Yup. And it showed in the loss to Lopez. In the last 2 sets, his movement was sluggish, he hit many balls without moving his feet, in a word, fatigue. Final in Stuttgart, semi at Queens with some hard fought wins, 18 y/o's aren't used to playing so many matches and go through the grind of a tennis season, week after week. But in any one match though, he can beat anyone.

Lopez wins in Queens (he won in 2017). Fed win his 10th Halle title and his career 102nd. Fed joins Rafa as the only two men to win double digit titles at one event in the Open Era.

It's just not the top dawgs peaking late in their career,Lopez's 2 biggest titles (Queens 2017,2019) occured past the age of 35. Don't think he can win Wimbledon, but those top seeds should get worried if FeLo is on their side of the draw

The Lopez-Simon match was electrifying to watch. One of this year's very best matches as they slugged it out in their own styles after the first set.

I'll repeat that I wish we could trade one of the clay masters for a grass masters.

Dear Rafa and uncle Toni, stop whining about the damn Wimbledon draw. You know how their system works and it's been the same for...ever. And whether you are 1, 2 or 3 doesn't change a damn thing. You'll still have to play (upsets aside) the other 2.

That's not true, right? if you are 2 or 3 you know you have to play 2/3 and then 1, but if you're 1 you only have to play the 2/3 winner. Of course 1 has to play 4 instead. Still, agree with you.

I liked it back in the day when the Slams had fewer seeded players. Top-ranked players might actually match up with a dangerous floater in the early rounds.

I'm more or less convinced that the deeper seeding has helped the Big Three's dominance.

Yup, but my point was about Rafa being 2 or 3 (because he can't be 1, that's Djokovic). So in theory, he still has to play both Fed and Djokovic and I don't think it matters which one you play in the semi vs final.

D'Arcy MaineESPN

DOWN GOES NAOMI OSAKA! The reigning US Open and Australian Open champ, and World No. 2, was stunned by Yulia Putintseva in the first round on Centre Court, 7-6, 6-2. Putintseva receives a standing ovation from the crowd while Osaka looks devastated as she walks off the court.

Tsitsipas, Zverev, Dimitrov, Monfils, all lost. Zverev has zero confidence currently, and Tsitsipas needs to stop talking about what he should have done and what he coudn't do. I mean, bloody hell, last time he lost to Felix he said he might never beat him. You need to work on your mental strength buddy. The problem is in your head.

Yup, but grass is Thiem's worst surface. That said, there are far more upsets on grass than any other surface even if, according to Fed, "the grass is particularly slow".

And even if he's an idiot, Kyrgios usually shows up against the best players and should give Rafa all sorts of trouble if he sticks to tennis.

Things starting to look a little bleak for Coco Gauff. She fell apart during the last few games of the first set and is now already down a break in a second. I think her inexperience is starting to reveal itself.

No other massive surprises today, although both Azarenka and Opelka suffered more one-sided defeats that I would have predicted.

I havenít watched tennis in a long time, but I really like this kid. I hope she learns from this and comes back even better in the next tournament.

Yup, clearly a very strong bias in her favor from the crowd. Hard to not root for a 15 year-old on this stage, no matter who she is or where she is from. That said, she definitely needs to be stronger. She doesn't have nearly enough offense to beat the top players yet.

I don't think she has any killer element to her game. Hercog clearly had a better serve and a killer forehand, but Coco has a shit ton of endurance and mentally she got her game together while Hercog was up and down emotionally and physically. Coco's game is well rounded, she just needs to perfect the different aspects of the game. I think she can do it. She's only 15.

re: The Tennis Thread

Today is the day that the number of Americans still in singles draws gets reduced substantially. Lauren Davis already lost today and Steve Johnson and Alison Riske are walking to the door right now. Sandgren seems highly unlikely to get past Fognini later this morning either. We will probably be down to Querrey (winning at the moment), Serena, Coco Gauff and maybe Sloane Stephens after today. On the other hand, considering how many majors in recent years saw no Americans not named "Williams" in the second week of either singles draw, I guess this is still pretty good.

re: The Tennis Thread

Belinda Bencic is putting on full display all the reasons why she has only ever been in one major QF in close to five years on tour, and that in 2014. Such a talented player who just doesn't have what it takes between her ears. Looks like Alison Riske may add another American name in the second week after all.
