book but afterwards some liked it.

Re: 2019 MLB July thread RIP Tyler Skaggs

Ball Four is a great read for baseball fans nostalgic for an earlier era of the game. I think it wasn't liked by Bouton's fellow players upon release because he broke the "code" and exposed some of the sordid details common to playing MLB at the time.

It reads fairly tame and innocent today, but back in the 1970s I think it must have been shocking to many baseball fans.

I would guess that this was the pilot and the series never came to fruition.

Re: 2019 MLB July thread RIP Tyler Skaggs

It was weird about 1970 spring training. For the most of it I think they were the Seattle Pilots, then they did a major rush job too send them to Milwaukee right before the regular season. I can't remember if they played any exhibition games as the Brewers that season. I do have The Sporting News from 1970(which carried all the spring training box scores).
