Re: FIFA Women's World Cup 2019 (France).

Yes it was a blowout.. yes the USA didn't even need a goalie.. Thailand only got 2 shots on goal the entire game.

But this wasn't a 7 year old AYSO girls soccer club.. it's the world cup. You're there to win.. not make friends and not feel sorry for other teams. If the USA team had stepped back and just kicked the ball around there would be far more outrage at the disrespect they showed by not even trying anymore. So what were they supposed to do? After the 13th goal just be sad? Give me a break. These complainers aren't worth being taken seriously.

Re: FIFA Women's World Cup 2019 (France).

I don't think wanting a modicum of sportsmanship is too much to ask for, even in a pinnacle event Nor does it mean you're asking for them not to be there to win or that they are there to make friends. I'd say the context of the game situation matters just as much as the context of the event.. Score all you want and can. Smile, high-five, fist bump, hug your teammates after goals that continue to pour it on - no problem. Nobody said you have to be sad after such goals. Give me a break. The whirlybirds and sliding - that's overkill. JMHO.

And I never expect to be taken seriously on an internet forum.

Re: FIFA Women's World Cup 2019 (France).

I missed some good games today because my tv provider has been down all day. Seems that France 2 - Norway 1 was pretty eventful. Saw the highlights and France scored 3 goals in the 2nd half. One good goal, one own goal (rather inexplicable by Renard), and then a (very questionable) penalty awarded after VAR (72') which sealed the deal for France.

Oh dear:

Australia come back from 0-2 to beat Brazil 3-2. However, another VAR allowed an own goal that shoudn't have counted. If you're going to use VAR to get stuff wrong, might as well not use it.

She was played back onside by the Brazil defender...goal was good. Plus, anything that makes Kate Gill smile is OK by me

Nobody on the TSN panel thought the goal was good and 3 of them are former players. Heck, this is from an Australian:
Brazil robbed by late Matildas World Cup drama

Sam Kerr got away with murder thanks to a scandalous referee decision that’s resurrected the Matildas’ World Cup chances.
Don't seem very supportive of their own team.

Just shows how few people - including players and 'experts' - fully understand the rule.

Which is why, in such cases, you should always trust the random dude on the internet over all the players and experts.

Edited: After further review, it doesn't seem that clear cut. Some seem to confuse the old offside rule with the new one. However, it's ridiculous to argue that Kerr didn't impact the play. Her mere presence close to the ball impacted the play.

I'll go with the professional FIFA experts who were on site to officiate and VAR the game, and who all just so happened to come to the same conclusion as...me.

And if you can't trust FIFA or random internet dudes then who can you trust?

In this case, you can't trust anyone because much like the NFL's original attempt at "fixing" the catch rule, this change to the offside rule actually made it worse. Why? Because there's too much room for interpretation, and therefore, confusion ensues. And if it ain't clear to former/current players and "experts"/analysts, then the rule is poop.

Re: FIFA Women's World Cup 2019 (France).

Yeah, that was better. Needed another goal to be 1st though so they'll have to beat the Dutch to finish top of group. Mind you sometimes 2nd is better, depends on who you might play.

Uh oh, missed penalty kick. This US team seems to have some flaws.

Re: FIFA Women's World Cup 2019 (France).

After scoring in her own goal the previous game, France's captain Renard misses a penalty, but she gets a do-over because the Nigerian goalie had both feet off the line. She scored. France 1 - Nigeria 0.

The funny thing is I was watching the other game, Norway vs Korea, and when the above happened, that game strangely had audio of both games, so you had two sets of commentators talking over each other. I'm like what penalty??? Then I realized what was happening and switched to the France game to see the penalty re-do.

Why to the Dutch whose national flag is Red, White & Blue always wear Orange in athletic events?

I think I read that orange is the colour that was used by the Dutch monarchy way way back when.

edit: found this...

The reason why orange is such a prominent color in the Netherlands is that it used to be part of our flag, red wasorange. Also, our royal family's last name is 'van Oranje Nassau'. The flag colorchanged over time but our royal family are still called 'the oranges'.

Much better Dutch side than the one that had been winless in 12 matches against us(Canada).

Look at Italy, surprise, finished top of their group. The big advantage these European teams have is they all have their own leagues now and the soccer infrastructure to support them. They are all getting better fast. Some Canadians already play in the NWSL, but all the teams are in the US. I don't think a Canadian league would work, but Soccer Canada should work with the NWSL to add a couple of Canadian teams.

Jordyn Huitema is the first Canadian woman to turn pro straight after high school. She just signed a 4 year deal with PSG. That's (Europe) where the competition is.

I think the best match would be if the US split their team in two and played themselves
