Official 2019 College Basketball Off-Season and Coaching Carousel Thread

And we're off.

UNLV thankfully fires Marvin Menzies after three miserable, irrelevant seasons.

Texas A& M fires Billy Kennedy after 8 seasons

Time to show my profound, or lack of, knowledge of the college game. VT coach to A&M and Kansas coach to the Chicago Bulls. I heard these are next to done deals. Any truth?

I've heard rumblings about Buzz to A&M (not sure why - lateral).

Nothing about Bill Self.

Re: Official 2019 College Basketball Off-Season and Coaching Carousel Thread

I've heard nothing about Self having any interest in moving. He's extremely highly paid, has job security for life and has no connection to the pro game. Doubt there is any truth to that. Its over Twitter this morning I see. After seeing what the Bulls did to fellow Big 12 coach Fred Hoiberg's career I have no idea why he'd even want it. Will ask around at the KU watch party this afternoon.

Heard both rumors a few days ago from one well connected to an ACC program. He seemed confident in both, albeit more sure about the A&M move. But since I don't even know who these guys are, I've no idea the chances of either.

The Bill Self thing seems to be the report of one local sports handicapper on local Chicago radio. Not saying it's not possible -- KU is about to get hit hard by the NCAA it looks like , it's killing recruiting this year, and I could see Self leaving if the penalties are severe or if he is implicated like Larry Brown did in 1988. That said, I just don't think he's even looking at back channels for a new job before their season is over.

Will the changes from reform of college basketball happen this coming year after the FBI probe?

The NBA and NCAA need to get together and get rid of the one and done rule. Zion Williamson wasted a year at Duke when he should have been able to jump from high school to the NBA.Williamson

St Joe's fires Phil Martelli after 24 seasons. I remember that one year they were undefeated until the Tournament or something like that...

Yep, 2004 - they had the 2 great guards. They were undefeated going into the A-10 tourney and lost in the A-10 quarters. They got a 1-seed and Billy Packer was livid. Lost in an epic Elite 8 game vs. 2-seed Ok State.

A Philly institution but when your best A10 finish is T3 over the last 14 years, you're eventually going to get canned. Also, Fran Dunphy's last game at Temple last night, so 2 of the long-time Big Five coaches are gone.

Bama buying out Avery Johnson. Stunning turn of developments to anybody who has never before seen Avery Johnson coach (or talk about) the game of Basketball.

It is unbelievable that Wake is keeping both AD Wellman and coach Manning. They must love continuing to be ACC bottom dwellers.

Kentucky lands Bucknell grad transfer Nate Sestina.

Good for Nate. Wish him well. He should play a lot there next season and be a very nice asset for them.

It is a good hire for Arkansas but a very tough conference.

Unfortunately, VT is just not an attractive job. Its a brutal conference and they are always second to UVA in the state (and in some years, VCU). The best players in Virginia tend to go to other ACC schools so this was probably the best they could do.

Anyone read about the hilarious ineptitude of the UCLA coaching search over the weekend? What a cluster. If I were Rick Barnes I'd stay at Rocky Top. It's a better job IMHO.

I don't know. The Pac 12 is wide open . Seriously who is the best coach in the conference Sean Miller? Dana Altman? Bobby Hurley? Plus so much in-state talent in CA. They should be competitive every season in Conference at least. Seems like an easier road to Ws than the SEC.

I don't disagree with you but the reason that it is wide-open is because the in-state talent doesn't tend to stay there. Many of the best California recruits are going to Gonzaga or Arizona (or East) although USC did have a very nice 2019 class this year. It's just not a competitive conference. The only Pac 12 team to make it even to the round of 32 was Oregon. And they had a nice run at the end of the season but otherwise they were a middling team. For the most part however, I think UT is a better job right now than UCLA. UCLA is also not even the biggest attraction in L.A. sportswise either. For me, unless I was a mid-major coach looking for a huge raise and to make a name for myself at a former blue chip (think Calipari) I would not take this job.

Speaking of Goznaga, how the hell do they keep Mark Few year after year? Few makes $1.78M/yr. Compare that to Cal ($9.2M), Coach K ($7M) or the cluster of coaches who make right around $4M (Izzo, Self, Bennett, Roy Williams, Jay Wright, Bob Huggins and Chris Mack?). Somebody needs to double Few's salary at once. He totally deserves it. And if that isn't tiny Gonzaga, well that is the way things go.

You aren't wrong, but the school only pulls in $12M from basketball per year in the crappy conference they play in. I think Few stays because it's a great job that affords him a large degree of success in a relatively low-key, lowered expectations environment.

Few has demonstrated that he can field a top 10 team at Gonzaga year after year and a truly legitimate title contender every few years. The only thing a major conference school has to offer him is a bigger paycheck, but that would also come with significant downsides for him. Gonzaga is a known quantity, there aren't an army of deep-pocketed boosters mucking things up, and he pretty much has 100% job security there at this point. I agree he's worth more money, but the economics of coaching at Gonzaga are what they are and I'd probably make the same decision he has, based on the cost/benefit of going to a major conference school.
