This whole Ichiro playing two games and likely retiring has been oddly handled. They gave him two at-bats and pulled him from game one. I get the feeling the Mariners wouldn't have brought Ichiro back at all if not for this series in Japan.

I'm guessing if he actually gets a hit (he's been terrible in spring training action), Ichiro walks off the field right there and retires.

Reports coming out that St. Louis might have an extension worked out with Goldschmidt at least 5 years/$110 million. That would be fantastic.

I'm surprised the Dbacks weren't willing to extend him if that is all he wanted. I was expecting him to get $150-200 million with a good season. The players must be spooked after what has happened in free agency over the past two years.

ESPN says 5 years $130M. Given his age, that seems about right,

Goldschmidt is worth 26 per for 5 years. I'll take that chance.

That isn't what he wanted. The negotiations started at $200 million. They shipped him out when he wouldn't budge on that starting point. At the current signing price point they could have extended him. The trade was all on him.

Re: 2019 MLB March-April Thread

WASHINGTON -- Pitching matchups as prestigious as this one to open a season are rare. Only twice before in Major League history have the top two Cy Young Award vote-getters squared off against one another on the ensuing Opening Day. This year, it happens twice more.

Jacob deGrom, the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner fresh off his newly agreed upon contract extension, will square off with runner-up Max Scherzer, who won the award in 2016...the American League features a similarly historic matchup as Blake Snell of the Rays faces Cy Young Award runner-up Justin Verlander of the Astros.

Re: 2019 MLB March-April Thread

Supposedly Sale is on some sort of plan to keep more in the tank for September and October. Everyone knows he normally fades after July.

I know no one was watching, but Verlander has added a legitimate change-up this time. He looked even more unhittable with it against Tampa. I still think it's a crime that Snell won the Cy Young over Verlander last year.

Watching the Angels these first two games reminds me of Ian Malcom in Jurassic Park. Do you plan on scoring runs in your baseball games? Hello?

Re: 2019 MLB March-April Thread

Dodgers game on Friday night lasted 6 hours 5 minutes and it was only 13 innings.

Dave Roberts,Dodgers and Joe Maddon ,Cubs get my vote for over-managers of the year on a yearly basis and Roberts is already at the top of his over-managing game.

Thanks to MLB these games will continue .

Re: 2019 MLB March-April Thread

6 hours or 6 minutes, as long as the Dbacks beat the Dodgers, I don't care how long it takes.

Nice to see Goldschmidt be like FU Dbacks by hitting 3 HRs last night.
