I think he would have retired right there if he had won Wimbledon. Yes, I know he's told everyone he wants to play through to the Olympics. Plans change. Even with the Slams rigging the draws as favorably as possible for Fed, you still eventually have to beat a few decent contenders in the second week. I think Fed fans got very excited when Novak retired, but I'm not sure that Fed would have even won the next round if he had gotten past Dimitrov.

I think it's amazing what he's done at his age.

Bianca prevails again in a occasionally sloppy but still entertaining match.

Really thought it was going to a 3rd set.

Hope she can beat Serena in the final.

re: The Tennis Thread

Oddly enough, we might end up with the exact same finals as at the Rogers Cup (Andreescu vs Williams, Medvedev vs Nadal).

Go Bianca!

Brutal first set tiebreaker there. I expect Matteo to fade away a bit now.

Medvedev is playing very well but has played a lot of tennis over the past two months. I could see him pushing Nadal to 4 or even 5 sets. In the end I believe Nadal wins. Winning the Open would all but assure Nadal of passing Federer's slam count.

I agree to this extent. I don't think Medvedev can win a 5-set match against Nadal right now. If he is going to win (which I doubt), it will have to be in 3 or 4 sets.

Good start for Andreescu. Serena has problems with those rare opponents that can dictate play against her and her unforced error count (and frustration) starts to ramp up when it happens.

I have to say that was tough to watch. I dont know how Bianca did it because I was hiding behind the couch at the end. I thought she was heading for the most epic chokes in sports history.

Congrats Bianca!!

Next time I'll try to hang in there with you

Awesome job, Bianca!

Nadal is up a set and a break on Medvedev who appears to be rapidly tiring.

The man has quite a tank of gas in that scrawny Russian frame of his. Fifth set here we come.

Vamos, Rafa! 19 Slams, 4 US Opens. Incredible career. That was an ugodly rollercoaster of a match, Medvedev is SO good.

Serena is still at 23

This is nuts. Odds are Nadal at least ties Fed, he has to have at least 1 more French Open in him, barring anything else anywhere else. And Fed keeps flirting with winning another. And who knows how many Djokovic ends up with.

2010-2019 in Men's Grand Slam Tennis

40/40 won by European born players

15/40 won by Djokovic
13/40 won by Nadal
5/40 won by Federer
3/40 won by Murray
3/40 won by Wawrinka

39/40 won by the "Big Five" (Maran Cilic, 2014 US Open)

re: The Tennis Thread

That Cilic Slam looks more and more weird every time I see it mentioned. No one ever viewed him as a legitimate threat to win a Slam and he ends up being the only non-Hall of Famer to win one this decade. One of the bigger flukes in Slam history. Wouldn't be surprised to find out he was doping during that period.

I think it's a fait accompli that Nadal passes Fed in Slams - it wouldn't surprise me if he ends up with 22-23. Djokovic and Nadal are so far above the rest of the field they will continue to trade Slams the next couple years.

Once Djokovic or Nadal starts nearing Serena's 23, they will be motivated to pass her count. Yes, I don't think she's winning another one.

That no one viewed him as a threat (which I doubt it true anyway) is hardly worth much merit, especially as a precursor for insinuating that he was doping. His suspension was in 2013, so I think it is fair to say that he was under extra scrutiny when he came back earlier in 2014. The fact of the matter is that Nadal was not there, Murray lost to Djokovic, and Djokovic and Wawrinka both lost to Nishikori. That means that the only top player that Marin had to beat was Federer, which he did handily (admittedly, this specific match result was weird). Cilic may have only been in the teens ranking wise at the time, but he got as high as #4 in 2017 and #3 in 2018, long after his points from winning the USO in 2014 had expired.

You seem to be discarding Medvedev here. I'm not sure I would be so quick to do that. He has already proven that he is no Alexander Zverev or Berna Coric-type underachiever. He also soundly defeated Djokovic just a few weeks ago and just took Nadal to five sets yesterday. Whether he remains a force in men's tennis next year obviously remains to be seen, but my money is on him remaining a pretty big impediment to both Nadal and Djokovic in the coming season.

re: The Tennis Thread

And yeah, if Djokovic and Rafa were "so far above the rest", they would have crushed Fed and Medvedev on these made to measure, slow ass, grass/hard courts. These last two finals were hardly dominating performances.

That said, congrats to Rafa, and kudos to Medvedev for making it a match.

What a great match last night. Good enough that I missed basically the whole first quarter of the Pats game cause I couldn't turn it off. Vamos Rafa!
