Re: 2019 MLB June thread

This is the week that won the NL East for the Braves. The Phillies are in shambles and the Nationals have one of the worst bullpens ever assembled. Saturday night's comeback against the Nats more or less ended their little recent streak.

The Braves are one Madison Bumgarner away from being real World Series threats.

Re: 2019 MLB June thread

A different Dodgers rookie hit a walk-off Homer in each of the last three games against the Rockies. That's the first time that has happened in MLB.

You know your team had a good game when one of their MLB highlight videos is ďRun scores on double play.Ē

goddam, being a Mets fan is so fucking hard. It's almost as bad as being a Knicks fan.

Re: 2019 MLB June thread

My part-thoughtful, part-random AS vote:

AL: Santana, LeMahieu, Bergman, Polanco, Sanchez, Gallo, Springer, Trout, Pence

NL: Freeman, Moose, Arenado, BŠez, Contreras, Bellinger, Blackmon, Yelich

Re: 2019 MLB June thread

Fun thought experiment : How many current active Baseball players do you think would be recognized in street clothes by a casual sports fan in a city without a professional baseball team?

My best guess :

Trout
Kershaw
Judge
Stanton
Altuve
Verlander
Scherzer
Harper
Bumgarner (maybe?)
Pujols

I'm sure I'm forgetting some, but I don't know how many more.

I'm sure

Re: 2019 MLB June thread

Using your guidelines, I doubt anyone on that list would be recognized.

Re: 2019 MLB June thread

I think things like commercials, promos, ESPN spots help with recognition. Maybe you are right but some of those guys have been around and interviewed enough to be recognizable. It's crazy to think but I doubt most non-diehards really know what reigning MVPs Yelich and Betts look like.

It's a long way from the HR-happy late 90s where there were probably DOZENS of players famous enough to be instantly recognizable.

Re: 2019 MLB June thread

Trout, Verlander, and Harper, maybe Kershaw. But a lot of guys are only recognizable for certain characteristics. I’m not sure a clean-shaven Harper would make the list. Maybe David Price, who has kind of a distinctive look. I think Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo are easy to identify, but I’m sure a lot of BASEBALL FANS wouldn’t recognize them. Ichiro would probably make the list had he not just retired.

Damn. All Star voters actually got it right by voting Ketel Marte in at 2B. I am surprised because he is not a household name.

18-inning loss for the Twins after scoring their only runs in the first.

The ballot really helped because it laid out all the finalists and their stats. The key really was making the top three.

i remember him from his Seattle days but canít say I ever expected him to produce a .949 OPS.

He got an absurdly team friendly extension last year. If he continues at this pace, it will be a steal.

Judge and Stanton mostly, only because their imposing physiques grossly stand out in a crowd. Also Verlander because I think most people now know he's Mr. Kate Upton.

Harper supposedly has the highest Q rating of any active baseball player. Trout blends very well into crowds considering he's the best player on the planet. I probably see half a dozen guys a week that could be Mike Trout.

this Yankees/Red Sox game in London. 12 runs scored in 1st inning, nearly an hour long and Red Sox still batting.

I actually didnít realize he was a 3.3 WAR player last year, including 12 triples and 14 homers. Good to see him succeed.

In the UK(or anywhere else) you could watch 2 soccer games and go grocery shopping and still have time leftover comparing it too a Yankee/Red Sox game.

Why didn't they ask Manfred about the slow pace of play at the game today?

Re: 2019 MLB June thread

When the teams score a combined 30 runs on 37 hits and 12 walks, it's going to be a long game.

Edit: If I recall correctly Professional Cricket matches are very long with about 6 hours of play occurring everyday. A baseball game under 5 hours might seem like a short event in comparison.

Re: 2019 MLB June thread

I've heard the cheapest tickets available for the London games were going for $400 and up.

Re: 2019 MLB June thread

I knew they were a dominant and talented football team, but who knew they had players good enough to make the MLB All-Star team?
